Murray is almost out to Tsonga... The bottom half is set up perfectly for Roddick, unfortunately. Unless Wussquet makes a run, which I'm not holding my breath on. I don't know about that. Nadal has no real challengers in his quarter besides Moya, and of course Moya would choke anyway. Nadal matches up well against Roddick, as we saw last year in Indian Wells on a similar pace hardcourt. I think Rafa is in the semis. Momo 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 Thank god, she'd have to retire if she lost to a journeywoman like Poutchek.

YES!!!!!!!! Tsonga with the upset. He really is so good looking, and so talented. So much more potential than Monfils and maybe Gasquet. I love his side-ways cap.
Murray had to lose with that hair. You know that Davydenko, Youzhny, and Gasquet should all be happy too.
Nice to see Kostanic pushing Maria so hard, I didn't expect it.

Nadal's had his knees bandaged in practice, and this lower bouncing surface should neutralize him more than anyone. If his mobility is lessened, similarly to how it was at USO, he's in trouble.

Still, I can't see anyone beating him before the QF, and I don't see Roddick beating him there either. No Piggy roasters around him. I enjoyed ESPN's discussion of tennis betting. Every now and then their coverage surprises. All in all a good first day session, and now I'm going to bed.

I remember why I hate the Australian Open now. Stupid time zones. If I was still a student I'd just go nocturnal for the fortnight, not that I have the relevant channels anyway.
Can't believe I missed Tits v Jank, sounds...dramatic, at least.

The time zones work perfect for me because play starts right after I come home from work at 5pm. 8 hours of tennis today with no announcers. It's awesome. I love it so much that I want to cry.

Melbourne is two hours up on me. So... this is almost My New USO. Except that it's not close enough to even consider going and I actually go to this job so I won't be calling in sick sometime on the weekend to sit around and watch the fourth round all day. Thankfully, I have weekends off. I can lounge around and watch this allllll day. Then go out.

a) I think many are overestimating how good Mauresmo may have been in the past, the muscularity was always overstated. I think Hingis had wider shoulders! b) Impressive win for King Kolya, yes. c) Frankie. d) A shame Jankovic won that match. e) Andy Murray. f) I should have placed a wager on Chelala losing. He has been pathetic of late. g) Carlosh.

1. Every young and upcoming player has to go through a wrenching loss to a top seed sometime, somewhere. This was Paszek's. 2. I'm surprised Errani was able to take the fight to Lindsay. She didn't come close before. 3. Best opening day for the women at a Slam ever? 4. Mauresmo's opener was weird ... God, Schnyder IS going to beat her again. 5. Poor Vera. 6. Today we celebrate Sandra Kloesel in the 2nd round. 7. Cibulkova.

Post by sasha on Jan 14, 2008 13:05:36 GMT -5
I wouldn't go that far... Jankovic/Paszek was certainly dramatic, but it was also certainly shitastic tennis. Other than the surprisingly competitive and well-played Leach match, it was the usual easy wins. The Dellacqua ending was nuts, also... but, only insane Aussies cared about that one. I'm all for Alicia getting back to the top 20. That weird ear thing she had came at such a cruel time.

Re: Poutchek, whoa. Sucks if it's true. I didn't notice her take much time off though?
I was always quite sceptical about Molik's presence in the top 10, though the ear infection was terrible timing.
Just noticed a) Olaru's terrible score against Vaidisova - I know she's lightweight but a bagel?? and b) Peer lost a set to Voracova, how in the world did that happen?

Just noticed a) Olaru's terrible score against Vaidisova - I know she's lightweight but a bagel?? Nikki V roxx0rz. Didn't catch it on ES - I don't think they showed any of it at all. Watched all the women's matches and none of the men's. Errani was top notch entertainment. Resourceful, smart, skilled - everything that's good about Italian women's tennis. Either she improved significantly or I was completely wrong about her.

I'm happy for Casey. It's her first time in the 2nd round of the AO! And she's obviously played it like 7 or 8 times. I'm watching some Molik/Kanepi on tape and impressed by Kanepi's backhand technique. But how many oversized big hitters are out there these days? Her, Gajdosova... Cavaday (although significantly weaker hitter). I guess it's not that different from the days of Myriam Casanova. But it sure would be nice to see one of them train harder and improve her fitness because the talent is totally there. Lindsay did it a decade ago, dropping about 25-30 pounds in a couple of years; she should be their inspiration.

I will admit he seemed to have a pretty hot body, but I was watching for only a few minutes while I got ready for work this morning. I taped the rest of that coverage block, will watch it someday, and get back to you then. For now, yes, a tentative to Troicki.

I'd like Troicki a lot more if he didn't totally give that 1st TB away and fade.
Rafa is just unbearable with the freaking stalling now... even between 1st and 2nd serves he's getting to around 25 seconds.
And I'm sure we'll hear more about the BRUTAL 4 HOUR match with Moya in Chennai. That was only like 3:30. And probably 2+ hours of Rafa stalling bullshit.

You have a hot bunch, I'm not going to lie. Chris Fowler was pretty close with the pronunciation, then. You know...for a meathead, Fowler usually gets the names right.
