[mind you in the US Tennis Mag article he and Hrbaty and some US athlete, don't remember who, went out on the town in L.A. to sample the nightlife! Rogi was "and impressionable Federer" at the time! Hmmm... curious... Hope she taped it!!

Why is Rogi leaving it SO late to get a game in??!! Pls ROGI, get your buns in high gear baby! My sis says to give the poor guy a break -- he's probably tired after all those matches won over the past couple of weeks or so... That said... HOPP, ROGI! get your buns in high gear baby! That just made me laugh and I need to laugh after this awful day. (yeah i think that covers it) Thanks Sue, RF, kiro, MarionMarti for cheering Rogi on. Rogi was fighting to the v end and thats what counts. Rogi's fighting spirit. :-*He said he tried his best and at least he lost to Mark and not some yucky guy. And speaking of yucky guys, now Nalby can lose! I hope Gonzo bagels him just like he did Hewitt. or will it be one of those "miss"days?! Your sis is right RF. We have to give Rogi a break. He's played so well on clay and s be ready for RG. I know I am!

Hi Lily! Yeah, trying to put today behind me... yes, he lost to Mark, so that's not TOO bad although I am a bit concerned about DC Semis now... Rogi's innocence... he said once that he doesn't go "looking for girls" and prefers that "it" just happen naturally... well, he doesn't HAVE to look for girls -- they look for him! He can just rest up and prepare for RG [like Juanqui is!]. Did I tell you we saw Guga/Davydenko today for 90mns. Not the most exciting match but at least Guga won it. Vera is trying to predict who we'll get tomorrow afternoon at 1pm... can't be the evening match. But now I don't really care who wins, exc NOt you-know-who! Just read a Fren article saying that for the first time since 96 there is NO Spanish in the QF here! The Argies are suddenly dethroning the Spaniards on clay! ay, no! Glad there's a Swiss in there amongst them!

After all the sad Rogi articles, here's a nice one Federer can win all four grand slams - Fitzgerald MELBOURNE, May 15 (Reuters) - Switzerland's Roger Federer is the top player in the world this year and is capable of winning all four grand slam tournaments during his career, Australia Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald said on Thursday. The 21-year-old, who has claimed three titles in 2003, will lead the Swiss in their Davis Cup semi-final against Australia in Melbourne later this year. "(He is) arguably at the moment the form player in the world," Fitzgerald told reporters. Federer is ranked third in the ATP Champions' Race. "He's a great player and I think he's a player who, when he wins his first major, he'll win three or four, maybe five of them," Fitzgerald said. "Federer - I would say he's the best player that we will have come up against in my three years," Australia's non-playing captain added. "He has a game which can win on every surface, which is unusual. There are not many guys around that you could say could win at any major, any of the four, and he's one of them." The Australians, whose team includes Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and former U.S. Open finalist Mark Philippoussis, are strong favourites to win the September 19-21 tie. Australia lost the 2001 Davis Cup final to France on a Rebound Ace surface the last time they played at Melbourne Park. "That final was like one of my best memories and one of my worst memories all wrapped up in one," Fitzgerald said.

Interesting how Coria d Flip today [someone also said Mark couldn't handle Coria's topspin]: ... CORIA b PHILIPPOUSSIS 6-2 6-0 Guillermo Coria became the second Argentine to reach the semi-finlas after a swift 56 minute victory over the Scud Mark Philippoussis. Coria took control of the match since the very beginning pounding Philippoussis with strong groundstrokes and volleys. It was not a pretty sight for the Australian who struggled with his game and was never able to really get into the match. Philippoussis broke a raquet in desperation while Coria moved smoothly into the semi-finals. Coria was able to take advantage of a dismal performance by Philippoussis as the Australian made 31 unforced errors against just six from the 12th-seeded Coria. "It went faster than I expected, but when he was doing serve and volley I could return very well, and from the back of the court I could dictate the points and he didn't know what to do," said Coria. "Each match I play I keep getting better, and I hope that by the time I get to Roland Garros I will be 10 out of 10. That is my goal." This week is the first time that four players from Argentina have reached the quarter-finals of a Master Series event and Coria said he hoped the success of the Argentine players would bring some welcome good news to his country. "It gives our country something to cheer about," he said. "There has been a lot of bad news from Argentina, and I think our sportsmen can give our people something to think about which is positive." ... source www.eurosport.comEither Coria or Calleri -- that's who I want now.

