Olivier Rochus is a doll! I think Jarkko was tired from his doubles and earlier tough matches. Here are some quotes from Rochus's interview, post-3RD: Q. Can you tell us a bit about the match? You had a very tough first set. He's not known for giving up, but it looked like he was. OLIVIER ROCHUS: Yeah, it was strange. After the first set, I saw him a little bit down all the time. At 4‑1, you know, I thought he wouldn't play. Then he try some winners, that was it. You know, he broke me back. At 4‑3 I broke him again. I think at 7‑6, 5‑3, it wasn't there anymore. I mean, I was fighting, but he was I think in the lockers. It was very good for me. Q. Is it hard to stay focused?OLIVIER ROCHUS: Yeah, it's hard. When you see somebody not 100% in the match, you think is going to give up, is going to miss, is tough for you to play your game. But I just hang in there, I just fight, and then... Q. When you came to the net to shake his hand, was it difficult? Did you have to reach up a long way to shake his hand?OLIVIER ROCHUS: Yeah, but I played Karlovic already, so it was even tougher (smiling). © EPA Belgian Olivier Rochus (L) and Finland's Jarkko Nieminen shake hands after their third round match. Rochus won 7-6, 6-3, 6-1

I went to Wimbledon this year and I saw Jarkko's first round match against Verdasco. Before Wimbledon I liked him, but I liked the Belgian boys better. But the moment Jarkko stepped on court I totally fell in love Now Jarkko is my #1 and the Belgian boys have dropped a couple of places

Fieke, I went to your website to check out your pictures. First of all, fabulous all of them. Glad you liked my pics. I was a bit disappointed myself when I saw them because they looked very good on the small screen of my digicam, but on my computer screen they looked a bit blury Nevertheless, for me those pics bring back some lovely memories

He shot up my list of favorites with his excellent season thus far. I'm going to TMS Cincinnati in a few weeks, and he's at the top of my list of players to meet. A member of the board here met him at TMS Miami and said he was very nice.

Since we were talking racquets elsewhere, I thought I'd try to find Jarkko's stick of choice. Here it is A Wilson HyperHammer 6.1, the racquet of choice for quite a few pros Here's the review from Tennis Warehouse: Wilson's newest breed of "player's" racquet begins where it all started - with the ProStaff 6.1. Existing and time proven technologies (ProStaff, Perimeter Weighting System, Flat Beam) now mesh with Hyper Carbon and a Double Braid of graphite/kevlar. According to Wilson, this new Double Braid construction increases the strength of the racquet while maintaining a "player's" feel. The Hyper ProStaff 6.1 95 (standard) swings surprisingly lighter than its predecessor (ProStaff 6.1 Classic) but with the same extensive sweetspot we've come to know. We also found a bit less power (in comparison) probably due to a small shave in overall weight. Regardless, the Hyper 6.1 standard lends excellent stability with the substantial feel "players" love. Spin potential and control remain at a level consistent with ProStaff 6.1 quality.

Well well, it appears Jarkko will be doing some things for Finland this week This week is the Tampere challenger. Jarkko is the two-time defending champion, though he isn't playing it this year (interestingly, neither is last year's finalist Richard Gasquet, but I digress). Jarkko will hold a junior tennis clinic at the Tampere challenger on Thursday, and will play an exhibition match with Veli Paloheimo sometime this week. So it appears, he really is the local star!

Okay, so sue me, I was bored While at SteveG's site looking up challenger info, I noticed that he did a little profile on Jarkko 3 years ago, as one of his "players to watch". Unfortunately, a record of Jarkko's junior career doesn't exist anymore (or at least, not that I've been able to find), but that did pique my curiosity as to who he beat that made him look so promising Anyway, here's the profile: www.stevegtennis.com/rankings/2000/s061900.htmPlayer Profile There a quite a few Finnish players on the tour, like Tuomas Ketola and Ville Liukko, but the most promising one of them all might be top junior, Jarkko Nieminen. Jarkko is 19 years old and, last year, was one of the top junior players in the world, winning several junior's titles (5 singles and 5 doubles). In fact, courtesy of the ITF, here is Jarkko's junior record (notice any familiar names there?). Now that he is 19, he is playing on the pro tour regularly and trying to work his way up the rankings. He began to get his feet wet in July of 1999 when he took a wild card for a challenger in his home country of Finland in Tampere. He thrashed his first two opponents, losing just 6 games in the two matches. He went all the way to the semifinals and entered the rankings at #643 (quite a high debut). A few week's later at Latvia F1, he again reached the semifinals. By the end of 1999, he was ranked #587. In 2000, he started off the year in Indonesia, reaching the semifinals in both Indonesia F1 and F2. That rose his ranking to #522. Then it was onto Japan where he lost in the first round at the Kyoto challenger, the second round in Japan F1, and the quarterfinals in Japan F2. Then he reached the semifinals in Algeria F2 in May. That brought him to #474. Now this past week, he has once again stepped up to the challenger level and reached the semifinals in Espinho where he was the beneficiary of the withdrawal of Edwin Kempes which gave Jarkko a walkover into the quarters. He lost to eventual champ Tommy Robredo. That gets him 100 spots in the rankings to a career high in the of #368 and gives him a 18-8 record so far this year. At just 19 years of age, Jarkko Nieminen is coming up fast and will be trying to reach the top levels over the next few years. . . . and it appears Steve was right!

Today (July 23rd) is Jarkko's birthday I've posted it about everywhere, even bumping up my original thread on the old ATPWorld, so I should post here as well. I hope he had a nice one! He's in Finland so hopefully he had a chance to celebrate with family and/or friends Last year he was playing the Tampere challenger and they gave him a cake on court after his match.

A nice little report from Long Island 2nd Round: Nieminen Bounces Calleri By Tara De Vito Tournament Contributor August 20, 2003 Jarkko Nieminen def. Agustin Calleri, 6-1, 6-4 COMMACK, N.Y., Aug. 20 — Jarkko Nieminen, a left-hander from Finland, advanced to the quarterfinals of the TD Waterhouse Cup, this afternoon, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 6 seed Agustin Calleri, of Argentina. Nieminen remained composed, confident and focused throughout the match, despite the constant buzzing of lawnmowers and leaf blowers from a nearby yard. His steady, aggressive play enabled him to dominate most points by moving his opponent back and forth on the court. Using his lefty forehand weapon whenever he was given an approach shot, it was evident that Nieminen has no fear of playing the net. In addition to his incredible agility and ability to read the ball, Nieminen has the lefty advantage of hitting tough angles and difficult to return serves. Calleri started the second set with a clear ace that contributed to an early lead and it was apparent that he had not yet given in or given up. However, when Calleri raised his play in the second set, Nieminen used his advantages to remain on top. His impressive service games included a hold of deuce in the second game. Then, down 15-40 in the sixth game, Nieminen was able to come back and tie the set at 3-3. Thrown by Nieminen's comeback Calleri double-faulted to lose the following game. Up a break, Nieminen found himself in trouble once more, at 30-40, but was able to turn the game around by remaining calm and confident and winning the following three points. Up 5-4, Nieminen once again used his serve to gain a 40-love lead. Calleri gave his last punch to make the score 40-15, but Nieminen had already decided this match was his and won the next point to take the victory. Nieminen will play American James Blake, a straight sets winner over Tommy Robredo, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
