Keep your eye out in your neighborhood for Maria-Jose, Brinyi -- she might already be up there, since she already lost this week. Shame you will miss Iyer, Glatch and Esperon. I hope David & Dancevic get to play! How many days can you go?

btw, what are the 1s and 2s, etc, following the player rankings?

These numbers refer to "priority". God knows what that means!
I haven't seen the Argeri Terror in my neighborhood yet, but there are tennis courts right behind where I live -- she could board with me and I could hit with her in the park, it seems like a logical way to proceed. Oops! It's a clay court tournament. Forget that idea.
I think I will go to qualies on Sunday, and then maybe take Friday off for the quarters. Then, maybe the "championship weekend" too unless the tournament has deteriorated by then (as they tend to do).

Yes, even Friday's quarters might be iffy! :-D I am rooting for Melanie Gloria to find glory in Brinyiville! If not her, then I hope one of the Canadians or South Americans can win. But who am I kidding ... we know it will be an Eastern European. btw, are you having the "Kourni vs. some elderly retiree" exo again alongside the Challenger?

What?? You're not interested in seeing Rosie Casals getting called out of retirement to play Kourni??

If it was Evonne Goolagong, I'd consider it.

Wow, Serena is really struggling. ;D
I'm glad I didn't go! I found out the Q1R was Sunday, and the first round of qualies is usually like that.

Yeah, and you couldn't even have enjoyed the one match that looks like it was competitive, because somehow I think you'd've been rooting for the exotic Krishnamurthy over her conqueror, the bland dish of Rice.

Woohoo -- good luck to Monika today against Nina Pantic, a 16yo from that hotbed of Canadian tennis, Boca Raton. It appears she's originally from Victoria over in Infection's part of Canada.

Future tennis stars show their stuff; Women aim to improve rank and take a share of winnings The Hamilton Spectator Tuesday, July 12, 2005 Melissa Mewdell Nina Pantic started playing tennis at age four. Her aspiration is to become a professional player and she took another step in that direction by winning a split set yesterday at the BC Decker International Women's Tennis Tournament. In preparation for the week-long tournament now underway at the Hamilton Tennis Club, Pantic, 16, a Canadian now living in Florida, practised six hours a day in the months leading up to the tournament. That work brought dividends yesterday afternoon when she took a split set from fellow Canadian Monika Dancevic, 18. (what is this split set stuff?) "[Tennis] is all I do," she said before her match against Dancevic, 18. "I hope to win." Grouped with 13 other young women trying to qualify in the sweltering heat, Pantic was one of five Canadians who advanced to the tournament's main draw which starts today and ends Sunday. There are 32 players -- 12 of whom are Canadian -- competing for $25,000 US in prize money. But competitors and organizers agree, the tournament, now in its third year, isn't only about the money. "This is where our junior women get points and ranking," said Brian Decker, president of the Hamilton club and founder of the tournament. Ranking points are very important to tennis players trying to advance their careers. The better a player's world ranking (decided by a combination of points, wins and how well she does against the competition), the better her chances at getting a good seeding. In a tournament, the highest seeded players play against the lowest seeded ones first and this improves their chances of progressing through the rounds and winning more money. Aleksandra Wozniak, the top Canadian participant and seeded seventh overall for the tournament, said her main reason for competing is to maintain her points. She was courtside with her mother yesterday, but didn't need to qualify because she had been accepted based on her world ranking of 309th overall. Planning to turn pro on her 18th birthday in September, she was there to scope out the competition as well as to practise on the clay courts. "I can't wait to get out there and kick some ass," said the 17-year-old from Laval, Quebec. Last year, Wozniak made it to both the singles and doubles semifinals in this tournament. She said that this year, training for more than 28 hours a week, her game is better developed. "I feel good, I feel confident," she said. "The competition looks tough, but you take it one match at a time." Unlike last year's tournament, which saw high-profile guests like Anna Kournikova and all the bells and whistles that come with her (a stadium, black tie dinner and fundraising for charity), this year's focus is strictly on tennis. "Two-thirds of our energy went into the peripheral event," said Decker of last year's tournament. The publicity from last year was able to generate more interest in the international tournament and means it has attracted better tennis players this time around, he said. He's hoping that the girls competing will build on their ranking points and that the tournament will both promote tennis internationally and in Hamilton.

I guess this is the only result we are going to learn today, then? No Q Rd 2 scores, no main draw. Boo Brinyiville tournament! (though it's a big plus that they dropped the AK exo!)