geez, what the hell is going on in men's tennis?
They showed Gaudio/Coria instead of Nal & Calleri. The first 2 sets were an amazing display of just how clay court tennis should be played. Then, at the 11th game of the second set, Coria serving 40-15 to tie it 6/6 . he took a 3 minute injury break. (cramp, as Gaudio paced back & forth. Then in the second point of the tie break, the umpire thought Coria had called "out" (at first he said "stop" !) Coria said he didn't say anything. The commentators said he didn't say anyhing, the umpire made a big mistake, in effect calling Coria a liar, and Coria was very upset. and was warned for unsportsmanlike behaviour. He lost the tie-break . Then Gaudio was called for unsportsmanlike behaviour for tossing one racket too many, and his game completely fell apart. The umpire's mistake put a sour note into what was until that point a brilliant display of tennis. Coria hobbled off the court and shook the umpire's hand but didn't give him a dirty look. Why on earth don't they have instant replays as in hockey, for example. There are big matches, big money, & titles at stake here? Or is the wronged player supposed to take it "like a man" Nonsense. I hope Coria can make it through a 5 setter tomorrow.

Rogi's interviews from Hamburg Federer vs. Mirnyi 6:3, 6:3 13.05.2003 Q: It seems you recovered very quickly? A: There weren't many long rallies today. It wasn't very physical. It was more like a doubles match. You have to be sharp on the big points and try to get as many opportunities as possible and then not miss them. It was a dangerous match, because of the different conditions. Last week was fast, slippery. This one is slow and you get stuck very quickly. It's a quite dangerous surface right now. I hit half an hour before this match. Q: Drawing someone like him would be a good draw? A: Maybe, after playing a lot it's maybe a better draw, but I can say this after I beat him. If I had lost, I would have said it's the worst draw, because you don't get any rhythm at all. I think I was fortunate today. Quite a few points went my way. I got a few let calls when I needed them. I guess defending champions get some luck. Q: After two quite full weeks playing, how do you feel physically and mentally now? A: Sunday, I was terribly tired and also hurting. I had a day of rest even though I had to travel. But, I still feel much better now, sitting here after a match. I hope I can get the rhythm as quick as possible, because I didn't get it. Q: Even if it gets much warmer and the sun shines brightly, how different is this court from Paris? A: I don't know. It's just in this cold conditions, the court is terrible. I mean, in any city, in any country, because you make a lot of holes in the court and then you get a lot of bad bounces. Right now it's terrible when you play long to the baseline, you get 50% of bad bounce. Maybe people don't realise this, but you are always a little on the back foot waiting for the bad bounce to come. The French Open, I don't know, is quite similar I guess. Q: A lot of players say that the court has a different texture? A: I'm not a specialist and don't work in this business. Q: You've got two Masters Series events and the French Open in a few weeks. Is it difficult to peak for each event? A: I think these back-to-back Masters Series is something to think about for sure, because I find it very extreme. At the same time the focus is so big on the Slams with which I don't agree at all. I am playing my seventh match in eight days. In the French Open, to win you have to play seven to win the whole tournament in two weeks. It's not logic. Plus the Slams get all the attention and Rome and Hamburg don't. I don't agree with this way of thinking. I believe that last week and this week are very very big and important tournaments and this is why I'm not trying to think too much about the French Open. I just try to play well in Rome, to defend my title here and then when I go from here, I can start to make my French Open preparation. Right now, I just try to win as many matches as I can, to move up in the rankings and play well. Q: Are you saying that Rome and Hamburg are really too close to the French Open? A: The same as maybe Indian Wells and Key Biscayne and Toronto and Cincinnati. Maybe it's too many Masters Series. It's just difficult. Key Biscayne is o.k., because you have a bigger draw, the seeds get a by and it's played over 9, 10 days. That's why Indian Wells in front is o.k. But here it's very tough. When the players are in the finals you only get one day rest, if they play on Tuesday. Q: Do you think when you've got back-to-back masters you only should have a 32 draw? A: That would be one of the options, or make it longer. But, we shouldn't worry about these things right now. Here in this tournament trying to do our best. Q: Coming back as the title defendant, how is it different? A: It's special for me to come back, because I cracked top 10 here last year. It was a big step in the right direction for me here last year. I had some problems with clay courts. I always believed I could play well on clay. I proved it again in Munich last week. So, I am happy that I can play well on clay. In the Davis Cup I showed it and now I can also show it on the Tour, which is nice. It's a nice event. Hopefully the weather gets better. Q: Is it much much slower than in Rome? A: I played 1 þ hours on this court and the court seems definitely slower. And also the ball travels slower. Just with the heat you can feel the difference. Q: Have you played the Armenian guy already? A: Yes, I played him at the French Open 2 or 3 years ago. I beat him in 5 sets, came back from 2:0. And I played him indoors in Milan and beat him in three sets. I think, we always had tough matches. So, I'm looking forward to it. source: www.root3dbt.de/masters2003/

