Awww, thanks for the beautiful pics, RF! Wouldn't it be amazing, if he could announce his return to form by a memorable upset? Maybe he will mistake Agassi for Sampras.

Poor Alex...when will he get a kinder draw?? Alex Corretja Tuesday, August 26, 2003 THE MODERATOR: Questions for Alex, please. Q. I was in Comack last week, and things didn't go well for you there. Obviously things didn't go well today. Was last week a precursor to how your game is? ALEX CORRETJA: It's not just Comack. It's been a while already that my game hasn't been at the place I would like to. But I'm in a process which I'm working hard to be back at my highest level. Of course, it will take a while. This is not going from one day to the other. It's been a difficult season for me in the tennis way. I'm just trying to do my best. It's not just because I lost last week. I come up here lack of confidence. It's already been a few more weeks. Q. How did it happen that you've had this kind of season? ALEX CORRETJA: Well, I believe after many good seasons and many years on the tour and traveling and playing and practicing, spending time out of house, sometimes you feel a little human being and you feel tired. That's all. I mean, there's not much to say. It's just regular life. I believe everyone goes in a process which is not easy to solve. You just got to find the solutions. I'm working on that. It's nothing have to be too much worry. It's just that I need to continue in the same way I am right now. Q. With Pete Sampras' retirement last night, people were asking about the famous 1996 match. Is that your most memorable match? ALEX CORRETJA: No. For me it was a huge match. It was the beginning of a nice career for me, I would say. Since that match, I started to play much better. But for me the best moment it was winning, probably when I won the Masters or when we won Davis Cup, when I was winning like a few Masters Series and many other titles. But I learn a lot from that loss, but of course it's not my best memory. [ Yeah, you tell 'em, Alex! Q. Todd Martin came in yesterday and said Pete Sampras ruined a lot of careers. Do you think if you had won that match that day, your career would be any different? ALEX CORRETJA: That will be impossible to know. I don't know if on that time I was ready to be on that kind of level. I was pretty young. For me playing on hard courts, it was at the beginning pretty much difficult. It change already. I mean, it brought me to a different step. I don't care about if I would have won. But, of course, sometimes there are winnings or losings that affect yourself. But on that situation, it only gave me confidence. I don't think that was the match that it took me down. It was the opposite: it took me pretty high up. Q. Do you think on the ranking that a guy that doesn't win a Grand Slam in a year should be a No. 1 or should the rankings work that way, that even if you don't win a Grand Slam, you can probably get to No. 1? ALEX CORRETJA: Well, probably if you can stand at the No. 1, it's because you been playing pretty solid and pretty consistent during the year. The rankings are there. I mean, maybe you didn't win the major, but you be playing semis or quarters or finals. Plus then you win Masters Series. So why not? I don't see any reason why you only can be No. 1 if you win a Grand Slam. There are other tournaments are pretty important, too. I believe that if you been playing through the whole year in a good, consistent level, you deserve to be there. I mean, this is something pretty obvious. I'm sure they'll give them the WC. Wow, does that mean there'll be a change for the Spanish DC team? cheering for it to happen. I do read in the spanish news that they are talking about Feli on the team for double, but what about Tommy ? Tommy plays more double than Feli. And I was thinking about some solution for the Spanish team. How bout putting Feli on the team and get Rogi to go as a Feli lookalike, and have Escude dressed up as Juanqui (bcos they look very alike on court)... Pardon my silliness . Oh, now I think about it, maybe Spain really has a shot. Not comparing them to the Frenchies, but how about that Lapentti brothers overcame Rusedski and Henman in Wimbledon in DC 2000. So anything can happen, eh? Just that JC and co won't have 6 weeks to practice on grass, as the Lapentti bros did back then . Vamos Alex! Did he get a WC to the Single too?

Vera! Great idea! Now if only Rogi can learn some Spanish quick [Alex can teach him!], everything will be fine! I guess they felt Feli w be better on grass than Tommy... and no, I don't think Alex got in at all in the singles... but I believe Rafa will be qualifying... so VAMOS ESPANA!!

The translation is bit hard to understand but if I'm not mistaken too badly, I think they gave Alex a WC to the single. I read that on Terra. And also, the WC to the double team for Alex and Feli, is not requested by the players but by the DC team ppl, I think. That they want to see how the 2 play together. Not confirming that Feli will be on the team but certainly a good sign of where he stands on the selection pool.

Yes, Vera, ALEX is in the Madrid tournament!! He's always v popular and they wanted to give him a chance even tho he's been having a BAD season! AND... they are building a grass court somewhere to be ready at the beginning of Nov so the DC team can practise!! So really Feli will not only be the new doubles partner for Alex but also the WC in case the team needs someone other than Juanqui or Carlos to play the 5th rubber... Also Madrid will most likely become a mixed tourney like Miami. VAMOS ALEX!! Alex got a WC in Lyon for next week also!! ALLEZ, ALEX!! people DO want him in their tourney cos he's a good draw...

Thanks for posting the pics, Lee! Corretja wants to regain days of gloryMadrid (dpa) - Armed with a new mobile phone number and the determination to relaunch his career, a beaten but unbowed Alex Correjta would like to regain his days of glory. The Spaniard was number two in the world in 1998, Masters champion that same year, twice a French Open finalist and a Davis Cup winner in 2000. Today he is a humble number 127 in the world rankings in a season featuring a dozen first-round eliminations. But having outlasted his compatriot Rafael Nadal in Madrid on Monday, the Catalan star now believes he can see some light at the end of the tunnel - although he next meets Wimbledon champion and world number three Roger Federer of Switzerland. "This certainly helps. All those months of work, travelling and practising for many hours without gaining any results. I hope that what I achieved today is the start of a recovery," said the 29-year- old For the better part of the 1990's Corretja was one of the most charismatic figures in Spanish tennis. Regarded as a gentleman on the circuit, he was a strong defender of players' rights, a much sought after figure for advertising and an open and friendly partner for the press. But then the disastrous 2003 season arrived. He had already been having trouble leading up to this year, but what then occurred exceeded his worst nightmares - turning from a feared opponent into easy prey. Halfway through the season he decided something drastic had to be done. He dumped his coach of many years, Javier Duarte, and hired Enrique "Bebe" Pérez Cassarino of Uruguay. At just about the same time, his first daughter was born, and those around him began wondering whether tennis was still worth it. Only Corretja himself appeared to have no doubts. "All this work is aimed at me becoming one of the greats again. Otherwise I wouldn't continue playing. I want to continue competing for another three or four years." Apart from his coach, the Spaniard also changed his attitude. "With Duarte the desire was gone. Now, when 'Bebe' tells me after a match that we have to practise, I do what he says. A few weeks ago I finished a match at midnight and we continued to practise for another hour and a half." He has also taken important measures off the court. "I changed my mobile phone number. Now I get fewer calls. Now I have more time for myself." Corretja feels that his problems are more mental than technical. "Sampras and Rafter didn't retire due to problems with their tennis, but rather because they were no longer willing to make the sacrifices which professional tennis requires," he said. Although he would give anything to be part of the Spanish team playing against Australia in the Davis Cup final in Melbourne next month, he says he is resigned to the fact that only Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moyá are assured a spot in the squad. This is why he is playing doubles in Madrid with Feliciano Lopez, seeking an alternative to the partnership with his friend Albert Costa. He admits that going to Australia and playing doubles on grass with a young player like Lopez might be risky, but he still loves the challenge. "But if they should come looking for me, of course I would say yes, because I would love to play another final," said Corretja. [Oh shucks, he changed his mobile number!]
