I saw the second set of Lindsay vs Sugiyama. She played with confidence (although muttered to much to herself to my liking) and control the match. When she was interviewed by Mary Joe afterward and discussed about potential final with Kim, I was so dismayed that she didn't sound confident that she could beat her at all.

Lindsay Lindsay 6-4 6-2 over Dementieva! What a match for Lindsay! The courtside temperature is inhuman. I kept worrying that Lindsay would fall apart under the heat but she didn't (she said she never swept in a match like this before). She missed some easy returns (especially those 2nd serves from Dementieva that even I would know where the balls went. She was frustrated but kept her positive attitude, not getting down on herself. With Venus out, the prospect of Lindsay winning USO gets a tiny notch higher! GO LINDSAY at final! This is her 4th consecutive finals in Pilot Pen and she lost her last 3 to Venus. Lindsay, now it's time to win your 2nd title of the year.

In a Blink, Davenport Sinks Czink by Joe Checkler Friday, August 29, 2003
The 15-minute, 6-0, first set said it all. Lindsay Davenport wasn't going to let Melinda Czink even think of an upset. Winning 26 of the set's 33 points, Davenport rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win, advancing to the fourth round of the 2003 US Open Friday.
Czink looked nervous from the start, as she never sat down after practice and walked straight to the service line. Amazingly, Davenport's all-out power attack on the Hungarian led to a 5-0 lead just 10 minutes into the match. With her serve in the high 90s to Czink's high 80s, Davenport played about as perfect a match and had about as easy a time as she could have hoped, especially considering the lingering nerve problem in her foot.
That Czink was coming off back-to-back impressive wins over Clarisa Fernandez and Lisa Raymond didn't fluster the No. 2 seed Davenport, who constantly wrong-footed the lefty Czink with blistering forehands and backhands. Many Arthur Ashe Stadium fans were already wondering aloud about how the next match, one pitting local favorite James Blake against Armenian Sargis Sargsian, would go.
Davenport, whose foot injury last week forced her to retire from a match against Jennifer Capriati, has now won three straight two-setters. Her fourth-round opponent will be Russia's Nadia Petrova, who easily defeated Amanda Coetzer Friday.
Davenport served out the second set at love, as the match finished in 42 minutes. Her serve was never broken, although Czink did have two break opportunities. Davenport, on the other hand, converted 5-of-7 break chances. from: usopen.org

Good news that Lindsay may still play after her surgery!
from usopen.org
Q. You may be tired of being asked this question, but what are your plans for your career after your foot is taken care of?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, I have no idea. My immediate concern is obviously here. I'm going to then meet with some doctors the week after The Open to see when to do it.
But the fact of the matter is, if I want to play next year, if I want to play at a high level, I almost have to get this taken care of immediately. The last few months, I haven't been able to make it over 90 minutes in practice. If I want to play next year and do well, it's something I need to take care of.
I'm going to probably most likely take care of my foot right away and enable me to come back and get ready for Australia.
No idea. I'm going to probably play it a lot more by ear next year than I ever have.

Davenport pulls out of Swiss event with foot injury 2003-10-11 15:22:37 GMT (Reuters) ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct 11 (Reuters) - American Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from next week's Swisscom Challenge because of a foot injury, organisers said on Saturday. "Her foot is painful and she did not want to play with the injury," event spokesman Andre Glauser told Reuters. "She did not feel well playing in the quarter-final in Filderstadt and called late on Friday evening to say she will not play. She is now going back to America." Davenport, who requires surgery on a swollen nerve in her left foot, struggled to a straight-sets quarter-final defeat to Russian Elena Bovina in Filderstadt, Germany, on Friday. Davenport, a finalist at the Swisscom Challenge last year, was due to be the third seed for the Zurich tournament which begins on Monday. Take care Lindsay

NEW YORK (AP) -- Three-time major champion Lindsay Davenport had surgery on her left foot Wednesday in Los Angeles and will miss the rest of the season, including the WTA Championships.
The operation removed a small nerve that was bothering her between two toes, according to her agent, Tony Godsick.
"It was a difficult decision to have the surgery at this time, because it means missing the Championships, where the best compete against the best," Davenport said. "But I'm really looking forward to getting back onto the court and being ready for the start of next season."
The nerve had been hampering the former No. 1-ranked player since the spring.
It forced her to pull out of her fourth-round match at the French Open and the final of a hard-court tournament in New Haven, Conn., just before the U.S. Open. Davenport then had a cortisone shot to numb the pain, and although she never looked completely comfortable, she reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open.
"The fact of the matter is, if I want to play next year, if I want to play at a high level, I almost have to have this taken care of immediately," Davenport said during the year's last Grand Slam.
"The last few months, I haven't been able to make it over 90 minutes in practice. If I want to play next year and do well, it's something I need to take care of."
She didn't play a competitive match from the U.S. Open until last week's indoor tournament in Filderstadt, Germany. Davenport wanted to test the injury there, and she lost to Elena Bovina in the quarterfinals.
Davenport is expected to be sidelined until December, when she should be able to return to practice, Godsick said. She plans to return to WTA Tour action in time for the Australian Open in January.
Davenport currently is ranked No. 4. She won one title in 2003, at Tokyo in February, reached five other finals and ends the season with $1,293,743 in prize money.
The American finished 1998 and 2001 atop the computer rankings, and her 37 career singles titles include the 1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon and 2000 Australian Open.
She missed the first half of 2002 because of right knee surgery.

