Petrova peaked with her victory over Capriati, RG '03. That match was beautiful - but then again Capriati made a lot of matches fun in the early years of the last two decades.

Sometimes Nadia hits through the ball, sometimes she hits weak stuff. That's why she's fun!
Lleyton is going to blow out Istomin eventually, so blah.

ESPN2 showed JCF's match point, a backhand dtl winner. He looked so cute. I'm so just so much more at peace with life when his hair looks like that. Go to RLA, you idiots. Live TB action.

Istomin is ranked #216 in the world? Lol, Hewitt needs to retire pronto.

Federer is so cocky, blah blah blah. And he also needs a better sense of humor during interviews.
I almost forgot about his exho with Pete Sampras in Madison Square Garden. I might be able to go. I heard back-row tickets are like 20 bucks, so I would do it.

Nevermind, looks like cheapest ticket is 85 bucks at this point.

Juan del Potro retired? Looks like he was giving David a tough fight too. Why must one quarter of the draw have so many damn good players?? And ummm yeah, I decided I'm going to MSG to see the Fed/Sampras exho. Ticketmaster had a good deal including a one-year subscription to Men's Vogue - that must be Federer's touch because he's "in" with Vogue. And since I was recently considering flying to Cali for IW, this will be much cheaper and huge, ridiculous, loud, American spectacle. Can't wait.

Juan is a wimp.
Youzhny/Zverev vs. Bhupathi/Knowles 10-10 first set tiebreak!!!! Oooohhhhh. Go Commie/Nazi team. Fuck it, 12-10 to the dubs guys. I'm convinced it was Zverev's serve they lost the last point on.

Oooh, Venus just bitched out the chair ump and deservedly so! Bogus lack of call/overrule on a well-long serve. She just gets hotter and hotter to me. ;D

Hahahahahaha Hewitt serves for the 3rd set at 5-4 just to get broken twice and lose it 5-7. Istomin had a spurt of energy and totally stepped it up, especially on that last set point. His groundstrokes remind me of Jiri Novak's but with a little more power.

That Venus struggled with Pan is no surprise to me. I tell ya, if Pan ever gets like ... an overhead or something, she's top 30! She's proof that waiting for errors still works on the women's side. I'm sorta glad Mirza survived the rising Bacsinszky. Now she gets Venus, and I hope, I hope, I hope, for the upset. Lisicki's progress brings her smack against Caroline Wozniacki in the third round, and I just don't know who it's gonna be. But one of those two in the fourth round rules. I would also like them to be met there by one Katarina Srebotnik. A-Rad nipped the #2 seed at the US Open. Can she do it again? Petrova seems like she may be vulnerable to Makarova. VRP-Hantuchova makes me chortle because the idea that those two play in the third round of a Slam in 2008 might have sent Hurley on that much-promised killing spree finally. And the winner faces the winner of Chak-Kirilenko! Gak! By the by, I didn't know Venus and Serena were playing doubles! When was the last time they did that ...

Oh god. Now I have to rely on Chak to beat Kirilenko AND Hanturexia, because either of those two getting to the QF would be horrific, and it would probably mean Hanturexia residing in the top 10 for ages.
Does A-Bond have issues about reaching the top 20? She's been on the brink for a while now; as top seed last week she lost in the 2R, and now she had about as clear a path to the round of 16 as she could have wished for. Wozniacki is good but still, 6 and 1...
Del Potro retired AGAIN?

I love Chak, and I don't think she'll always produce horrid tennis against the top players. We got that impression last year because she kept drawing Shriek, against whom she matches up badly. She did beat Venus over the summer, remember.
Like Leena, I used to be on the Petrova bandwagon...remember her 2005 pre-RG clay season? Her game has stagnated so much in the last year or so. She used to be able to beat anyone/lose to anyone, now she tends to beat who she's supposed to beat and always lose to the elite. Boring. Dead wood. Schnyder-esque.

I'm very surprised A-Bond lost to Wozniacki... that's a troubling loss, she should be too powerful for her at this point in her career.
I'd be shocked if Chak beats Maria. She played horrible today, and has been bad since her problems ensued.
Bascinszky has an enormous head. It's hard to tell how someone plays against Sania's stupid game. Go Venus! I don't think I've said that in a decade.

Terrible lost for Dmitry - just tons of unforced errors. But Sam runs really well for a guy 6'6''. See, Lindsay? Haase and Grosjean playing one of the matches of the tournament. This last game has been great! Haase's forehand on match point just hit the tape and didn't go over, but what a match. Nice to see Sebby still plugging away at the Majors.

