Orange Bowl news from Juniortennis.com The tournament came to an end before it began for Kateryna Bondarenko. The girl's 18 number one seed retired, losing 3-6; 0-3, because of pain in her left leg, to Vania KIng. "It started to hurt yesterday and in the night I couldn't sleep," said Kateryna, explaining about the pain which started below the knee, and worked it's way up to her thigh. She called for the trainer after the first set, but after only three more games she reluctantly told the chair umpire she could not continue. So no more Orange Bowl for Kateryna, who will also pull out of doubles. "Maybe I can change my ticket," she added tearfully, just wanting to go home now back to the Ukraine. The 2nd ranked junior player in the world has been here on these shores since the end of October, playing WTA events in Quebec City, Pittsburgh, Tucson and Palm Beach Gardens on clay. As for Vania KIng, the fifteen year old American played through pain in her left leg also. "It's really hurting me," she said. "It was getting really hard to return and I couldn't bend." Needless to say the player from Southern California played brilliantly at times, probably producing some of the best tennis of the last three weeks. Not realizing other players hold her in high regard, she giggled, "I am baffled by that. I have not been doing too well in singles because I always get the first or second seed." Three weeks ago she pushed Monica Niculescu, seeded one, to three close sets at the Eddie Herr Championships. Monica said after the match that she was not looking forward to facing Vania, because "she is a difficult player." Vania changed a few things in her game just days before traveling to Eddie Herr. "I was deciding whether to even come to these tournaments," she said. "I try not to think about it during the match but my backhand and serve are different." Whose idea was it to change? I asked. "It's just a thought my dad had," she replied. "We just want to get everything down pat before I get too old. It's coming to the time, in a couple of years, when I have to decide if I should go to college." If she continues to play as well as today, she won't have to worry about making a decision. The pictorial evidence suggests that Vania King is of Asian extraction/me would submit that overplaying and getting injured is excellent preparation for reaching the WTA top ten

Donald Young got bery lucky...
Donald Young (5), always the showman and crowd puller, had the fans at the edge of their seats when he came back from a love first set to defeat fellow American, Carsten Ball, by returning the favor with his own love set, then fighting it out in a tiebreaker. Donald's serve let him down a few times, and in his view, he made the match a lot harder than it should have been. "In practice I am hitting my aces and returning the serves, but in the match I can't hit one in."
Carsten appeared on the verge on an upset at 5-2 in the third. "I thought I was going to lose," said Donald, who won this event in the 16s last year. "I knew he had trouble closing out matches because he get's a little tight in front of all the people so I just tried to stay calm and get the ball in. I was thinking about losing, and I didn't want to lose. Whatever it takes to win, I'll do."

Last year's boy's 18 champion, Marcos Baghdatis was spotted watching intently Irena Pavlovic for over three and a half hours as she fought a tough battle with Canadian, Melanie Gloria. The French girl succumbed in the end, 6-7; 6-3; 6-3.

I also see that the Kuwait kid Abdullah Magdas took out the 16th seed. Spencer Vegosen, the guy in the sandals who stirred up so much debate last week, upset Krasnoroutsky. That Donald Young score was 0-6; 6-0; 7-6(5). Vania King vs Mélanie Gloria in 2R... Schnack vs Kobak in 2R... Julia Cohen had another early loss, to a Pole of all things (albeit one who reached a $25K final this year, 16yo Magdalena Kiszczynska Andrea Glatch def. Sharon Fichman in straights Fernanda Hermenegildo (Q) BRA d. Vojislava Lukic SCG 4-6; 6-4; 7-6(4)

