If Paula Kania is seeded to qualify, you're doing it wrong.

Mirjana will win 1 or 2 games in the first set then hit every ball 25 feet out.

Better than Kuala Lumpur main draw. Makes more sense as a hard-court warm-up for IW (though apparently the connecting flights mean it takes just as long to travel to IW from here as from KL). Interesting draw, anyway. Wonder if their friendly draws can help Beck and Shvedova out of their slumps.

I think Martic is coming back from injury - I read something about how she was going to pull out of the AO but presumably flew down there to pick up her 1R cheque. Anyway, I put money on her losing here Weirdly, only one WTA MD debutante among those LOLifiers - Adriana Perez, the first VEN in a WTA draw since...Sequera? Vento-Kabchi? Can't remember which of those retired first. Beatriz Haddad Maia is meant to be a decent prospect, I believe. Let's see what she can do with about as easy a 1R as she could have hoped for.

Boy, you've been betting a lot. I don't think I'm going to become a freelance writer after all. Did you drive Marino away?
Chieh-Yu Hsu has played a Tour event!??!?!?!?!?!

Yes, that stuck in the mind because 1) it was such a random-ass WC, 2) IIRC Akgul was just on the verge of breaking the top 100 at the time, and getting such a lucky break in that 1R match helped her on her way.
Thing with freelancing is that it leaves you TIME to bet, look up H2Hs etc. Also, wta96.com is so goddamn quick and easy to use, is there an ATP equivalent? I hate both official sites.
I was surprised Irigoyen had played a WTA event, but never underestimate how many random Latina ITF scrubs get to grace WTA MDs thanks to all the tournaments like...this one.

Also, TF confirms that Martic actually had knee surgery the day after she lost 1R at the AO

Who would have thought that Venus and Mirjana would play a WTA match 11 years after their infamous double bagel at the US Open. God, I'm old.

God, and THAT match was a "can you believe they're finally playing half a decade after they broke through" moment, too.

Beatriz Haddad Maia is meant to be a decent prospect, I believe. Let's see what she can do with about as easy a 1R as she could have hoped for. An easy win, but then she blew three MPs to lose to Czink in R2, 61 26 67 Two separate BRA players winning WTA matches in successive weeks Babos reaches her first WTA QF since she won Monterrey last year - she's well out of the top 100 now but maybe she can start rebuilding her career. She's still ranked ahead of poor Caroline Garcia though, who'd love to have come close to the top 100 ever. Garcia got a jackpot R1 but couldn't handle Olga Puchkova (who, TBH, is also a jackpot) in R2

The White Mug played very well against Venus - I watched the first two sets - but ultimately fell. She hasn't really made the progress we expected after Miami last year, a nice reminder that she has skills.
QFs - quite a nice line-up:
(1) Venus WILLIAMS (USA) vs. (5) Magdalena RYBARIKOVA (SVK) Olga PUCHKOVA (RUS) vs. Jana CEPELOVA (SVK) Monica NICULESCU (ROU) vs. Timea BABOS (HUN) (7) Kristina MLADENOVIC (FRA) vs. Melinda CZINK (HUN)

Vee lost to Poochie?! Jeez. Sad I don't think Venus traveled all the way down there just to see Brazil, win a match or two, and then lose to the likes of La Pooch. It's always difficult to watch athletes in the late stages of decline, but this one is especially hard (for me). It's not just her illness, it's her head now, too, and that's just very painful to see. Maybe Vee will turn out to be like Elbo, hanging on, and on and on and on and on, just because they love playing tennis, even when they're shadows of their former selves. But I hope not. I hope she'll find something else she loves to do just as much and go do that, and have a great life.

Before I even realized she made the final here I was going to post regarding Lex's earlier comment about Puchkova - remember when she was a touted prospect, oh, seven years ago?
Oh and the WTA has an article about it. I apologize if this is old news but ...
Puchkova says that after her 2006 breakthrough season and subsequent career high ranking of #32 the next year, everything fell apart as her Dad/coach got cancer! Apparently Daddy recovered though, which is nice.
And now she will play for the title after her biggest win in half a decade or so. Maybe ever.

I wonder whether she might have one or two more big moments, though. I doubt she'll ever win anything big anymore but I could see her beating someone in the top ten in a Slam or something.

Vee still has the first serve and power in her strokes to make the occasional run, but she's done and she knows it. I'm really surprised she's still playing stuff like this. I guess all that blather about the Williams' having such incredible lives outside of tennis was nonsense. So shocking.

Another outdoor tournament in the tropics, another rain-ravaged event. Why is the WTA so intensely stupid? There's not much left since US and Euro indoor events don't want to bother with SEWTA.
