How is it possible for him to hear her on court? Shriver's criticism was correct, and she shouldn't have stopped just because of that (though...they should definitely have sorted out the sound, or whatever enabled him to hear her, players don't need that). But all your USian commentators must insist on talking through points, sigh. Also: Oprandi/Watson is a very watchable match.

Yes, Pam should have tried toning down her voice. She whispers when she's on court. If you're so loud that a player can understand what you're saying, then there's an obvious problem. Don't act like it's James' fault. Sure, he could have handled it better... but, he's getting his ass kicked, I'm sure he knows he's sucked lately and his career is near dead, and he's getting verbally crushed by his own announcers while he's playing. I wouldn't be pleasant in that situation, either.
And I'm a Pamela fan and a Flake hater, so I'm not biased here.

How loud was Bitchelle today? I heard so much about her screams and I didn't hear any from her tonight. Of course I was at work and I was upping the sound just to hear her, but all I heard was Serena. Was it because the points were so short that Michelle didn't have the opportunity? I couldn't see the end of the match, so maybe she was louder then? So WTAW is reporting that Michelle hasn't been screaming on court for a while now, don't know if it's true, but today Serena was way louder then her when I was watching.

Stosur lost to KKK, which makes me feel OK about Fran's loss.
KKK could reach the SF without dropping a set.

Watson is pretty great! Love the way she thought herself into this match - Oprandi was playing really well at the start, but since the second set Watson's dissected her quite neatly. She's smart, she's got variety, she's hit some great volleys and - probably most impressively - I don't think I've seen her fluff a single putaway so far.

It must have been quite disconcerting and Shriver should have shut the hell up. I like Blake and hate Shriver, so I am totally unbiased here.

Bagh lost to the Eastbourne Wooden Spoon winner Lacko. Krumm is really battling vs DulgheROU!

The BBC don't seem to be showing Mirjana. I'm watching on atdhe.net It's weird, it's obviously a BBC stream with BBC commentators, and yet it is nowhere on TV or on the BBC site

Great stuff to get back to 3-4* there. I shouted "COME ON!" in tandem with Mirjana

The same match on two different channels ALL DAY LONG. Or since I got home. It's ridiculous. And they only show matches I don't care about. Now it's Verdasco vs Fognini.

Neither, I thought. Given Azza didn't seem injured like some people expected, it could have been worse. Too many errors, but it wasn't embarrassing.

I didn't even see the match, and this has to be the right answer. Lucic has a career high ranking of #33. This can't be a surprise that needs to be explained.

Azza played really well. Just absorbed all of Lucic's pace and kept her own errors to a bare minimum. It made for some really entertaining, punishingly hard rallies, many of which ended in a Lucic error because she just couldn't hit through Azza with any consistency.
It was pretty special to see her on Centre again, though. There was one point where I had a total flashback to her match against Seles - a completely identical inside-out BH winner.

Wow. I can't imagine what it must have been like for her to be out there again after so long. So glad she didn't embarrass herself with 20 DFs or anything like that.

Huh, what is she supposed to do, to start whispering on television because a loser who can't focus on his match can hear her? Well, she could try being good at her job. That'd be a decent place to start.

Busted Racquet Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:47 pm EDT Video: James Blake yells at ESPN commentator during match By Chris Chase American tennis player James Blake shouted at ESPN commentator Pam Shriver during his match at Wimbledon on Tuesday because he felt the former tennis pro was talking too loudly during points. Shriver was live on the air on ESPN when Blake yelled at her following a key unforced error on a second-set break point: Shriver's voice is as soothing as a vuvuzela and equally as loud. She's practically shouting during the point. Watching this live, I assumed Shriver wasn't on Court 5 and was offering her commentary while watching a feed of the match elsewhere, and that was before Blake yelled anything. Golf and tennis announcers have always had to talk in a loud whisper. Did Shriver think she was in a crowded pub nearby the All England Club? When Blake calls her out (with the perfectly-delivered line "I can't belive you played tennis, I can still hear you") Shriver sounds like she can't fathom why Blake would be mad. Then, to top it off, she continues to talk loudly during the next point. Blake's next line ("You wanna be an [three-letter expletive] about it and act like I'm at fault?") makes it seems as if he heard what Shriver said. She defends herself again, whereupon ESPN cut to a shot of Rafael Nadal walking onto Centre Court. Don't blame Blake for this. He was down a set and a break, frustrated and clearly let a little noise get into his head to bother him even more. Should he have been more focused? Absolutely. But just because he was losing doesn't mean he's not entitled to a quiet atmosphere. Blake didn't step over the line, he rightfully called out obnoxious behavior from someone who should know better. Update: Pam Shriver later admitted that she was talking loudly during her first time broadcasting from Court 5, but stopped short of offering an apology, which she needed to do. She said she regrets telling Blake to "concentrate" though and shouldn't get involved with a player.