Young U.S. stars win in Round 1
BY DAVID KILMER
Miami Herald
Those interested in the future of U.S tennis were fixated on Donald Young and Alexa Glatch in Monday's opening round of the Orange Bowl International Tennis Tournament at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne.
Both won an OB title in the 16s division last year, and both are the youngest Americans playing in the 18s this year. They won their first-round matches Monday, but Young, the No. 5 seed, needed a third-set comeback to advance.
Young rallied from a break and 5-2 down in the final set to win 0-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) against fellow American Carsten Ball. The 15-year-old struggled, especially with his serve. ''It's not working right now,'' Young said. ``In practice I'm hitting aces, but I couldn't hit one in, until the end.''
Young's only ace in the final two sets gave him a match point in the tiebreak, and he converted on the next point to finish the match. Young is hoping to become the first American since Jim Courier to win the Orange Bowl 16s and then repeat as the 18s winner. Courier was on hand for Young's match and knows his game.
''I hit with him at the U.S. Open, and I love his game,'' Courier said. ``He has great vision on the court and hands you can't teach. He sees the ball early and takes the ball on the rise, hitting angles that other players can't achieve. He's playing against bigger, stronger players, and he's had to develop a tennis awareness to beat these guys with his mind.''
Glatch, also 15, has long, graceful strokes, a big first serve and fluid volleys. Against Canadian Sharon Fichman, a feisty 14-year-old over whom she stood a foot taller, Glatch won 7-5, 6-3.
Big old meany!

What young player is going to make the biggest impact in 2005? "Tomas Berdych, the guy from the Czech Republic, although Rafael Nadal would be the popular choice." -- J. Gimelstob

Tuesday stuff Even with no warm-up event and no competition for over two months, Sam Querrey came to the 2004 Orange Bowl and knocked out the Eddie Herr Champion, Jeremy Chardy (4) of France in straight sets in the second round of the boy's 18 singles championship. "I think I have a chance to win this tournament now," said the 6' 5" tall American, who practiced at home and concentrated on his schoolwork before coming here. He opted not to play the two ITF lead-in events in Florida, so he is probably one of the freshest players out there. Punching Bag Kryvonos (6) beat Spencer Sandalboy "British qualifier, Andrew Kennaugh, continues to play well here. Today he closed the door on Abdullah Magdas from Kuwait, 6-2; 6-0." Donald Young def. another Brit, Faris Khatib, 2 & 2 Vania King over Melanie Gloria 3 & 1

"The reigning 2003 Orange Bowl girl's 16 champion, Alexa Glatch paid no heed to the cooler temperatures when she upset the 5th seed, Marina Erakovic, to reach the girl's 18 singles third round.", 7-6(5); 6-2.
The Kiwi has been blowing in recent months.
/me approves of this:
The easy-going American does not grunt, like so many of her peers, even when crushing a backhand down the line. She also makes no protests whatsoever when calls are a bit suspect, and there were a few today, so her opponents never see her rattled. "It's my personality I guess," she said. "It goes both ways so you can't really worry about it."
Schnack d. Kobak 6-2; 4-6; 7-6(5), and will next play rampant Jessica Kirkland (who defeated Fernanda Hermenegildo by a score that is not important).

Tennis: Guccione caught by Nettle's sting By LEO SCHLINK in Melbourne 16dec04 SOUTH Australian Shannon Nettle yesterday ended vaunted Chris Guccione's Australian Open training camp wildcard hopes with a shock opening-round win at Melbourne Park. Ranked 417th in the world, 24-year-old Nettle tamed Guccione's fearsome serve to post a 7-6, 7-5 victory to plunge one of the brightest Australian talents' hopes of contesting the centenary Open next month into doubt. Guccione, ranked 281st, has been afflicted by injury and form fluctuations since stunning world No. 3 Juan Carlos Ferrero with a tremendous win at the adidas International at Homebush in Sydney. ... South Australian Jaslyn Hewitt threatened second seed Casey Dellacqua before departing 7-6, 6-3 as Adelaide 16-year-old Olivia Lukaszewicz destroyed Christina Horiatopoulos 6-1, 6-0.

Ha, Guccione and Hewette! ;D Poor Fichman and Melanie Gloria. Actually, I am disappointed in MG! How is she ever going to enter Tombeau's top-2,500 faves list if she can't even make late rounds at the OB!

Kirkland whooped Kudryavtseva, 2 & 0
Argies sweep the 16u with Florencia Molinero and Emiliano Massa, woohoo. I am reasonably sure that Emiliano is Edgardo's brother.