Petrova's amazing clay season was actually as recent as 2006, but yes ever since that 2 and 2 loss to (Morigami?) in the 1st round of the French, she's been a different player. She's even having more and more difficulty beating the players she's supposed to beat, and has suffered many many pre-seeding losses at Slams the past couple of seasons. The bottom quarter of the women's draw is just so weak it's disgusting. Lindsay could have done her damage there and beaten everyone, maybe even Kuznetz. With Cornet out, I'm not sure who to root for to be a semifinalist? And I think the Williams played a Slam or two last year in doubles but lost early or withdrew because of singles. I think they play the #2 seeds next, should be a good match. And Lindsay/Dani are one game away from "upsetting" 11th seeded Kirilenko/Szavay. I looked up Vince Spadea on youtube.com, and damn I just think he rocks. He makes all these dumb videos of himself rapping. And as of 2008, his new habit is to post a video of just his face as he explains his next match-up: how his opponent plays, what he has to do, etc. Is that really a smart thing to do... what if his opponent heard about it and listened to his gameplan on youtube? Then again, it's not like Vince is full of surprises. He shouldn't lose to Gremelmayr after the amazing Stepanek comeback (his 300th career win). Marta-Sofia has begun! BATTLE ROYALE

Marta up 5-2. I like that. Spadea up a break in the 3rd. 5th. The Aussie seems to be losing steam against Nalby. Oh well. An upset would have been fun, but bring on JCF vs. David, battle of players who were better in 2003! ;D

With Cornet out, I'm not sure who to root for to be a semifinalist? A-Rad or Chak! I'd be very happy with either of them on the SF, or indeed in the final, or indeed as champions. And I do still like Sweta. She's a Lil' Wayne fan! Anyway, MARTA came out the winner of the rematch of legends, by the intriguing scoreline of 7-5, 1-6, 6-1.

BATTLE ROYALE I don't actually think the Morigami loss hurt Petrova that much. She was hurt. It must have been depressing, but the injury allowed us to write it off . However, the loss to Serena last year at the AO was the kicker, I think. Nadia had juuust put her game back together on the indoor circuit after getting hurt and was hungry to do damage at a Slam. And she had Serena, she really did. One game from dismissing her as efficiently as Petrova dismissed Davenport yesterday. Instead ... So nobody's whining over the lack of depth in men's tennis despite the way the top seeds are CRUSHING guys right and left? Gee, how odd. I'm happy for Grosjean to make it through that match with Haase. I guess he's got a fighting chance against Blake, and I wouldn't mind seeing him garner that upset, actually. I'm mildly surprised Gonzalez hasn't flipped out yet under the pressure of defending his '07 points. So Johansson-Baghdatis, won by Marcos who is now playing Safin, the winner to meet Hewitt. Talk about your tough section. Good for Spadea, pulling that match out. Now he plays Ferrer? Argh. I'm hoping Nalbandian makes it through there ...

Marat's hairline is starting to recede. And in case I didn't already point this out, he's wearing fluorescent green shirt!!!! THIS IS NOT OKAY, ADIDAS!
If his hair was a bit longer and he wasn't wearing that God awful shirt, he'd almost look not-half-bad. As it is now, he's doing nothing for me... as per usual.
Safin has apparently never come back from a 0-2 set deficit, or so my commentators say. Why would that not surprise me?

So nobody's whining over the lack of depth in men's tennis despite the way the top seeds are CRUSHING guys right and left? Gee, how odd. I know right. And most of the scorelines of the top women have been more than respectable. Have we even had any match go beyond 7-5 in the fifth on the men's side?? Gah, why hasn't Blake lost yet. I hate Spadea. There's "being a character" and "being a twat" and they are different things.

We've seen the "good Blake" in the 2 matches so far. That probably changes once he stops playing defensive guys he's not worried about.
Todd Martin > Any Current Tall USians. Bite your tongue!
There's been a fair share of upsets on the men's side. The top 6 are dominant, but that's because they're really good. It's hard to say the same about the women's side...

I was hoping that if I ignored it, it might stop happening. That and I've accepted that I might as well not tune in to a Djokovic-Fed-or-Nadal match until sometime next week. Now that I've said that, maybe one of them will lose. He's probably already accepted death-by-Federer in the quarters.
