Guga has turned down a WC at Pörtschach next week and will make an announcement about RG, where he has also been offered a wild card. He's apparently been doing training and physio work alongside Larri Passos.

GOOGLE TRANSLATION: Gustavo Kuerten announces that she will not play in Roland Garros
Decision was based on its physical preparation, that not yet is the ideal to play Guga will not play the Open one of France, in Paris, where already it conquered three headings
FLORIANÓPOLIS - Gustavo Kuerten will not dispute match of Roland Garros, as the Grand Slam of season, that will start in next day 27, in Paris. After weeks of training, in Camboriú (SC), tenista decided, in this Wednesday, not to travel to France and to continue working until if feeling in a higher competitive level.
“My objective continues being to compete with possibilities e equal conditions to the ones of the players who are in the circuit. I am training direct and working sufficiently. I had a good growth in the last weeks, what it leaves me livened up, but still I have oscillated between good days e others, more or less. Necessary to have a reply more positive continuously of my body to be able to fight with the faces of equal for equal,” Guga explained.
The Brazilian arrived to receive invitations to dispute the matches of the européia season of gross sand, including its favourite person or thing, Roland Garros, where it is tricampeão (1997, 2000 and 2001). However, he gave up all to prepare itself better. “I am the first one that he would like to be there, but for me valley the penalty not to go for a match where I had as much success, where I conquered as many things, that mine he gave in such a way and that I have an enormous respect, only stops to appear. The idea is not this. Still I want to play more and in a competitive level.”
The catarinense tenista still does not know when it will come back to play in the professional circuit. But it guaranteed that, as soon as to feel itself soon, it will be in you square them competing. “I go to continue training, until I feel, in mine day-by-day that I reached a better standard and that gives for I to compete without the physical disadvantages.”What a shame that Guga has to miss his beloved gross sand season.

I couldn't decide if I was happy or upset to see Guga at RG. Don't really want to see him there in that get-up instead of his tennis clothes, I guess. But I was excited to hear him speaking French -- he's brave! But overall the experience of seeing him was a little bit of a heartbreaker for me.

Kuerten makes US Open comeback
Posted on Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 23:01
Former world number one and triple French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten, whose career has been blighted by injury in recent years, will play doubles at the US Open, his spokesman said on Sunday. The Brazilian, who will be 31 on September 10, was granted a wildcard by the organisers of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season which starts in New York on Monday.
Kuerten, who will play doubles with America's Robby Ginepri, has undergone two operations on a long-standing hip injury and played just two tour matches in 2006.
His last appearance on the tour was a first round defeat at the Miami Masters in March.

Kuerten Mulls Retirement If He Fails To Become Competitive Again
9/12/2007 4:00:00 PM
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten might retire if he fails to play competitive tennis next year.
The 31-year-old Brazilian was ranked No. 1 in 2000 but is now 662nd. He has a 2-7 singles record this season, his first playing regularly on ATP tour since hip surgery in September 2004.
``My goal is to try to gain more confidence and feel conformable for the singles tournaments, and I think next year I need to be feeling that way and competing at a high level,'' he said at a news conference Wednesday. ``If I can't, I'll probably opt to do other things and plan the end of my career.''
Kuerten won the last of his 20 titles in February 2004. He won the French Open in 1997, 2000 and 2001. Despite poor results in recent years, he had always dismissed the option of retirement.
``The goal today is to extend my career,'' he said.
Kuerten will be a reserve on Brazil's Davis Cup squad that will face Austria in the playoffs Sept. 21-23. Brazil is trying to return to the World Group for the first time since 2003.

The guy in "Into the Wild" looks scarily like Guga. Not the guy in the movie, which I haven't seen, but Google pictures of the real Chris McCandless. I just read the book and I keep somehow thinking Guga is starving up there in the wilds of Alaska ... even though McCandless died 15 years ago.

I just read in Wertheim's column that Guga's brother died. RIP, sweet little brother. Poor Guga. Florianopolis. Brazil November 8, 2007 'Guga' Kuerten Mourning Death of Younger Brother © Gustavo Kuerten Gustavo Kuerten Guilherme, the younger brother of former ATP World No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten, died on Wednesday. The 28-year-old, who suffered from cerebral palsy, died at the University Hospital in Florianopolis accompanied by his brothers Gustavo and Rafael and his mother Alice. Despite his health problems, Guilherme travelled the world with three-time former Roland Garros champion Gustavo. "Gui was a fighter, since the day he was born. Many years ago there was a lot of prejudice against people with special needs like him and I am sure he broke barriers and helped it to be diminished," said Guga about his younger brother, to whom he dedicated all of his trophies. The 31-year-old Kuerten was slowed by a continuing hip problem, which limited him to only nine ATP level matches (2-7) this season.