Davenport plans to return in January November 4, 2003 SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- Lindsay Davenport is ahead of schedule in her recovery from foot surgery and plans to return to the WTA Tour in January. Davenport had a small nerve between two toes in her left foot removed Oct. 15. ``I can walk and I don't feel any pain,'' she said while attending a charity event Monday night. The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, begins Jan. 19. Davenport, ranked fourth, will miss this week's season-ending WTA Championships in Los Angeles. She hasn't played since last month, when she lost in the quarterfinals in Filderstadt, Germany, while testing the injury before having surgery. She plans to resume hitting the first week of December, and hopes to be practicing at full strength by Christmas. ``I'm pretty confident that I'll be fine,'' she said. Davenport plans to play a warmup event in Sydney beginning Jan. 12. Updated on Tuesday, Nov 4, 2003 8:13 pm EST

www.sportsmediainc.com/tennisweek/index.cfm?func=showarticle&newsid=9854&bannerregion=My Left Foot (Feels Better): Davenport Sets Sights On January ReturnBy Adrianna Outlaw 11/05/2003 Less than three weeks after undergoing surgery on her left foot, Lindsay Davenport is optimistic she will put her best foot forward and return to the practice court next month. The fourth-ranked American, who spent much of the season suffering from a chronic nerve condition called neuroma, underwent surgery to remove a small nerve between two toes in her left foot on October 15th. Appearing in Santa Monica at the annual WTA Tour Charities Gala and Fashion Show, Davenport told the media she is pleased with the progress she's made since her surgery and plans to return to practice sometime in the first week of December. "I can walk and I don't feel any pain," Davenport told the Associated Press. "I'm pretty confident that I'll be fine." The 2000 Australian Open champion has set her sights on returning to tournament tennis at the adidas International in Sydney, which is a popular tune-up for the Australian Open. The Laguna Beach, California resident married Jonathan Leach before Roland Garros leading to speculation she would soon retire to start a family. And while Davenport, who loves children and often speaks of her desire to start a family, has contemplated life after her tennis career concludes she said she's not ready to call it quits quite yet. "Obviously, I think about the second phase of my life and what I would do," Davenport said. "But I'm certainly not ready to throw in the towel yet. My life is still 100 percent focused on tennis and practicing and playing these tournaments. I've never been a fan farewell tours or 'this is my last year or last tournament.' I think you make that decision when it hits you, after you're away from the game a little bit."

Doesn't she? I saw a thumbnail of another pic of her from the gala, and she was looking over her shoulder and smiling, so her hair was hanging down on the other shoulder. It looked great I can't imagine her playing with a ponytail, tho

Yes, I saw her at the WTA Championships talking with Pam Shriver and also attending that #1's ceremony and I thought she looked great with her long hair. It really suits her well.
But, I agree, it would be strange to see her play with a ponytail. She'll prolly cut it short again before the season begins.

Open-Angry Davenport plays down Open chances 2004-01-23 08:13:10 GMT (Reuters)
By Alastair Himmer
MELBOURNE, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Lindsay Davenport thrashed fellow American Laura Granville 6-4 6-0 to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday -- then wrote off her title chances.
The fifth seed, Melbourne champion four years ago, was disgusted with herself after having to battle back from 4-1 and 0-40 down in the first set, claiming afterwards that she was "under the radar."
"I made a ton of unforced errors in the first four to five games. It just felt like I didn't have the right energy going out there," said a philosophical Davenport.
"I definitely should be a little bit under the radar but for a good reason. Right now, I haven't won a slam in four years."
Davenport has three grand slam titles to her name, her last coming at the Australian Open in 2000.
"Justine (Henin-Hardenne) and Kim (Clijsters) have proven over the last 12 months -- same with Venus (Williams) -- they're really contending for these titles," said the 27-year-old Californian.
"I'm going to have to do something that I haven't done in the last year or two to be able to, you know, be in the top two or three contenders.
"I just haven't been able to do that the last 12 to 18 months."
Davenport, who withdrew from the Sydney warm-up event with a sore shoulder last week, struggled with her serve.
However, she still had too much power for her 54th-ranked opponent, closing out proceedings in 66 minutes.
She was still fuming as she walked off court following her sluggish start.
"It just felt like I got off to a really slow start," said Davenport, who will play 11th-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva for a place in the quarter-finals.
"I can't afford to keep going through patches like that."