Federer vs. Sargsian 6:1, 6:1 14.05.2003 Q: Were you trying to beat the dark? A: Yes, kind of. It was already dark and the wind made it quite difficult with the eyes. I felt like kind of tears coming when it's so cold and windy. So, I am very happy to have made it through, because I knew they were going to put us last if we don't finish. Q: This is obviously one of the best matches you played in a while. Is this the best? How do you compare it to the last two weeks? A: I beat Robredo last week :1, :1 as well in a different kind of match. Here it's uncomfortable to play in these conditions and you hope you get off the court as soon as possible. You try to move as much as you can on the court not to be cold. But everything kind of hurts a little, because it's so cold. Every stretch you have to do hurts double. But, I definitely didn't miss much, focussed well and I'm very happy. I didn't expect it. Q: Did you expect more from him? A: I guess I played it smart; played a lot to his forehand, his weaker side. He missed a lot there. And at breakpoint, I just kept that going and it worked fine. Suddenly the match went fast. I hung in there in the second to get the double break. Q: A few words on Philipoussis. Have you played him before? A: I played him twice: Davis Cup in Zurich and in Miami a couple of years ago. I beat him twice. We've never faced each other on clay. So, I really hop I can get an edge on him. Q: On clay, what do you think will be the major difference against him compared to other surfaces? A: It's not going to change too much. The game is going to be similar to hard court, I guess. I feel like I'm moving more natural than him. He also had a few good results on clay and he's always dangerous with his big serve. So, I haven't really seen him much around lately. I guess because of injuries and we've been playing different tournament. So, I have to be ready for the big serve, but I'm ready for more rallies also. source: www.root3dtb.de/masters2003/

Philippoussis vs Federer 6:3 2:6 6:3 15.05.2003 Q: Roger, you started very well, but you didn't seem to be able to keep that level throughout the match. Can you analyse it a bit? A: Yes. The first set was strange, but good for me. I started well, felt good also. I didn't feel good on my serve. I didn't get enough free points and couldn't play as aggressive. I didn't feel comfortable out there after 3:0 until the end. That was tough. I wasn't happy with my game today, but I tried my best. It was tough in the conditions. Q: Are you quite pleased to get a couple of extra days before the first round in Paris. A: No, this is the worst questions. I just lost here as the title holder. I'm not happy to have more extra days for Paris. Q: What is in your plan between now and Paris? A: I will go back, for sure rest a few days, for sure practise a few days. I will go a few days earlier to Paris to get ready, to get used to the balls, the courts, the different venue. And then hopefully do better than last year. Q: You seemed at the end that you were coming back. Did you feel it too? A: Yes. Just to go down 5:0 is the biggest mistake. Maybe I was a bit unlucky, the one break point just didn't go my way. I could have broken back earlier to 4:1 and I missed my chance. I guess 5:0 was too much to come back, but I hung in there, but it wasn't enough. Q: With playing the last 2 þ weeks were you maybe a little tired? A: No, I didn't feel tired out there. All in all, I'm pleased the way the clay court season has started for me. I'm going to take this to the practise sessions I will have before the French Open. Right now the disappointment is big to lose such a match, because I never felt that I got going after a 3:0 in the third set. It's quite disappointing to lose such a match. Q: What was the turning point after being 3:0 up and then losing 7 games in a row? A: Well, I came back. It was one set all, so it was back to 0. I got my chance and took it and brought it to the third. Otherwise, I could have been here already an hour earlier. But, still I didn't feel comfortable. It's not concerning, but it doesn't make me happy. source: www.root3dbt.de/masters2003/

