Hi Brinyi! Thanks for your NY greeting! 2006 is starting okay for me because I am finally starting to recover from a darned bad case of flu (I blame George Bush: damned US flu vaccine shortage!) Am sorry to hear Guga will not be in Australia. Not that he ever lit up the joint or anything (to say the least) , but if he went, it would mean he was doing very well physically, and that is what I want to hear.

Ja, although he was awesome in Auckland a few times! The only thing I saw about him in the past week was that he was training at the the Larri Passos academy -- but it was just because there were good practice partners there. He is still being coached by Gumy.

Thanks, that is a lot better than no news at all. Don't know why my first thoughts on "Men's Tennis: 2006" were all about Guga. I guess I just miss him a lot.

Guga is in Barcelona. He is getting examined by Dr Angel Cotorro, the physician with the Spanish federation. After this week he will return to Brazil for further training. Both Guga and Gumy gave lots of optimistic and upbeat quotes as usual.

What, he went all the way to Spain to see a doctor?? Holy cow, that CANNOT be good (despite the optimistic and upbeat quotes! Hey Guga, actions speak louder than palabras! No one who is feeling well flies thousands of kilometres to see a medico!)

No one who is feeling well flies thousands of kilometres to see a medico!) I had the same thought. The article does point out that this medico has been overseeing a large part of his recovery, so I am hoping it's not bad news.

One of us should casually stop by Barcelona and get the scoop ... any volunteers? Fluency in Catalan helpful, but not required ...

"Nadal played for 40 minutes with Gustavo Kuerten to ascertain his fitness. He beat Kuerten but decided that he was still in no shape to play at the Australian Open. " Poor Guga, he can't even beat a one-legged player.

It'll be interesting to see how he does in Viña del Mar next week, woohoo Guga twisted his ankle during practise and withdrew from Viña del Mar. So he will have absolutely 0 match practise before DC tie. And Brazil relies on him to win

Guga withdraws from ATP event in Chile Associated Press 1/27/2006 5:44:28 PM SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten has withdrawn from the $380,000 US ATP Vina del Mar tournament in Chile after twisting his ankle during practice. The 29-year-old Kuerten, who following hip surgery in September 2004 has fallen to 291st in the ATP rankings, said he injured his ankle during a training session in Brazil on Thursday. Kuerten said the injury wasn't serious and that he should begin practising again next week. The Vina del Mar tournament starts Monday. ''It was a pity this happened right now,'' Kuerten said. ''I was ready to compete.'' On Thursday, Kuerten was included in Brazil's Davis Cup team for its Americas Zone Group 1 match against Peru March 10-12. Captain Fernando Meligeni also called Andre Sa, Ricardo Mello and Brazil's top-ranked player, Flavio Saretta. Kuerten is the Brazil's eighth-highest ranked player. The former top-ranked player in the world has played in only nine ATP tour events since his hip surgery over a year ago and none since losing in the second round of the U.S. Open to Tommy Robredo.

Guga's ankle has apparently not completely healed. Yes, in a Brasilian article, Meligeni didn't say it outright but he has no confidence at all in Guga.
