Probable final: Dabek vs Dittman, golly gee ;D Of course -- I just hope the deterioration doesn't start too early there.

Tennis stars pay the price to live their dreams; Hard work and commitment are often just the beginning The Hamilton Spectator Wednesday, July 13, 2005 Melissa Mewdell As his daughter sent a speeding tennis ball into the net, Bebe Zoricic keeled over -- a grimace creasing his face. "It's way easier to play than to watch," he said. "How many times do I want to just get in there and hit the bloody ball?" The father of Toronto's Katarina Zoricic calls himself a professional tennis dad. Even though he works for Bell Mobility, his real job, like many of the other parents accompanying their daughters to the BC Decker International Women's Tennis Tournament, is to make sure his daughter succeeds. Many of the parents have sold their homes, cars, and in some cases, have quit their paying jobs to become full-time tennis parents. Zoricic was perspiring almost as much as his daughter yesterday during the opening day of the tournament. Katarina Zoricic lost to American Lauren Barnikow (3-6, 6-3, 6-1). split sets, woohooZoricic's match was the beginning of a brutal day for other Canadians playing singles, with only one -- Melanie Gloria -- moving on. But, good teamwork prevailed in the afternoon sending four out of five doubles teams with Canadian players to the next round. While the girls on the courts played it cool, their parents sweated intensely from the onlooking deck of the Hamilton Tennis Club. "It's all up to the parents," explained Zoricic during his daughter's match. "You could build a house if you didn't play tennis. The better [the player] the worse for us." Zoricic explained that competitive tennis comes with a hefty price tag. Many of the players require a full-time coach (between $50,000 and $100,000 a year), home schooling and, unless they have a sponsor, someone to foot the bill for all of the travelling and accommodation costs they incur while playing tournaments. Samar El Tabakh is a true tennis mom. She said her family sold their two homes, car, and all of their belongings in Egypt when they immigrated to Canada, all to help their daughter, London, Ont.'s Haidy El Tabakh, advance her tennis career. "It's crazy expensive. It's so, so expensive," said the mom as she watched her daughter practice yesterday afternoon. "I'm trying to get her to achieve her dream." El Tabakh, who was an accountant at the Bank of America, quit to become her daughter's coach when they moved to Canada in 1997. Now, she tries to balance her time between her daughter and her son, who also plays tennis competitively. Gail Seredni is American tennis player Chrissie Seredni's mom. She works as a tax accountant, but tries to be a tennis mom as often as possible. "We run up a hefty equity line on our house," she said. "There's nothing easy about this sport at all." The mother said she makes travel arrangements, books and cancels tournaments and substitutes as coach sometimes while working to fund her daughter's tennis career. Despite the investment in her daughter's success, Seredni said she's good at controlling her emotions when Chrissie plays. "You have to remember yourself that you've agreed to do this," she said. "If I agree to gamble, I've gotta agree to accept a loss." The mother was true to her word yesterday, demonstrating good sportsmanship and support when her daughter lost to No. 1 seed Tiffany Dabek of Florida, whose mom was also in attendance. Dabek said she does most of the work for her career herself. But her mother Ingrid Dabek's role was clear as she braved the 35 C heat to shadow her daughter. The tournament continues today.

Probably they both lost in Q Rd 1 by a score of 06 06, if I know my Kourni-wannabes! ;D
Let me fetch the link, though. You might recognize some of the other players.

Maybe tomorrow I will be wiser. The blondes could be Jessica Williams and Georgette Wright? They are (were) a doubles tandem and this is certainly Georgette's style.

Namigata has had some pretty good results. She seems to be one of these Japanese ladies who go to uni and bloom tardily. Plus, er, hubba hubba. Matic-Wozniak is intriguing since I have never seen Wozniak play, and then the Czafikova match, and then zzzz in the top quarter. Those would be my priorities. Woohoo.

Oh, you haven't seen Wozniak before? Then there are 2 interesting matches, out of 4, which is very, very great for a $25K Quarterfinal round! Usually by then it's all down to Miss Quelqu'unovas vs Miss Quelqu'unevas. Rah rah Brinyiville, beating the odds! I hope you won't be having one of those canicules up there, like we are having here.
