Weird. So the new elite are Azza, Kvit and...? Maria's weird, her game's taken a step backwards from her heyday but she keeps getting to these big finals.

The WTA read my mind or something and compiled their own first-time Slam finalist stats! It's quite good, too. Apparently first-time finalists are at 35.5% in the Open Era. I don't think that includes yesterday's match, though.
Azarenka deserves it. Yesterday's match was exactly like the Miami final except without Maria making a bit of a run at the end. Vika is the wrong opponent for Maria. She's too solid and she comes to play with a good gameplan. It was interesting that she didn't always try to move Maria. She would for a bit, and then she'd hit the ball down the middle. It often led to a Maria error as Maria had trouble getting out of her own way in time.
#1 has a Slam!

That last post has a high Maria to other words ratio.
Azza/Kim was a really hard match to watch. Turbo grinding works but is pretty boring. It's like watching baseliners from the wooden racquet era, except without much change in pace or spin.

Poor Ali! First Andy getting so close, and now this. But at least you got to see Martina Hingis in the trophy ceremony, right? If not, there are pics waiting for you at Teen Forum. Hingis looked stunning. Quite possibly the hottest she's ever looked. Clearly the best part of the tournament. Also not too sad about Masha losing because it was totally expected. But a good tourney overall with Stosur,Silliams etc losing as well as Caro's joke reign coming to an end.
