Cirstea is such a clean hitter. Excellent serve too. If she wasn't such a pathetic choker, she'd make it big.

4-2 40-15 up and started bashing forehands into the net. Oh well, at least she's pretty. I hope she doesn't start to cry with all that mascara she has on, though.

Day 3.
Aug 27, 2008 11:00:24 GMT -5
Post by Iorix on Aug 27, 2008 11:00:24 GMT -5
Why do the commentators still keep up with this "Kuznetsova is mentally weak" crap? For years now Sveta has been on the receiving end of countless chokes, and rarely, if ever, chokes herself. If she can't quite succeed against the elite, or in big stakes matches, it's because she just isn't good enough for that, not because "she doesn't believe she can do it".

Aug 27, 2008 11:06:20 GMT -5
Post by Edna Krabappel on Aug 27, 2008 11:06:20 GMT -5
It's probably because people usually see her play horrible tennis in semis and finals, so they assume she's mentally frail and blah. Sweata is relatively rarely shown in opening rounds so people don't get to see that she's equally poor there, but the players she beats are even worse.

Chak has much the same problem I guess. People, particularly in the US, only got to see her on that USO SF, or when she's getting raped by Sharapova, so they assume she's always crap. I mean, nowadays she certainly is, but she was extremely fun to watch back in late 06-early 07.

Plus, it's less rude to attribute her inexplicable errors to mental frailty - which for ages I blamed too - than to laziness, dumbness and lack of thought, which it actually is. Half of her random errors come because she can't be bothered to move her feet, or to actually aim the ball anywhere.
Keothavong a set up on Schiavone. That will not last!

FWIW, I thought the Sweta/Serena Miami SF was one of the best matches of the year. Me too. But you're right, Sveta's footwork is often lazy and her point construction skills can be abysmal.

Titszek gets mauled by Rybarikova. I haven't seen Magdalena play since that junior Wimby final, when I thought she had more game than Wozniacki. I'm curious to see how she has progressed. Just about everyone has more game, or at least more weapons, than Wozniacki. But she does that magical thing called "keeping the ball in".

I've buried Schiavone several times before, but this time it may well be it. She hasn't achieved anything significant for months now.
I was never actually a fan, but it was nice having her around. Contradiction in terms: her actual strokes were godawful, but her game as a whole was lovely to watch.

Why can't we have a single decent commentator. They're either raging lunatics who should be locked up somewhere (national TV) or so boring they suck life out of everything they commentate on (Eurosport). These people would turn the Henin vs Capriati USO epic into a sleeping pill. I'm pretty sure the suicide rate has gone up since the introduction of Serbian commentators to Eurosport.

Bepa lost. L.A. Leach's section is opening up very nicely now.
What's that? A British woman winning Slam matches outside of Wimbledon. Uh. Congrats to Anne, I guess.
Wow. What a tiebreak from Arvidsson from 3-0 down. JJ's game needs FIRED! Her dress is hawt tho.

Loss to Zheng in the next round, then? Watching Ventura vs Tsonga, of all things. Ventura is totally wacky! Dropshots, lobs, dropshot-lob-dropshot combos, genius changes of direction out of nowhere. I didn't realise he was so Santoro-esque. Sadly, he often tries to be too cute, and when you start missing the dropshots, you start looking really dumb, not like a clever magician. And while he plays beautiful setpiece points, he barely seems to have a match plan at all. Tsonga's knee has definitely had its work cut out for it, but it's holding up so far. It's a nice match-up for him to get into the swing of things, he's been able to tee off Ventura's weak-ass groundstrokes and second serve many times. Lots of dumb errors 50 miles out earlier on, less now. Lolz, Jankovic, FORMER WORLD NUMBER ONE lest we forget. Way to take advantage of your first Top 8 seeding at a Slam, Bepa