Any word on Lindsay's knee acting up again? I hope it doesn't hinder her chances at Wimbledon. I'd like to see her reach the semis in London, if healthy. It will be difficult - more like impossible - for her, or anyone else, to beat the Williams on grass.

Lindsay Hope you enjoy your marry/merry life after retirement Davenport saying farewell to Wimbledon -- probably By JOHN PYE, AP Sports Writer July 2, 2004 WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Lindsay Davenport is not quite done at Wimbledon. She still has mixed doubles to play. But the 1999 champion's singles career at the All England Club probably is over. Davenport, who plans to retire at the end of the year, lost in the semifinals Thursday to 17-year-old Maria Sharapova. ``I feel pretty confident that this is probably my last Wimbledon,'' the 28-year-old Davenport said. ``At a certain point you kind of lose the excitement and the drive, and I feel that has been a little bit missing the past few months.'' Davenport won the first set and led 3-1 in the second but lost to Sharapova 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Sharapova will play two-time defending champion Serena Williams in Saturday's final. ``It was a tough loss out there, but I lost to someone who rose to the challenge,'' Davenport said. ``I don't feel like I gave the match away at all.'' After losing to Sharapova, Davenport teamed with Bob Bryan to reach the semifinals of mixed doubles by beating top-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Likhovtseva 6-2, 6-4. Davenport wants to play in the U.S. Open and plans to retire after the season-ending WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles. She beat Steffi Graf in the 1999 Wimbledon final. She also won the 1998 U.S. Open, the 2000 Australian Open, and collected a gold medal in singles in the 1996 Olympics. Davenport played her first Grand Slam match in 1991 -- when Sharapova was 4. ``I just don't feel the same kind of excitement sometimes before matches,'' Davenport said. ``The wins don't get me as excited anymore and, on the flip side, the losses don't hurt as much.'' Still, the loss against Sharapova hurt. ``Of course it does, but I feel like she totally played her way to win the match,'' Davenport said. ``I had control of the match and she took it from me. When I started to have a chance here or there, she'd always come up with great shots. ``It's a little bittersweet to walk off a court and a venue where I've had some great victories and great moments in my career.'' Davenport said the high point of her career was her win over Graf in the final. ``For whatever reason, never felt nervous, never got broken, just played a great match,'' she said. ``To beat her of all players in the final, is pretty remarkable.'' Following retirement, Davenport wants to enjoy life with husband Jon Leach by ``not traveling.'' But the rewards of life on the road have been considerable, she said. ``If someone had told me when I was little I would win Wimbledon one day, I would have never believed them,'' Davenport said.

She's very determined and I have no doubt she will retire after USO this year.
Q. As you walked off the court, what were you thinking about the times you've had here and whether you'll be back?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, I've had great memories out there. You know, it was a tough loss to take, but I lost to someone who rose to the challenge today. I don't feel like I gave the match away at all.
But it's a little bittersweet to finally walk off a court and a venue where I've had some great victories and some great moments in my career.
Q. When do you think you'll arrive at a decision about whether that career will continue here?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I'd be surprised if I was back.
Q. If this is your last match, how do you want these people to remember you here?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't know. I don't worry about that kind of stuff. I felt like this is a tournament I struggled at for a few years, wasn't really sure of the grass, and grew to really love and enjoy playing here ‑ much more so than a lot of the other Grand Slams. Always felt really comfortable when I've come here.
But as far as the crowd, I don't know. I've never really worried about that kind of stuff.
Q. Can you explain a bit more about your reasons for your being surprised if you were to come back here to Wimbledon?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I just feel like I've had, you know, an amazing career, a very long one. You know, just don't feel the same kind of excitement sometimes before matches. The wins don't get me as excited any more. On the flipside, the losses don't hurt as much, but I think that's part of loving to be out here, is to really go high and low. I just felt like I've been ‑‑ you know, it's just different now.

Davenport's got a totally new attitude now about retirement. Just like last year, she was contemplating ending her career after a tough loss to Venus after Wimbledon, but was re-inspired when she hit the Californian summer hard court season. The same has happened this year: after hints of retirement after losing in 3 to Sharapova, she is now hopeful again that she can continue on tour as a major factor. Obviously the wins over Venus and Serena in back-to-back finals have boosted her confidence considerably. She admitted that the 7-6 in the third thriller over Vee was the real big one, not just because it was over someone she hadn't beaten in 4 years, but because it was in 3, long, well-played sets. She proved her mental strength and stamina with that match. I personally feel that she wants to keep playing for at least another year and that if she can finish this season without any more serious physical problems and in good form, then she will definitely be back in 2005. But, I do worry about her knee, which she said at Wimbledon is breaking down quickly. No problems in these past two weeks on undefeated tennis, but I will definitely breathe a sigh of relief if and when she finishes this final week of the Californian tour uninjured. Please stay healthy, Linds, because you have such great chance of winning the US Open, ending the year at #1, and being a strong contender in 2004.
