Why Benneteau? Some FTF deal?
By the way, wouldn't it be something if tennis challenged its own prevailing logic and simply wild-carded the most promising players who are not ranked high enough regardless of nationality?

Why Benneteau? Some FTF deal? Yes. Wimbledon has been fairly good about that recently.

I'm a little unnerved that Wimbledon would do something progressive. It can't be that simple. Are you sure it's not because every player in Britain absolutely sucks?

I'm not making any sort of judgment on WHY they do it and others don't. They just do.

Well, anyhow, I think it's a good idea. Have the best tennis tournament possible and let's quit favoring people who happen to be born in (or emigrate to) countries that host a Grand Slam. I think it's a gross old nationalistic idea in a modern, global game.

Yes, I can see why other events need local WCs, but no Slam needs to rely on bumpkins to sell tickets or get publicity. A token couple should suffice. I'd be in favour of rigorous and specific WC qualification criteria for Slams, reward players who've accomplished stuff, just because Slam WCs are such a big deal. In that sense I actually like that the USO reserves WCs for the U18s winner etc.

They are a big deal. Think of how far even a first round loss would go to padding the pocketbook of someone ranked #200.

Wimbly WCs are the only reason someone like Barry Cowan even has a career.

Not bad choices for the women's MDWCs. Here are the women's qWCs with the USTA's alleged reasons for choosing them, MOST of which make sense: 2011 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion Ashleigh Barty (15, Ipswich, Australia) 2008 Orange Bowl champion Julia Boserup (19, Newport Beach, Calif.) 2010 US Open girls’ singles champion Daria Gavrilova (17, Moscow, Russia) Two-time USTA Girls’ 18s finalist Nicole Gibbs (18, Santa Monica, Calif.), a rising sophomore at Stanford 2010 Easter Bowl champion Krista Hardebeck (16, Santa Ana, Calif.) Madison Keys (16, Boca Raton, Fla.), who won her first professional title on the USTA Pro Circuit in June 2010 Jessica Pegula (17, Boca Raton, Fla.), who reached her first professional final on the USTA Pro Circuit in January Taylor Townsend (15, Stockbridge. Ga.), who reached the semifinals ( ) at last week’s USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships.

Davis won, she gets a MDWC, Gibbs was the finalist, she gets a QWC, so Townsend is next in line And Boserup has been an...okay player on Tour, that's just her biggest career achievement for the press release, I guess.

Okay, but who was the 4th semifinalist, and what happened to her? Maybe she's already in qualies?

Anyway there's only one player there who's over 18, so that's great. I'm excited when they find promising 15-17-year-olds to give this plum to. Let's see what they can do.

Okay, but who was the 4th semifinalist, and what happened to her? Maybe she's already in qualies? Perhaps, or she's less promising, or her daddy's not as rich. I mean, they can't ALL get wild cards. This also could have been Stevenson.

The other semifinalist was Hardebeck, already in the qualies. I can't believe I actually looked that up.

The other semifinalist was Hardebeck, already in the qualies. I can't believe I actually looked that up. Thanks! I am not thrilled with Gibbs. She lost to the one and only Julia Cohen today in that WC playoff in Hurleyville. She should be forced to forfeit her QWC for that. There have to be some standards, after all!

Wait. Gibbs won the first set of that match 6-0 yesterday. GROSS.
If Cohen gets a WC because of that watered-down field...oy vey. Maybe I will go just to heckle her.
It's also supposed to thunderstorm all weekend. Heh.

Can't disagree with those WCs. Even Townsend has had good results when she's played. Somewhat surprised with no Tracy Capra though, even though she died after last year.

Somewhat surprised with no Tracy Capra though, even though she died after last year. She's playing in the WC playoff. I guess she won it last year? “Whenever I earn something and am not just given a wild card, I always do better because I know I deserve to be there,” said Capra, who is bound for Duke this fall.
