LOL @ "Runner up....Maria Sharapova!" ;D I thought the botched trophy presentations were reserved for the US Open.

Well, "hard" might not be the right word. But from what I can remember, there's was a lot of sarcasm in the replies to his posts. It seemed to go completely over his head most of the time. I'd say his sarcasm detector was broken but I'm not sure he had one to begin with.

Accidentally watched a couple of points midway through, they were good, did not want to see the end though. Soooooo this takes Maria above the 3xSlam winners, obviously - Wade, Davenport, Capriati. Well, she was already above Capriati, certainly. And she leapfrogs all the 4xSlam winners - ASV, Clijsters, Mandlikova - none of whom got the Career Slam. There'd certainly be an argument that Sharapova's Career Slam trumps Hingis's extra Slam, though I think Hingis might win that back due to the extent of her dominance in her prime. I anticipate many many battles between those fanbases in the near future. Justine and Venus never got the Career Slam but I think 7 is still too far ahead of 4 for that to be an argument. When/if Sharapova gets to 6, then we can talk. I'm not a fan of "weak era" or "weak opponents" arguments so I can't really make one about this clay era You beat who's in front of you.

Although, Maria has become a bit more tolerable since the media still doesn't care about SEWTA with her winning. If she'd only not have started the screaming trend.

For now Hingis > Sharapova, but if she gets that 5th Slam she's on top of Hingis. If she wins a 6th Slam, she's ahead of Venus and the Belgian elf. She'd need 8 Slams to get ahead of Monica and that'd be really pushing it! Yeah, you're right. He was just so annoying! Now Ali has become the new cat. I'm not a fan of "weak era" or "weak opponents" arguments so I can't really make one about this clay era You beat who's in front of you. I agree with that, but still... When you look back to those failed to complete the Career Slam and those who blocked them, it's really tempting to think what would happen if Justine, Monica, Venus and Martina played a Sara Errani in the final of the Slam(s) that got away.

Just compare the calibre of grass court players during Justine's prime to the calibre of clay players now, really. THE WILLIAMSES versus ERRANI AND SCHIAVONE.
Even that doesn't really wash though, Justine had multiple opportunities to win Wimbledon and couldn't take them.

(Not even the obvious 2006 - Mauresmo just outplayed her in the final - but 2005, when Serena was fat and Venus four years removed from her last Slam, and then...Daniilidou in 1R, really? Terrible. 2007 was the one that got away though. Justine's game was good enough to come through.)

Hingis played Majoli in 1997, and served for the match in 1999. You can take her off that list. The only reason she lost that other one was that she played Graf. Had she played anyone else, there wouldn't have been controversies and choking - certainly not had she played Barbara Schwartz (let's pretend she's the Errani of 1999) in the final. But of course, you can only beat those who play. For some players, it's just destined (not) to happen.

Post by lexpretend on Jun 9, 2012 12:23:33 GMT -5
As for Venus, I still feel her big-sister instincts played a subconscious part in the SERENASLAM - certainly at RG she seemed happy to see her little sister, who had a lot more to prove than she did at that point, take the title. That was a real shock given how Venus had dominated the H2H to that point. And she would probably have won the AO '02 if she hadn't been careless against Seles, who she also dominated in the H2H.
I think '98 was probably Martina's biggest missed chance at RG. '97 she was coming off injury, '99...she never mastered Steffi anyway. That was hardly PEAK PIERCE in '98.

I said some terrible things to the cat. If you're reading this cat, I'm sorry.
As for the other almosts, Monica could've won a Wimbledon if she'd played it more often in the early years and if Steffi had a freak early round loss. Justine had bad luck there but also has herself to blame. 2001, obviously too new + Venus. 2002, slump. 2003, hand injury + Serena. 2004, mono. 2005, real missed opportunity. 2006, wtf happened to her serve in that second set? she was running away with it until then and had beaten Amelie on grass the last two times they'd played. 2007, mental midgetness. 3 years of missed chances. Martina, 97 - should've done more. 98 lolwut, how'd she lose to Monica? 99 mental breakdown obv. 00, Peak Pierce? 01 lost too easily to Capriati, what happened there? 02, time for retirement obv.
