The Draw: [5] Benesova vs. Silva Huh? Just a few weeks back she was whining about how she couldn't afford to travel to Australia.

If Pavlyuchenkova ends up playing Lapushchenkova in that section, I feel bad for the umpire. She/he should request permission to call them Pav and Lap.

Hopefully they'd be able to find an umpire of Slavic origin for that match! Those names are not that difficult for me to pronounce. Harkleroad is much worse, for example.

But sadly, that historical match will not take place as Lap lost to Ruutel.

Rolle lost 4 and 1 to Hwang Surprising Q1 losses for Rodina and Kvitova; the Great Arn lost in three to Hsieh; Dokic's ankle injury has healed miraculously enough for her to do what Bepa could not, ie beat Erakovic comfortably. Remember when Bardina was beating the likes of Bammer to reach WTA finals this time last year? I suspect neither does she. She's finally back but losing 3 and 1 to Kloesel is never a good sign

"Apart from Dokic, every other Australian woman in the qualifying tournament became a first round casualty." But hey, they picked up a nice little paycheck! Kvitova lost? Cravero's horrible slump continues. Welcome back, aussiestatman!

But sadly, that historical match will not take place as Lap lost to Ruutel. Bacsinszky - Pavlyuchenkova is not exactly a walk in the park either, spelling-wise.

I never know whether I should support Yuan Meng - on the one hand from what I've heard she's had to fight incredibly hard to get where she is, having never been favoured by the CTA, and is still something of an outcast; on the other hand, from what I've heard she's a Pratt/Obziler-style player, and we never need any more of those. On the third hand I have no idea why I'm expending so much thought on such a marginal player.

On the third hand I have no idea why I'm expending so much thought on such a marginal player. Because you're a true Tennis Culter. That's what we do! I don't know how I missed Little Ayumi's big win! Very exciting. Do it again, Little!

Final round of qualies:
Ekaterina Bychkova v Monica Niculescu Arina Rodionova v Angelika Bachmann Ekaterina Ivanova v Nuria Llagostera Vives Julia Schruff v Urszula Radwanska Alisa Kleybanova v Olivia Sanchez Tamarine Tanasugarn v Shuai Zhang Su-Wei Hsieh v Masa Zec-Peskiric Ayumi Morita v Marta Domachowska Timea Bacsinszky v Margit Ruutel Sandra Kloesel v Vesna Manasieva Meng Yuan v Katie O'Brien Sabine Lisicki v Anastasiya Yakimova
Lots of potential Slam debutantes there: Niculescu, Rodionova (Kid Sister I), Ivanova, U-Rad (Kid Sister II), Kleybanova, Zhang, Zec-Peskiric, Ruutel, Manasieva And Her Hair, Lisicki. All would appear to have a semi-decent shot at it.
(We have two Slam debutantes directly in the MD, I think: Cirstea (baptism of fire against Ivanovic) and Ditty (whatever the opposite of baptism of fire is against Moore).)

My hopes for the final round qualification:
- MengMeng, whom I also cheer for, also for no apparent reason. - Vesnia's hair. - Timea, maybe she can finally do something, although I doubt it. - Little Ayumi to defeat Big... forget it. - Su-Wei, eternally - Forehand Slice Girl!

Dorkic took her resounding loss as a reason to whine and sulk at great length about not getting a WC, and to call into question her loyalty to Tennis Australia (which is particularly amusing given her history). What a piece of work.

The Hair deserves Slam glory. And if The Hair can carry Manasieva around with it to the AO, even better.

What a piece of work. LOL. I guess Daddy made her say those things. *awww* And if "what goes around comes around" bit means she's going to ditch Tennis Australia, disappear for 3 months and loses to Eleonora Punzo again, I'm looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, Dokic has the social skills of a crow.
I read two Aussie articles about her comments today. One article sort of downplayed the rudest comments and emphasized the few decent ones.
The other article (written by Brinyi's long-lost twin in Australia?) left out the decent comments entirely, giving a 100% negative impression. Funny!
We'll see what happens next with her. The one good thing right now is that she's out there playing. But who knows if she'll disappear again, like she did in 2006, and like Lucic did last year?

The Hair was just up *4-3 in the final set but went to *4-5 in about 42 seconds Hsieh and Slice Forehand have qualified Marta da Pole looks to be in sterling form and could go far with a good draw...
