"...over to Guido Quiroga: "I am 28-year old social worker from Buenos Aires. I was Guillermo Cañas's friend during his childhood and we used play tennis together in the local club. Once when we were about 8 years old Guillermo stole a drink from the club bar and was caught by barman, who gave him a good strong beating on his bottom! Guillermo cried hard so his mom was going to take him out club but president persuaded him to him stay. Later on Guillermo got revenge by throwing a water baloon at the barman." Wonderful stuff, Guido (via Benjamin Mueller's email). Thank you!"

Oops
"Break point at 30-40 on the Cañas serve... his backhand crosscourt effort drifts wide and Puerta opens the door to a famous victory!"

The first: "Mammoth rally, and Cañas comes from nowhere to win an absolute mini-classic! A standing ovation, but still match point!"

"Cañas backhands onto the top of the net... and it drops the wrong side!! GAME, SET AND MATCH MARIANO PUERTA!! He may be a journeyman, but it's a hell of a journey! The Argentine moves into his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final."

OH NO!!!!!!! I didn't know what happened in the 5th set. I decided to come here to Willy's page to find out, and I read through the last few posts with mounting trepidation, as you can imagine. I'm so sad!

Brad Gilbert called Willy "the human rain delay" because of how long he takes between points. Willy and Mary Pierce would make a nice couple!

Shame. Willy fought hard. But, in the last 2 sets, he kept hitting everything short and weak... so, Puerta outhit him. Oh well.

Cañas beat Verdasco in straight sets in Halle, plus he and Nalbandian beat Erlich/Ram in the doubles 6-3 6-3.

No he didn't -- what I was thinking of was that he reached the 's-Hertogenbosch final once.

Did he? Kewl! Mary Pierce and I think Eleni Daniilidou have done so, too. And Kristina Brandi. He's in good company! ;D

Woopsie...
Canas says he is being investigated over doping case Wed Jun 22, 2005 3:09 PM BST
BUENOS AIRES, June 22 (Reuters) - World number eight Guillermo Canas has told Argentine media that he is being investigated by the ATP over a positive doping test.
Canas, in an interview published by respected newspapers La Nacion and Clarin, said he was pulling out of the Davis Cup tie against Australia next month because of the investigation. He said that he was innocent.
"I'm being investigated by the ATP for doping," he told La Nacion, adding that the men's governing body's rules had stopped him from speaking on the matter before.
"The matter of the positive is difficult...I've never looked to taken anything extra or anything which isn't permitted to gain an advantage in tennis."

More from the Argy press..
He was tested positive last Februaryduring the Acapulco tourney.
The ATP is not confirming or denying the story, saying they will not comment until the investigation is completed.

Bad Brinyi! I knew it back in February already. Shame, shame.
So, what kind of drug this "Februaryduring" is?

Post by Brinyi on Jun 22, 2005 11:18:55 GMT -5
Februaryduring is apparently a diuretic, or so one Argy report has suggested. I don't think Willy revealed this.

Yes, given that this news is so old you'd think some of these mysteries would be cleared up by now!

It's very puzzling as Cañas is the last Argentine I would believe to use dope. But I really hate when players come up with excuses that my supplement or whatever is/are tainted. They should be very careful with what to ingest into their bodies as they are professional athletes. Also, the tennis association in Argentina should really look hard into what's happening, one way or another.
