Post by DBBN on Sept 10, 2011 13:49:10 GMT -5
I can't really figure out how I'd rank them actually. I've always cheered according to whoever needs the win more rather than any real preference. And my ambivalence about liking Murray's game but not the media bullshit. I thought that me sort of actually rooting IN FAVOR of Federer today was because (1) Nole has won two Slams this year already and, (2) no matter what, Federer isn't going to stomp on Nadal's Slam-winning capacity anymore, even if he does beat him occasionally. I still am not positive it's really related to the obvious fact that Nole will beat Rafa in the final here, were they to play, but maybe I'm being naive. Also my opinion of Federer is partially affected by how good he looks in his outfits, and he looks pretty hot in his summer hardcourt '11 gear.

I don't dislike any of them either anymore. There was a period after that AO final, when I couldn't stand Roger at all (and I actually started my tennis watching experience by being a Federer fan, it was a time when he was a choker).
I root for them with Nadal factor in mind and taking into account who needs a win the most. Only Andy disappointed me greatly by completely sucking in all his finals.
Meanwhile Roger gave the break back yo Novak, but it is 0-40 on Novak's serve.

I guess what's most surprising is that I thought Rafa and Nole were roughly tied for me, and perhaps for a while they were, but they totally aren't today. And, again, I think that's because Nole has had such a good year and Rafa did not.

I can't see myself ever actively cheering for Fed again, now he has his 16, even though I technically like him most. What's the point? To a lesser extent, that's true of Nadal as well. He has his Full House and I can't be arsed cheering anyone on to 16 or 17 again. I'm basically done with Fedal, I want more Nole Slams and...any Muzza Slams.

I guess Rafa and Rog need this Slam more *this year*. But they have 16 and 10 respectively to Nole's three (and Murray's zero, lulz), so it's obvious who actually needs it more.

I think if I remove who "needs the result more" and my notoriously inconsistent sexual desires, I like/admire/respect Nadal as a person the most, based upon what he says, how he acts, and his general character (obviously most of which is simply what we are permitted to see, by any of their handlers). So I guess when everything else is wavering, that's what's going to be the overriding factor at the end of the day.

Which is not the kind of fandom I used to have regarding Sampras and Henin. I could've cared less if they had won 40 Slams, I'd have rooted for them to the end. I'm fine with all of them, I end up not caring who wins and I'm bored by the matches, even if they are really high quality. Now I don't have anyone like that, and it looks like none of us does. I do. Rafa is still like that to me. The little difference is I'm a bit older now, so I'm not upset after his losses for ages like I was with Justine's, especially at Wimbledon. And the fact that I don't actively dislike Rafa's opponents as I did Justine's.

Rafa's diva tendencies always get overlooked in favour of the "down-to-earth country boy" persona/narrative too. His OCD stuff and time-wasting before serve probably irk me most, and I'm not a fan of his camp at all.
With Murray, obviously the media bullshit. I like his persona though, he's not pleasant but he keeps it real.
Fed, it's not the diva-ness or the arrogance that grate but the sulky entitlement when things aren't going his way.
Djokovic, the fucking ball bouncing is doing my head in right now. JUST BLOODY SERVE.
As Leena said, I just have to respect their talent though. That means I want to see each getting his due in terms of career accomplishments...which is where my method of cheering stems from.
