Wow, lots of fun surprises this morning. Dubois! Bally! KIMIKO! This AO is off to a great start so far.

Two GBR qualifiers I guess that phenomenon of one girl breaking through and dragging others from her country in her wake is true. U-Rad lost to Dubois Actually disgusting. She should have just played Hobart out. Thunder and Krumm Of course, it had to be Schruff who drew Mayr in the MD Sesil has a really great shot at the 3rd round, though, where she will be double bagelled by Silliams. I think Oudin will make the 3rd round too (sadly, this will be at the expense of Akgul and Tammy).

Sprem now has to try to trip up the surprisingly effective comeback of Katalin Marosi-ex-Aracama, career high ranking #101. One of the stars of the "highest ranked players never to reach the top 100" thread at TF. Barrois languished in there for ages. Jeepers Scheepers made it in! Didn't think that would ever happen Scheepers career-high ranking was in 2003. She reminds me of Skavronskaia: challenger veteran with consistent results who never had shown signs of being able to claw her way up the rankings before qualifying for a GS MD. Some differences: Skavronskaya dwelt around #150, whereas Scheepers has been ranked around #200-250 for several years; Skavronskaia qualified for the 2006 USO near the end of her career, whereas Scheepers is 24 y.o. Vögele being so focused and cool-headed oncourt makes up for some of her shortcomings, but she really is nothing but a pocket Timea B. Woerle hadn't qualified for a GS MD in exactly three years.

hello lexpretend and ancient rui - even though it really is "Aniceto". Two GBR qualifiers I guess that phenomenon of one girl breaking through and dragging others from her country in her wake is true. Plus becoming something of a laughingstock (hohoho hopeless Brits hohoho) and the end of the undeserved Wimbledon WCs probably motivated some to work harder and play themselves to the ground in the challenger circuit, instead of relying on their (nonexistent) talent to break through.

Damn you Krumm. You aren't supposed to qualify for a Slam when I have written you off.

(And no, I'm not being facetious. An abrupt all-Willies retirement would leave TWO USians in the Top 100, Mattek (skips Grand Slams due to wedded bliss) and Craybas (900 years old). All of a sudden, Vania King looks like Ashe Stadium night match material.) I hadn't noticed Mattek's absence. She's at a career high (and probably maxing out her talent), winning a round or two here could make the difference between cracking the top 30 in her career or not, it's a SLAM FFS, and she skips it to honeymoon? Having had an entire off-season to do that? Idiot. Oh, I forgot, "having a life outside of tennis" takes precedence now.

I respect being unique and fashionable, but Bethanie is a clown.

You're surprised at Bethanie Mattek's ugly dress/guy?

Not surprised about the dress...disappointed, though. At least pick something close to white. Marriage-as-death-metaphor is so over.
I am very surprised about the guy, though! She is a fit, successful athlete. She doesn't need to marry an accountant. She needed to marry a soccer player, or a model, or something.

Eh, it's better than the gross and slightly weird father-figure coach double their age that most of the WTA opt for. At least he's making his own money.
