Martina played pretty well... however, she's crushed most scrubs like this throughout the year.
She's still far too content to sit in slugging rallies, though.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying she's a favorite now or anything like that. Her current form is alot better than I expected. She's staying in those rallies, but I did notice her throwing in alot more topspin and mixing things up today. The BH up the line was a great way to end the match, though.

Martina has still soundly beaten the Nakamuras and Benesovas of the tennis world. And those are better than Johansson. Maybe not Iveta, anymore...
I've bitched about Martina playing into the power hitters' game since she beat Lindsay at IW like 2 years ago. I'm stubborn.
But, I've expected more from Martina. Even if she loses, I wanted to see her have fun, at least. Now she sucks, and she's boring like the rest of the women's game.

Why?
Because a dog does most of the acting.

I need explaining on that one.
And Julia has REALLY struggled lately. That's a shocking result.
She's very pretty in her WTA profile, though. Go Julia. Don't open that mouth.

Vak winning that is ... well, it was always possible, but after how lethargic she looked in Toronto, it's a surprise, yes.
Michael Russell isn't so thrilling. And ... he choked in those tiebreaks!

A-Rad has no shot at Shrieky. I'd give Razzano a better chance, even. Oh. Yoon-Jeong Cho! She's playing! Special entry, obviously ... she's ranked #705. I still have a vivid memory of watching her play Seles here in 2002 - the third round. That was the match where Monica led 6-1 5-1 and almost lost - that after Ted Robinson asked rhetorically at 6-1 4-1 bp Seles, "This is as good as a matchpoint, right?" Well, no fuckhead, it wasn't. And they never are. Anyway, the wind picked up, Monica started making errors, bam, second set to Cho 7-5. And a decent effort in the third, losing admirably 3-6. I don't like Ted.

I should note that the morning she played Seles I had the worst hangover ever. Fuck, was it brutal. I was laying there on the couch praying to die while listening to friggin' Ted Robinson tell me how the world is. What a sad, sad state. N E WAY, Cho is leading LDL 6-3 2-2. May this continue.

Cho up 2-0 and serving in the third set. Paszek up 4-3 on Arn, break in hand. I like Arn, but it would be a bad loss for Tamira to lose to her ... Tu serving up 2-0 on Peer, and that is an upset I'm hoping for.

Post by Grarliner on Aug 28, 2007 18:40:55 GMT -5
It looks like Vinci is going to be totally blown away. It's interesting that Maria finds herself in nearly the same situation she was in last year at this time: needing to win the US Open to validate her ranking and status. She did last year. This year ... who knows ... Paszek 6-4 1-0. Lourdes has put her match with Cho back on serve at 3-3. Same with Tu-Peer.

Day 2.
Aug 28, 2007 18:55:08 GMT -5
Post by sasha on Aug 28, 2007 18:55:08 GMT -5
Even if Maria wins again here, it will be tough for her to keep #2 over Jankovic for the rest of the year.
Due to the increase in ranking points this year, all those QF's that Jelena had last fall don't even count to her ranking with how much she's played this year. So, all she can do is gain after the Open.
Whereas Shriekapova has to defend Zurich and Linz titles, so all she can do is lose.

Post by Grarliner on Aug 28, 2007 19:22:44 GMT -5
I wasn't speaking too literally when I mentioned her defense of her ranking. She's got to win here to prove to people that she belongs up so high - that she is as good as #2 or #1 or #3 or whatever. That's what I mean.
Paszek d. Arn 4 and 4.
LDL d. Cho, who has been gone for about 18 months. 3-6 6-3 6-3.
Maria was blazing today. Vinci could do nothing.

A-Rad has no shot at Shrieky. I'd give Razzano a better chance, even. Ditto. Pushers/junkballers sometimes take Maria to the brink, but she almost never actually loses to them. Saw about half of Dr. Ivo's fifth set. It was the first time I saw him play, and I expected him to be clumsy and awkward, but not this much. But at least he's different. Eurosport again showed a lot of those boring matches between mid-ranked ATP players today, and they all play the same.

Damn, Dani. 6-1 in the third? To Julia? Who as Leena points out, really blows lately? Ouch. But, that's Dani. She played that marathon against Pin a couple years back. Plus, she lost to Gloria. Pretty much nothing beats that.
Martina at least looked like she was having some fun on court today. It's all in her head. If she's healthy for most of the year, she's still going to be a top ten player. But, again, I doubt that's enough for her. 4r here would be a good result for her. Let's see if she gets there.
