Guga has been working hard all this time in Rio. He is travelling this week to the US to be examined by Dr Philippon, and there may be some indication after that of when he might return to the tour.

from CNNSI:
Kuerten out of Davis Cup, U.S. Open Posted: Thursday July 27, 2006 4:08PM
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten said Thursday he will miss next month's U.S. Open and Brazil's Davis Cup match against Sweden in September.
Kuerten will be sidelined for at least four weeks because of a right thigh injury, according to the player's Web site.
He has not set a date for his return to professional tennis.
"It's better if I don't create any expectations," he said. "I need to be patient right now."
Kuerten, who has played only one singles match this year, spent several weeks nursing a hip injury at a clinic in the United States earlier this year. He missed Brazil's 4-0 Davis Cup win over Ecuador in April because of the hip ailment.
Kuerten has played only four doubles matches this year, winning three of them.
Brazil hosts Sweden from Sept. 22-24 in a Davis Cup World Group playoff. The U.S. Open starts Aug. 28.
Kuerten, who was ranked No. 1 by the ATP in 2000, won the last of his 20 tour titles in February 2004. He had surgery in September 2004 to remove bone spurs from his hip and played sparingly thereafter, never advancing past the second round of tournaments.
The 29-year-old was eliminated by countryman Andre Ghem in the first round of the Brasil Open in February in his only ATP singles match of the season.
Kuerten, presently ranked No. 509, won the French Open in 1997, 2000 and 2001

again with the CNNSI stuff:
Kuerten dismisses talk of retirement
Sunday September 3, 2006
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten has dismissed reports he will retire from professional tennis.
The 29-year-old Brazilian scheduled a press conference for next week "to make an announcement," prompting speculation that he would officially put an end to his professional career.
The player's press office was quick to deny any possibility of retirement, however, saying Saturday that he will only talk about his recovery from a chronic hip injury that has kept him from playing in the past several months.
"He's definitely not retiring, there's no truth to that," Kuerten's spokeswoman Diana Gabanyi said.
Kuerten played only one singles match this year, being eliminated by Andre Ghem in the first round of the Brasil Open in February. He had four doubles matches, winning three of them.
The Brazilian spent several weeks nursing the hip injury at a clinic in the United States earlier this year, missing Brazil's Davis Cup win over Ecuador in April.
Kuerten also will likely miss Brazil's encounter against Sweden on Sept. 22-24 in a Davis Cup World Group playoff.
Kuerten, who was ranked No. 1 in 2000, won the last of his 20 tour titles in February 2004. He had surgery in September 2004 to remove bone spurs from his hip and played sparingly thereafter, never advancing past the second round of any tournament.
Kuerten, now ranked No. 576, won the French Open in 1997, 2000 and 2001.

His name is not on the team and I am not surprised.
Mello, Daniel, Sa and Saretta are. Even Alves, the latest #1 Brasilian, is not pick. At least Guga has some practise and hope he will be there to cheer his fellow Brasilians.

Apparently Guga had a great start but started blowing as the match went on. He lost 4 service games in a row at one point.

Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten has dismissed claims that Roger Federer could be the greatest tennis player of all time insisting that Pete Sampras was "much better."
Kuerten also went on to say that he felt Ayrton Senna was a better driver than Michael Schumacher in an interview with TV Globo in his native Brazil.
"In Formula One, Schumacher took advantage of Senna's death to conquer the sport, just like Federer took advantage of the vacuum left by Sampras to obtain his victories," said Kuerten.
"Both are good players, but I prefer Sampras."
"Guga's hip injury has obviously moved to his brain," scoffed a Canadian geezer at the back of the room.
Kuerten won the French Open three times and has beaten both Federer and Sampras in his career.

Kuerten to play singles in Paraguay
Posted: Friday November 10, 2006 1:49PM
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Gustavo Kuerten will play in a Challenger Series event in Paraguay next week, his first singles tournament since February.
Kuerten's last match came in Brazil's Davis Cup event against Sweden in September. He played doubles, losing in four sets. The 30-year-old Kuerten has been sidelined with chronic hip injuries.
"I'm very excited and motivated," Kuerten said. "Playing in this tournament will help me a lot."
Kuerten has played only one singles match this year, losing to Andre Ghem in the first round of the Brasil Open in February. He has played five doubles matches, winning three.
Kuerten, the top-ranked player in 2000, spent several weeks at a clinic in the United States earlier this year. He is currently ranked 1,137th.
The three-time French Open winner and Sampras fan captured the last of his 20 titles in February 2004.
The Challenger Series event begins Monday in Asuncion, Paraguay.

If Guga can just win a few matches against any sort of player at all, like Dokic did last week against some super-lowlies, I will be so happy.

IT'S NOT KUERTENS YET FOR GUGA
Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten is ready to make his comeback after nine months of inactivity.
'Guga' has been handed a wild card for the Petrobras Cup in Asuncion, Paraguay, and will participate in both the singles and doubles events.
"I am ready to play again," said the three-time French Open winner.
"I felt excellent last week. I trained very well. And I will step up my training," added the 30-year-old, who has not played a singles match since February.
Kuerten's only competitive action in the last nine months came when he played against Sweden in a Davis Cup doubles match in September.
"I am motivated. I have been playing tennis for three weeks and I think the Asuncion tournament will help me a lot," the former world number one added.
Coach Larri Passos, who returned to work alongside Kuerten two months ago, believes the Asuncion Challenge is the perfect place for his player to make his comeback.
"Guga showed me that he is ready. This is the moment to return and Asuncion is an ideal place," said Passos.
"If he plays two matches, it will be good. If he plays three, it will be optimal. And if he plays four, it will be exceptional. And if he plays six, he will match Dokic!"
