Why is he called STD? Man I am loving this whole French Open so far. So many fun matches, fun surprises, old persons breaking through like Franny and Melzy, just has every element I like, especially cold, wet clay torturing mindless Big Babes. Wow, what's not to like here! Agree. This slam=good. I imagine some would like it even more if Rafa had lost, too, but not me Seriously, the OTHER Steffi and Monica. They played a $10K in Wollongong that year and goddammit, THAT's what made Stosur pick up a racket. Heh, all of a sudden I flashed back to an article written and published after Hingis had won two or three Grand Slams, where the author started raving about this new young talent pushing Seles and Graf, and her name was Monica Hingis. Monica Hingis this, Monica Hingis that. Watch out for Monica Hingis, the next great superstar. OMG fine wine babies, so funny. OMG FINE WINE BABIES! So catchy.

LOL. STD is the worst nickname ever, designed by me because he had no nickname. I knew it was terrible and everyone else knew it was terrible, but because I stuck with it and used it every single time Melzer came up on this board, it has become a default setting. A true story of perseverance which will inspire the world for ages. In short, I totally made "fetch" happen. Melzer is a big manwhore. He may or may not have an STD because of this. The end. It's just as well you gave him a nickname before I tried to sneak in Melza Seltzer, which is what I call him in my head.

I actually read STD as STUD the first time, too. That was clearly my brain reading what it wanted to see. Yeah, I approve of Melzer. I doubt I'd intentionally stalk him around a tournament or anything (like with Djokovic, Nadal, Younger Robredo, Much Younger JCF, and others), but every now and then I remember he exists and stop to watch him practice for a few minutes before moving on.

This year's Shvedova run doesn't cut it. Last year was fairly insane, but 2008 was super with both Q-CSN and Kanepi. Likhovtseva beat THUNDER in the QF as well. Amaze. Sesil was apparently pregnant then as well! Q-Mandula and Kras were classic WTFs, and Schiavone was a big surprise into the QF that year as well. C. Fernandez into the 2003 SF was a giant LOL as well. But I think the best of the 2000s was when 2-Davenport lost 1R to van Roost, and then DVR lost in the next round to Q-Marrero and called her 2nd round loss to an unknown Spaniard "her best Roland Garros ever." That set up the massive Q-Marrero vs. Q-de los Rios 4R, which Marrero won. Lolz wut.

What I remember most from Likh's run was her win over Demented in, I believe, R4. It was 15 hours of CC baseline rallies. Amazing. Our commentator slipped a couple of times exclaiming "And another needless rally!", instead of the intended "hard fought rally" - those two sound really similar in Serbian. OMG, Marrero bagelled breadsticked ASV in R1 in 2002.

Regarding DVR, her mother had passed away a month or two before RG that year and she was emotionally fragile and considering retirement. She burst into tears while shaking hands with 2-Davenport after their match. She retired after the Olympics, IIRC. I always DVR.

There can't have been too many WTA players from the Canary Islands at all, and it's so weird the two most prominent had the exact same Slam debut, reaching the RG QF as a Q. Nadezhda ending Seles's career (and 1R Slam streak) in 2003, too, with a bagel to boot, and following it up by beating Fatriati and making the SF!

Some great memories from that year. Bepa 3 had her big breakthrough. Franny's last best result was in 2001 when she lost to Martina in the QF

She may as well win the Grand Slam, if she's surrounded by talentless cunts and choking whores. I need to recognize this, my most favourite quote of the match ;D

Jeepers making the 4th round should suffice for this year.
I think the most random had to be Petra Schwartz in '94. She literally did nothing besides that QF. Either her or Mandula. I remember watching her vs. Kim and being stunned that someone that slow made the QF of a Grand Slam. Petra's rule.

Mandula almost made the QF again a couple years later, losing a close match to Rubin in 4R. She also made Top 30 and was seeded at the French late in her career. She won rounds at all of the Slams and made a couple of WTA finals. SHE RULEZ.
