Q. Your sister was in here earlier after her win, and she talked about you actually have talked to her through the years about trying to learn from your...
MARAT SAFIN: My mistakes, yes. (laughter.)
Q. Can you just give us a couple minutes what you think of what she's done professionally so far this year in particular and maybe what her chances are?
MARAT SAFIN: I think if she will do everything opposite of what I've been doing throughout the years she will be No. 1 in the world for a long time. That's as simple as it is.

Well put. I tried to come up with a similar sentence earlier but failed.
Meanwhile, Görges is losing against Beltrame-Bremond, and Kiefer has "shoulder problems" (yeah right). But Eurosport is showing sexy Mattek against pretty Marta.

Thiago Alves def. Capdeville. The funny thing is that I saw Alves play at the final round of Bundesliga (2nd division :red: ) 10 days ago. It was on clay at a small club but he was definitely in another league compared to the other players. Well his team won (beat my home team Bremerhaven ) so they will get promoted. 2 days later he played the USO quali. His next opponent will be Federer, probably. The world is small.

I've never understood those national leagues in tennis. Do people really gather to cheer on their team, like in football? That would be strange. Although, I remember reading an interview with Ana Timotic or such similar scrub where she said she actually makes most of her earnings playing the leagues in Germany, Spain etc., so I guess there must be at least some money there.

Post by GoDom on Aug 26, 2008 21:17:24 GMT -5
I don't really understand it either. Although there are leagues in other countries too, it's most established in Germany. We have leagues in all sports, even chess. It's probably because of our club system which is ingrained into our culture. To do anything in Germany, you usually have to join a club ("Verein"). In sports you then form club teams which compete against teams of other clubs in leagues, with promotion and relegation. This happens down to the lowest levels and with different age groups. Yes, people gather to cheer. The question is how many people. At that Bundesliga match, probably about 600. In my local club, 3 or 4 if we are lucky, although it used to be better. Football is of course way above everything else, but even in the other sports club members tend to identify with their teams. Anyway, in tennis most top teams consist of foreign players, because German players are more expensive and lazier. They seem to like it though, the close contact to the fans and the German Gemütlichkeit. And of course they have the comfort of a secure pay-check, whether they win or lose. But even the top leagues rely heavily on sponsoring and/or patrons with lots of money, because ticket sales won't cut it. What I don't understand is why even 4th or 5th division teams buy foreign players. There is nothing to achieve on that level, and no one cares. Anyway, I heard that there's no one watching the matches in other countries, so Germany is special in that regard.

Yeah, but if Mattek's game is laughable, what about Marta's game then? Mattek fights and seems to enjoy things. Not too bad. That match was just awful. Almost as bad as Venus/Stosur. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with Domachowska's game from a technical POV, yet she sprays errors all over the place. Reminds me of Na Li.