Thanks for posting the interviews Lily. But even better..you can hear sweet Roger himself! If you go to the Hamburg site and click on *Live* then click on *Interviews*, you can scroll down and see two of Rogers interviews! SO sweet...he does half in English and then half in German...sigh. BTW RF...I think the taped ATP show I saw must be the same interview that you've seen...he's wearing all white, in shorts and Peter is there...he talks about being worried that no-one would know who he was in the *New Balls* campaign..and later says that he used to throw loads of racquets and does this really funny noise like his racquet flying through the air. Then he says that he used to be really shy talking to girls , that he didn't know what to talk to them about, but that he's better now ( and Peter laughs and puts his thumb up!), and then says that Roger likes it better when girls go up to him because he's shy...and lazy!! Lovely interview....lovely Roger

It's that time of year again... leading up to the French Open 2003!! Federer: on the offensive By Eric Salliot Monday, May 19, 2003 Last year Roger Federer arrived at Roland Garros with a billing as a "good outside bet". After all, he had just thrashed Marat Safin (6/1, 6/3, 6/4) in his first Masters Series final in Hamburg. Eight days later though, he was on his way home, the victim of a surprisingly inspired performance by Hicham Arazi – and the heavy going on a rain-laden court. Caution, therefore, is the watchword this time around for one of the tournament's major draws. Roger has won more matches than anyone else this season on his way to three titles, and anyone who has seen him in action knows why. His easy action and ability to hit virtually every shot in the book on every surface make him an outstanding talent. But in tennis, as in other sports, technical virtuosity is never enough. If he is to win Roland-Garros, he will need to acquire the all-important killer-instinct of some lesser-talented opponents. At least as far as Rosset The recent Masters Series in Rome was a case in point. After impressive wins over Mathieu, Robredo, Volandri and Ferrero (retired injured), the big Swiss fell at the final hurdle against pugnacious Spaniard Felix Mantilla, who won 14 out of 17 break points to triumph 7/5, 6/2, 7/6. "Never again", the big Swiss has been quoted as saying since, but only time will tell whether he really has learnt his lesson. Swedish ex- pro Peter Lundgren's protégé has yet to reach the semi-finals in a Grand Slam, which partly explains why he remains 5th in the ATP rankings. In January, in the first major of the year, he only managed the last sixteen before being dumped out by David Nalbandian at the end of a five-set thriller. He'll be hoping for better things in Paris, but according to Mantilla will need to work on at least one aspect of this game: "Roger can overrun you with three big forehands but his backhand isn't as strong". We shall see how it stands up on the Roland-Garros clay. If he manages to deal with the fact that the ball inevitably comes back to you in Paris (Gianni Clerici called him a snob in la Republicca for the frustration he has shown in this respect in the past), and manages to slug it out on the big points, then maybe, just maybe, Spanish hegemony will be threatened. He won't be the first Swiss to make waves in Paris either; Marc Rosset reached the semis in 1996 and was only beaten by another exponent of the attacking game, Michael Stich. Now 21, it is surely time for Roger to at least equal his Davis Cup doubles partner's achievement – which would set him up nicely for the grass of Wimbledon, where, by his own admission he "fancies his chances better". Those who saw him beat Pete Sampras on Centre Court two years ago would no doubt agree, but meanwhile he'll be looking to entertain. source www.rolandgarros.com
