Federer ends Roddick charge
Game-by-game action as young American Andy Roddick takes on Switzerland's Roger Federer for a place in the Wimbledon men's singles final.

Third set

At 30-30 Federer was just two points from victory and he moved to match point with a glorious cross-court forehand past the stranded Roddick.
The American managed to save it but was immediately passed again - this time by a backhand - as he was lured to the net.
Federer then missed a backhand but forced another match point with a fine volley and closed the game out as Roddick pulled a forehand into the tramlines.

Federer is playing near-flawless tennis and he throws in another ace as he moves to within one game of his first Wimbledon final.

Roddick is grimly hanging on but Federer looks much the classier player and he produces a delightful volley, a dismissive pass and his 13th ace on his way to three set points.
He finally closes out the set after a fine rally when he produces a whipped forehand from almost under net and when the two players sit down both have smiles on their faces - even Roddick appreciated the quality of the winning shot.

Roddick looks more fired up following his minor outburst in the last game and holds his serve without dropping point.
During the game he serves only his fourth ace of the match - a telling statistic.

Roddick loses his cool with the umpire after he fails to reach a ball which bounced twice, despite the umpire clearly calling "not up".
It looks as though Roddick is trying to fire himself up but he loses the next two points, and the game, as Federer produces two sublime shots to close out the game.

Federer finishes off a fine rally with a smash to make it 30-30 on Roddick's serve but the American serves his way out of trouble to remain one break behind.

Federer cruises through his service game and the Swiss player, who is a break up, looks in total control of the match.

He manages to dig himself out of trouble initially but then hands Federer another break point and the Swiss takes it when he finally passes Roddick at the third attempt after a thrilling rally.

Roddick is struggling when Federer gets his first serve in but the Swiss player misses several in the opening game of the second set and Roddick forces his first break points of the match.
Federer saves the first with a delightful drop volley and the second with his ninth ace before firing down his 10th to hold.
First set

After Federer misses a fairly simple volley which would have put him 5-2 up, Roddick wins three points in a row to lead 5-4.
Federer levels at 5-5 but Roddick runs round his backhand and drills a forehand at Federer, who can only put it into the net to hand the American set point on his serve.
Roddick wastes it by drilling a forehand into the net and then finds himself set point down as Federer rips a forehand down the line to break him again.
The Swiss player then makes no mistake on his own serve to take the first set.

Federer's fifth and sixth aces help him win his serve easily and take the first set to a tie-break.

A misjudgement from Roddick, who leaves an easy ball which drops well in, suggests the American is still fairly tense despite being 10 games into the match.
Although Roddick has the bigger serve he is under more pressure than his opponent, but after being taken to 30-30 he comes up with some heavy shots to edge ahead again.

The clash of styles between the languid Federer and the aggressive Roddick is clear.
However, Federer has power of his own and fires a couple of aces as he wins his serve without dropping a point for the second game in a row.

Although he does not have a reputation as a natural volleyer Roddick is coming to the net on occasion and winning the point. He wins his serve without too much trouble, although Federer looks as though he can handle it better than most.

Federer serves out to love and immediately changes his racquet.
Roddick 4-3 Federer
Roddick unleashes a ferocious drive volley to win the first point of the game but at 40-love down Federer comes up with two fine shots to put some pressure on the American.
However he fires in another heavy serve to win the often crucial seventh game.
Roddick 3-3 Federer
Roddick collects a ball which was not called out to fall 30-love down on Federer's serve. The Swiss player then hits an ace to go 40-love up and rips a forehand down the line to close the game out.
Roddick 3-2 Federer
Roddick is hitting his serves at 130mph-plus, and although Federer is getting a racquet on them he is struggling to get his returns over the net.
Roddick 2-2 Federer Another solid service game from Federer, which sees him hitting a high percentage of first serves, enables him to level the match with few alarms.
Roddick 2-1 Federer
Federer forces a break point as he lures Roddick to the net and then blazes a forehand past the American.
But Roddick has only lost his serve three times at Wimbledon this year and he plays his way out of trouble before winning the game with a thumping smash from mid-court.

Federer opens up with a solid service game as the two players ease their way into what has the potential to be the match of the tournament so far.

Roddick wins the first two points before a sumptuous clean backhand winner gives Federer his first point of the match.
A winning volley and his first ace of the match ensure Roddick wins his serve without too much trouble.