Report: Brazil's Kuerten to play his last season in 2008
SAO PAULO, Brazil - Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten will play his farewell season in 2008, the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported Sunday.
The 31-year-old Brazilian plans to play only in a few tournaments before retiring, but said he wants Roland Garros to be among them.
"I want to play in tournaments that are special for me," Kuerten said Friday. "I've been practising and there are only a few details to finalize my schedule."
He also was expected to play in the Brasil Open and the Master Series in Miami, the Estado said.
Last year, Kuerten said for the first time that he may retire from professional tennis if he fails to stay competitive in 2008.
Ranked 680th by the ATP tour, Kuerten had a 2-7 singles record last season, his first playing regularly on tour since hip surgery in September 2004.
The Brazilian, ranked No. 1 in 2000, won the last of his 20 titles in February 2004. He won the French Open in 1997, 2000 and 2001.

"I have been training well with Larri (Passos, his coach). I am following a preparation routine for 2008 which assumes I will be playing in big tournaments like Roland Garros. I also hope to play the Davis Cup, but I have to be named. I feel I am in good shape. If the coach calls me I am going to play. After all this, I have plans to continue working in tennis at Larri's academy and mine."
-- G. Kuerten

I guess Guga can still be competitive even if he's limping around and struggling... but, if he plays like he did in Las Vegas last year, it's too sad to watch.

Guga claims first win in a year in Santa Catarina Challengerwww.chinaview.cn 2008-04-16 11:20:01 BRASILIA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- After nearly one year without a victory,Gustavo Kuerten won his opener of his farewell tour on Tuesday night at the Santa Catarina Open. Guga beat Columbian Carlos Salamanca 6-4, 6-4 in the men's singles first round of the ATP tournament in Miami. "The strategy of my game depends on how I am feeling physically. My condition is lower nowadays," said Kuerten after Tuesday's win. It was his first victory since February 2007 in Las Vegas where he beat South African Wesley Moddie in straight sets. Tuesday's game was crowded with fans, friends and family members to see Guga's game. Fans that were unable to enter the stadium crowded the gates from the outside in hopes of seeing him play. Salamanca seemed nervous throughout the game while Guga began to feel sharp pains in his quadriceps during the second set. However, Guga persevered and used multiple service breaks to win sets, before he went on to set up a second round face off against compatriot Franco Ferreiro, 23, currently ranked No. 213 in the world. [Guga subsequently lost to Ferreiro 57 67 ]

Brazilian Kuerten loses in men's doubles tennis at home Posted: 2008/04/17 From: Mathaba Gustavo Kuerten did not have as much luck as before on Wednesday in the men's doubles tournament of the Santa Catarina Challenger.
BRASILIA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Along side his 15-year-old partner Tiago Fernandes, Kuerten was beaten by fellow Brazilians Julio Silva and Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-2, 6-3.
"The game was quite different from yesterday. There wasn't nearly as much energy in the atmosphere due to the small crowd. Itwas harder to concentrate in the improvised conditions," said Kuerten after Wednesday's loss.
Due to the heavy rains in the state of city of Florianopolis, the match was moved from an outdoor stadium to a covered stadium with less seating capacity.
In the game, the rivals took advantage of the lack of experience of Fernandes and attacked the net as much as possible.
Guga joked around with the youngster in an attempt to kill his nervousness, but to no avail.
Julio and Rogerio played a solid game from the first serve on. Kuerten and Fernandes seemed to have run out of gas and were unable to keep up with their compatriots.
After the game, the former No. 1 of the tennis world claimed that he was tired.
"Tlthough we lost, it was worth it. It was a tough match and I was quite tired," he said.
On Thursday, Guga will return to the singles tournament to face the Brazilian, Franco Ferriero in the second round of the Santa Catarina Challenger.

Guga tidbits:
1. His fave team, Avai of Florianopolis, is back in the first division after a 30 year absence. "It's the greatest moment in Avai history, its greatest victory," Kuerten said. "It's like the last episode of a soap opera, with a happy ending."
2. Guga will soon audition for entry into the Drama program at the University of Florianopolis.
