Koubek Continues Winning WaysRoger Federer, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Jarkko Nieminen also find themselves among the final four in Munich Friday at the BMW Open in Munich top-seed Roger Federer cruised past No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzny, defeating the Russian 6-2, 6-3. The Swiss has now improved his record against the Russian to 3-0. Federer has two ATP titles under his belt this season, and on Saturday he will be among the last four for the fourth time in 2003. Stefan Koubek stunned another seed en route to the BMW Open semifinal. Yesterday he ousted No. 7 seed Tim Henman in straight sets and in the quarterfinals the Austrian defeated No. 4 seed and crowd favorite Rainer Schuettler 6-3, 6-4. Before coming to Munich, the 26-year-old Vienna resident had encountered seven consecutive opening round losses. No. 5 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov lost the first set but came back to defeat third-seed Sjeng Schalken 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3. It was the 26-year-old Dutchman that ended Kafelnikov's 28-straight match wins run in the Moscow semifinals last year. Munich is the Russian's first semifinal since reaching the final in Milan in February. Eight-seed Jarkko Nieminen scored a convincing 6-1, 6-1win over Czech Radek Stepanek to become the first player to qualify for the Munich semifinals.WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Federer: "I felt like this was my best match of this tournament. I missed a lot less today. I felt an improvement. I concentrated better and I could even have won easier but I'm happy with the way I won. I could feel I've raised game." Kafelnikov: "It was very difficult. Sjeng has been playing well the last couple of years and shown that he's a top twenty player. I haven't been playing well lately, for me this is an important tournament." About his neck "It's not 100% but it's better than yesterday and I hope it will be even better tomorrow." About playing Nieminen "He's another tough opponent. It's difficult every time we play. He beat me at the Austrailan Open, then I got my revenge in Milan and I lost again to him in Monte Carlo. But this is another tournament and I'm going to prepare well." Koubek: "I didn't know how I would play here before the tournament. I didn't have the confidence. I put on a good show today and now the confidence is there again." "I played well today and I felt well on the court. I knew he is extremely fit." Schuettler: "I'm disappointed. I'm not happy with my game today. It wasn't a good match for me. He played well and he deserved to win. He put pressure on me from the first point on and I was one step too late." Nieminen: "I've been playing really solid in the beginning of the clay court season. After Estoril I've been improving my clay court game all the time."
"I'm very satisfied with the way I'm playing. I'm always playing my best tennis this week. I think it takes one or two weeks for me to find my best form on clay."
"I trust myself more this year, I know my game better. I have more experience and confidence this year."SATURDAY MATCHES Top-seed Roger Federer, the winner of two titles in 2003, meets unseeded Stefan Koubek. Both players made their Munich debut this year. After capturing his career-third ATP title in Doha and his quarterfinal appearance in Auckland, the 26-year-old Austrian emcountered seven straight opening round losses. Fifth-seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov meets No. 8 seed Jarkko Nieminen for the fourth time this year, and the Finn won their most recent encounter at the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo event last month.
Nieminen plays in Munich for the first time, while Kafelnikov competes here for the fourth time and this marks the first year the Russian has made it past the opening round. Both players find themselves in their second semifinals of the season, following Milan, where Kafelnikov defeated the Finn before falling to Dutchman Martin Verkerk in the final.GOOOOOOOO JARKKO!

from www.bmwopen.iphitos.de/Interview - Jarkko NieminenJarkko Nieminen – Radek Stepanek 6:1, 6:1 Jarkko, how do you like your clay performance ?I´ve been playing really solid in the beginning of this clay court season. I was improving my clay court game all the time. I played well in Monte Carlo, than my game felt even better last week in Barcelona. Now I´m playing almost my best tennis. So I think in one or two more weeks I will have my best form on clay. Do you have more pressure, since you´ve been in two finals last year? Not really, because I started this year much better than last year. I made some good results in the beginning of the year. I lost five times in a row last year and this year I played much better. So I didn´t feel any pressure, when I started on clay. How big is Tennis in Finland? It´s getting bigger. It has been pretty quiet with tennis the last ten years. We had three guys in the Top 100 in the beginning of the nineties, but then there was nothing. When I broke in the Top 100 at the beginning of 2001 they started to follow tennis more. That´s like everywere, if someone is doing well, the fans follow tennis Are you popular in Finland and do the people recognize you?The notice me, when I walk down the street, more than I want.

Battle of the 21-Year-Olds As Federer Takes on Nieminen in Munich FinalJarkko Nieminen is set for his first final of the season © Getty Images Top seeded Roger Federer and No. 8 seed Jarkko Nieminen both scored comprehensive wins in the semifinals of the BMW Open by Credit Suisse in Munich. Nieminen took on Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the first semifinal, where the Russian had to retire in the beginning of the second set with a neck injury he sustained earlier in the week. After having traded breaks five times in the first set Nieminen closed out the set 6-4, lost his serve in the opening game of the second set before Kafelnikov had to call it a day after 49 minutes. In the second semifinal the Swiss No. 1 Roger Federer defeated Austrian friend Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-1 in 55 minutes. Federer was in command during the entire match and won 10 of the 11 last games of the match from 2-2 in the first set, including the last five games of the second set. Federer is aiming for title number seven, and third of 2003, while Nieminen is hoping to win the first crown of his career in his fourth try. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Nieminen: “This is not the way I wanted to win the semifinal. I feel really sorry for him. To win three tough matches and then have to retire is very sad, but sometimes sport is like this.”
“I noticed that he couldn’t serve like he normally does. He also retired against me in the doubles so I knew he had some problems.”
About the final “I’m very happy to be in the final. Tomorrow will be my fourth final and I will try to win my first title. I feel really good for the final.”Kafelnikov: “I felt ok this morning but something happened to my neck in the middle of the first set. It’s the same injury, which I had earlier in the week. “It’s disappointing to retire but I’m injured so there is nothing to do. I’ve been playing well this week.” Federer: “I had to work hard. The match was closer than the result. I tried to make as few errors as possible on my returns.” “He also had some chances and I had some luck today. I’m happy that I could close out the match at 5-1, when playing a friend there’s always a risk that he can come back. We know each other games really well.” About the final “I’m looking forward to the final. I have to watch out, he [Nieminen] is a dangerous player on clay. He looks confident, you can see that on the way he is hitting the ball. It doesn’t surprise me that he has reached the final.” Koubek: “I started the match playing well. It was a good match in the beginning. I had a lot of chances in the second set. I knew I had to risk more, and then I started to miss more as well. He had one chance and took it and finished off the match.” “He played well on the important points. He took every opportunity he got and that’s why the match went so fast. He was the better player today. It’s no shame to lose against Roger when he is playing like he was today.” “I played well this tournament, I beat a couple of good players. I have more confidence now than in the beginning of the week.”
