I can't find where I predicted that Fran's title defense would be like Costa's in 2003 - a "fluke" winner not near their peak form, never expected to repeat, but just fighting their way through so many tight matches and taking so much pleasure in the process of defending their title despite the odds.

The last game was fun - both women really going for it and not holding back. Pavs impressed me - from what I read and what the commentators were saying she was simply too good for Fran for the first set and a half. She let her foot off the accelerator and Fran stormed back, then almost blew it but righted the ship. Full credit to Franny for being aggressive and not giving up. She earned it. A good match for SEWTA - they got a standing ovation from the stadium which was more or less full.

ESPN3 is US-only but someone at TF hooked me up with a livesteam. CAKE. The commentators are assholes though - completely ripping apart all the players. Just called Sharapova OCD. Probably what I'd do, though.

Ugh. Cake. A Cake-Shriek (either Masha or Azza) would suck soooo much.
Cake's robotic technique is off-putting. No variation in setup, no room for improvisation, just trying to replicate everything down to last twitch exactly point after point. Like watching a wannabe automaton.

Post by Grarliner on May 31, 2011 12:01:32 GMT -5
I prefer Murray in the next round to Troicki so I'm happy with that result. Even if it's kinda pathetic all around. Now maybe Murray can completely fuck the dog in 2011 with a loss to Chela? I don't quite take the Hurley position on Troicki but I do think this will brand him with the capital C in the locker room. Better believe top players in the future will be looking for the choke if they find themselves behind. Fed is playing pretty good, although he just dropped serve and Monfils has won three straight games. Gael was annoying me by not even trying to get back into the court to play the next shot on one point, which albeit was a pretty easy backhand for Fed. Roger sort of looked at him askance, though, I thought, once he dispatched the shot. But he is still trying, evidently, as witnessed by his comeback here in the third. There seems to be one problem for Monfils v. Fed which is that he doesn't seem to have enough power to pound Rog's backhand. Actually, I'm sure he does, but his rally groundstroke doesn't have enough on it to prevent Roger from running around the BH.

SEWTA is crap, but this is Kuzzy who isn't playing Ree so won't make a million errors and hand it over. But yes I agree, Cake isn't prone to choking from what I recall - but I'm still nervous. I really want her to win.

Schiavone's win is precisely the script I would write were I able to. This has been a great title defense even if it goes no further, and yes, reminiscent of Costa in 2003.
But she DOES have a chance to go further. Bartoli looks set to book place in the semis ... I'm not even sure if Marion will be the crowd favorite in that semi.
Oops, Sveta broke back.
