The Spanish papers tend to do without the ceremonial final last name, although I see they left in the Lorenzo!

I think Hingis was being a little disingenuous when she said her exo match with AK was going to be "a good test" for her. She should have signed for an exo with local player Bruna Colosio instead; she'd have gotten a better workout at least!

Serena beaten but Davenport on song in Hong Kong
World number one Lindsay Davenport cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nicole Vaidisova but Serena Williams crashed to a heavy defeat less than two weeks before she opens her Australian Open title defence.
Interesting choice of adjective...
The vastly experienced Davenport made a confident start to her 2006 campaign at the eight-player Champions Challenge invitational, breaking the 16-year-old Czech in the third and seventh games before serving out the first set.
Davenport, 29, who will be hoping to add to her three Grand Slam titles in Melbourne, produced a carbon-copy second set against the 15th-ranked Vaidisova, breaking for 2-1 and 5-2 before serving out the match to love.
She will play the winner of Thursday's match between Wimbledon champion Venus Williams and Indian sensation Sania Mirza in the semi-finals on Friday.
"That's a pretty good way to start off the year," said Davenport. "I felt I was hitting the ball well and got used to playing points pretty quickly.
"Of course there's always stuff you can do better but I'm ecstatic I could play such a good match against such a good opponent."
But it was a different story for Williams, whose preparations to defend her Australian Open crown were dealt a heavy blow by her 6-3, 6-1 defeat to Elena Dementieva.
The seven-time Grand Slam winner, who had not played since an embarrassing first-round defeat at the China Open in September, was broken in the third game before capitulating in less than an hour in the tournament opener.
It was the first time Williams, 24, had been beaten by the Russian world number eight in five meetings and she will need a massive improvement if she is to defend her title in Melbourne in less than two weeks.
"I've never beaten her before so when I went on court I was trying to play my game, be aggressive and just focus on my serve," said Dementieva.
"When you play against such a good player as her you really want to play your best game, otherwise you're going to lose.
"She's a great fighter and when you play against her you really want to play till the end and be focused on each point. You never know what she's going to do next."
However the defending champion was picking off her rival with ease by the end of the match as Williams, showing every day of her three-month lay-off, failed to find her rhythm in an error-strewn performance.
Williams double-faulted to go 2-1 down in the first set and was broken again for 4-1. Dementieva double-faulted to give the 11th-ranked American hope at 5-3 before finding a deep forehand to wrap up the set 6-3 after 21 minutes.
Williams held her first game of the second set but soon found herself 4-1 down before double-faulting again to leave the Russian serving for the match.
Dementieva fired a backhand pass to convert her first match point at 40-15 and wrap up proceedings after just 57 minutes.
Williams' lacklustre display is likely to give ammunition to her critics who say she has lost focus after winning every honour in the game and amassing 16 million dollars in prize money.
Despite winning the Australian Open she had a disappointing 2005, suffering from a recurring ankle problem before what she called the worst defeat of her career against China's Sun Tiantian in Beijing.
Four of the world's top 10 are appearing at the Champions Challenge. Second-ranked Kim Clijsters will play China's Zheng Jie in Thursday's other match.

Any more scores...Lindsay beat Nicole, I know...how did SW do in her consolation round? Clijsters/Mirza def. Williamses 8-7 (7/2) ;D Villiams beat Mirza 3 & 3 and had a mystery injury according to this report: The five-time Grand Slam winner was struggling at a break down in the first set before leaving the court for 11 minutes of treatment to her left hip. But Williams, who had not played since pulling out of the China Open in September with a knee injury, broke the teenager three times in a row on her return. It was a cruel turn of events for Mirza, 19, who had capitalised on some erratic serving to break Williams in the first game at the exhibition tournament. But with the Indian 3-2 up and eyeing a one-set lead, Williams called for the trainer and disappeared off court clutching a handbag. Rejuvenated by her break, Williams immediately broke twice before serving out at 6-3.

Zheng Jie pulls out of Australian Open warm-up due to injury (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-01-07 21:02 Chinese sensation Zheng Jie pulled out of her exhibition match Saturday due to a left-knee injury, which shadowed her plan to play in the upcoming Australian Open. Zheng fell during her match against emerging Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova at the Champions Challenge, hurting her already bandaged left knee. The China National Games champion said she would seek immediate treatment but was unsure whether she could recover in time to compete in the Australian Open starting in nine days. "I will have to go back to the mainland for treatment. I will see a doctor in Hong Kong first but I am hoping to play in both the singles and doubles of the Australian Open," she said.

(AP)
Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 7-5 Saturday and clinch the Champions Challenge exhibition title in a warmup for the Australian Open.
Clijsters rallied from behind in both sets. She served two double faults in her opening game to give Davenport the break then fought back from 2-3 down thanks to four straight errors by the American.
Clijsters took advantage of more Davenport mistakes and held on to take the set.
Davenport held the first game of the second set after three deuces, but the next four games were breaks. Clijsters held to even it at 3-3, but lost her next service game to again fall behind 3-5.
The Belgian broke in the next game on a Davenport double fault, then recovered to 5-5. Clijsters went on to break again and serve successfully for the match.
Clijsters said she had trouble finding a rhythm initially because of Davenport's inconsistency.
"She was going through patches where she would make a few mistakes and then she would hit some unbelievable shots," she said.
Davenport seemed in good shape going into the final, but appeared to have trouble moving Saturday.
Clijsters next plays at next week's Sydney International.
Davenport, who earlier this week said she plans to play a lighter schedule this year, will not contest any more events before the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 16 in Melbourne.

World TeamTennis starts tonight. They've added Live Scoring to their web site. I know WTT is ridiculous, but it's kind of cool to see the live scoring; Kutuzova & Pratty are squaring off right now, and Chanda Rubin is set to play tonight as well. wtt.ids-sports.com/index.html

What's Chanda doing playing this shit.
If her knee or whatever is always hurt, why waste your career on this.

Maybe she wants to see if it's ready to play tennis yet. She beat good old Ahsha Rolle in their singles set. Meaningless, yes, but still better than losing.

Chanda played WTT 2 days in a row -- i'll take any tiny glimmer of good news at this point. But last night she lost to Angie Haynes. btw I didn't realize she had ANKLE SURGERY last year! This poor kid with her body!

Chanda is more like a geezer than a kid. Her 16-14 win over Arantxa seems like forever ago. It's really a shame with Chanda... injuries ruined what should have been a much better career.

Chanda's just a kid to true geezers like me. Angie Haynes is off to a great start in WTT. So I think I'll actually follow a team this year, Angie's team, the Delaware Smash. It would be great if she could transfer this exo success to the Tour this summer. The clock is ticking, Angela!

Chanda lost to HARKLEROAD last night. Of course this was just one of those freak WTT sets with their oddball scoring, but still. Maybe she's not quite ready for a return.
