Neha and Shikha seem to be going nowhere fast. In the rankings, Shikha is hanging on (barely) in the top 200; for perspective, a ranking near-neighbor of hers is the French teen Alizé Cornet -- but Alizé has played just 14 tournaments over the past year, while Shikha has a whopping 27.
Neha is doing even worse; with 20 tournaments on the year, she's ranked ~250, right in the neighborhood of young Alexa Glatch. In fact, Alexa will pass Neha in the rankings mext week despite the fact that, due to a prolonged injury break, she's played just 9 tournaments in the last 52 weeks.
I heard from our old CNNSI-board crony, Kathy Roberts, a few weeks ago. She is sure that the Uberois are right on the verge of big breakthroughs (she's working with them a little bit, in some unknown capacity). I hope she's right; the clock is ticking ...

No, Kathy's a big anti-druggite. I met her once; she looks a little like Chanda.

Neha just lost meekly to some Indian bumpkinette. Should we e-mail her the Princeton admissions office phone number yet?

Sunitha Rao had an equally crappy loss, and she's been a lost cause for far longer. I think Indian-Americans just suck at tennis: they're probably exhausted from dodging Brinyi at every turn!

I also thought of Sunitha. I was hoping that ditching her Bad Dad would help her, but it turns out she's just not any good. Neha and Shikha have yet to dump their overbearing Dad, so who knows if that'd help in their case. But time's a-wastin' ...

They are still better than the Indian-Canadian Oberoi sisters, who seem to be retired.

I have actually watched Rao play. Sad to say, she isn't very good. Small girl, no power. It's not going to happen for her.

Neha just lost meekly to some Indian bumpkinette. Should we e-mail her the Princeton admissions office phone number yet? Give it to Shikha. She's yet to win a match this year and is lower-ranked than her sister now. And THIS performance is really something ... Q- R32 H2H (W) LERTCHEEWAKARN, NOPPAWAN THA 891 L 1-6 7-6(3) 6-2

Hey, that Noppawan is a future star! Even the likes of ... er ... Lilia Osterloh would have lost to her that day. But no, I didn't realize that Shikha is ranked below Neha now. Sheesh.

I will never forget Dustin's comment after we saw Rao: "Wow, she's hot. But she should probably go to college."

sad Uberoi update:Neha, the US Uberoi, is currently ranked 317, with 20 tournaments. :red: This week you can find her in Aurangabad, India, playing $10K QUALIES. Oh the privileged world of the Ivy League seems so long ago .... Shikha, the Indian Uberoi, hasn't played since retiring in a match in Estoril qualies, back in April, while leading 60 30. That must have been a terrible injury to keep her out so long. Consequently, she is now ranked 727, with 8 tournaments.

Interesting note: there were two other Indian Uberois playing in those 10K qualies this weekend: Nikita "don't call me Khrushchev" and Nimita. But Uberoi fans should not plan to switch their allegiance to these two characters -- they both lost in qr1 to other unknown Indians, winning only 5 games between them.

Uberoi sisters: Double impactBy Jaydip Sengupta, Sports Writer Published: December 18, 2008, Right choice: The Uberoi sisters, Shikha, right, and Neha, in action at the Al Habtoor Challenge.
The Uberoi sisters made headlines in 2005 when they reached the final of the WTA Tour Sunfeast Open in Kolkata. Since then, their fortunes have been mixed with the elder sibling Shikha having to take a long lay-off in 2007 due to asthma , despite making an impact with the Indian Fed Cup team alongside Sania Mirza. Neha, on her part, will have to continue her wait into next year before she can play for India, as she is still a US citizen. It’s her second visit to the Al Habtoor Challenge after last year, while for the 25-year-old Shikha it’s her first and although the duo lost their doubles opener against the top seeds, their cause not helped by the fact that they were playing together for the first time in 10 months, the Mumbai residents are happy to be alive and playing tennis. Shocking affair "I was playing a tournament in Japan when the Mumbai terror attacks took place and I was so shocked," said Shikha. "I was supposed to go to Mumbai two days after the attacks began, but I changed my flight plans and went to New Delhi instead to practise. They hit all the places that we frequent in Mumbai. It was very scary," Shikha added. The 22-year-old Neha added that they were also lucky since one of their cousins, Saincher, a food and beverage manager at the Oberoi Trident, one of the hotels hit, was not at work when the attacks took place. "Both he and his wife were elsewhere when it happened," Neha said. The Uberoi sisters are also thankful that Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, who also happens to be their cousin , was away in Philadelphia shooting for his new movie. "While we are lucky, we feel terrible for all those people who were not," Shikha said. The sisters also expressed their concerns about a couple of high-profile WTA tour events being cancelled in India. "The cancellation of the Sunfeast Open and the Bangalore Open had nothing to do with the terror attacks. It was all due to bad management," said Shikha. "We would like to have at least one WTA Tour event in India, but how do we ask? "When everything was fine we couldn’t hold on to the two tournaments. Now, after the attacks, who would want to play a tournament in India? I mean, I myself would rather play here in the peace and security of Dubai than play back home." Despite their obvious anger at the way things back home are handled, the sisters will be going back to New Delhi next to play a $50,000 tournament. And then Shikha will be partnering Mirza and Sunitha Rao, another player who has switched her allegiance to India from the US, to play in the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania zone 1 in Perth from February 2. Sister Saga * Shikha had a career-high singles ranking of 122 in 2005 * Even before Sania Mirza hit the scene, Shikha became the first woman of Indian origin to make it to the second round of a Grand Slam * Shikha has reached the doubles final of three WTA Tour events * Both Shikha and Neha attended the Harry Hopman Tennis Academy in their youth * There are five Uberoi sisters and all of them play tennis. www.xpress4me.com/sport/uae/tennis/20011027.html

New Indian rules will prevent Shikha, along with Sunitha Rao, from playing Fed Cup any more unless they become Indian citizens with Indian, not US, passports.
It's confusing but it doesn't seem as if "dual nationality" will be acceptable, since you'd think at least Shikha would already have that, and since "Shikha had declared in her interviews to the media that she's willing to give up her US citizenship in order to continue playing for India".
So the Indian Fed Cup team consists of Sania, the two Bhambri's, and the perennially hopeless 31-year-old Rushmi Chakravarthi. Goodbye to the top rungs!

Just learned on TF that Shikha won the doubles in a 10K in Buffalo, NY a couple weeks ago. Afterward she spoke to the media (okay, a reporter from The Buffalo News): "For me, these are the tournaments I can get into because my ranking is no longer 87," the 28-year-old Uberoi said. "It's in the 800s or something. I don't even know what is. I wouldn't even say I'm playing to collect points. I'm playing to enjoy the game. I know I can win a Grand Slam in doubles, but I'm back in college. I have two businesses. So this is a passion for me."

I wonder if she was misquoted and actually said she could win a Grand Slam match in doubles...
