Which makes me realize, I don't belong in a thread about this sport ... I guess I only loved Zizou, not the Beautiful Game.

Janie, which hockey players have you heard of? ;D
The other day I gave somebody Hell for not knowing who Peter Doherty was. I know... who? I explained "he's engaged to Kate Moss". And they went "who?"
This is when I realized that I read a lot of celebrity blogs.

hmm, Hockey players I can name off the top of my head:
Wayne Gretsky, Mario Lemieux, Sergei Fedorov (for bad reasons ;D ), Eric Lindros, Simon Gagne (don't know the spelling), Bobby Clarke ;D (I hope guys from the 1970's count)
Wow, that's so bad. I'd recognize a handful of other names once I heard them, especially Flyers, but I sure can't come up with them on my own.
Anyway, having thought it over, I was wrong. I do think most Americans would have heard the name Beckham. But most would not know what sport he plays, unless they saw "Bend it Like Beckham", but they might know he's a "celebrity" and possibly an athlete of some sort.

Peter Forsberg? He's a flyer, these days. Not that anybody with a sense of pride pays attention to the Flyers lately.
Joe Sakic?
Steve Yzerman?
Brett Hull?
Martin Brodeur?
Jaromir Jagr?
Sidney Crosby?

The Sabres are average lately. They're still better than whatever 12-year olds Becky slobbers over, though.

Steve Yzerman, Martin Brodeur, Jaromir Jagr: those names I do recognize. But not the others. Don't remind me about the Flyers this year. Maybe I don't follow them or even know their names, but I hate to see them sink so low. Philly is a cursed city for pro sports.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of Brett Hull.
Should that surprise me?
I mean, he's pretty much the best player to play for the US ever. Third all-time in goals scored.
Mind you, he's really a Canadian, but that's beside the point. He played for you in the Olympics.

Well, the name Brett Hull does sound vaguely familiar. Moreso than this Peter Doherty. ;D

Okay, so I'm slow, but it's only hitting me now that we USians are going to have to get used to having Beckham & Wife SHOVED DOWN OUR THROATS TILL WE GAG. The forcing of Sharapova on us by tennis types is nothing compared to what this will be. So let's see if USians en masse will suddenly forget NASCAR and beisbol & become huge soccer fans.

Funny that the Portuguese media gave up on our national team qualifying when it was actually becoming quite obvious that they were going to make it after all even after sucking royally for almost the whole of the qualifying campaign.

It will be unfortunate for the World Cup if Portugal doesn't qualify. FIFA is praying that the biggest non-broken soccer star in the world will be on TV for weeks.
