www.sportsmediainc.com/tennisweek/index.cfm?func=showarticle&newsid=9748&bannerregion=Corretja Downs Defending Champ Grosjean In St. Petersburg By Adrianna Outlaw 10/24/2003 A power outage created a black-out that briefly suspended play in the third set of today's St. Petersburg quarterfinal between Sebastien Grosjean and Alex Corretja. Shortly after play resumed, Corretja extinguished Grosjean's reign as champion, scoring a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) victory to advance to Saturday's St. Petersburg Open semifinals. The two-time French Open finalist will play three-time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten for a place in Sunday's final. The third-seeded Brazilian stopped American Vince Spadea, 6-4, 7-6, in today's opening quarterfinal. A wild card entrant into St. Petersburg, Corretja could be excused for seeking solace in the impending conclusion of an abysmal year. The 29-year-old Spaniard was playing in only his second quarterfinal of the season today. Corretja, who had crashed out of the first or second round 18 times this year, spent the summer stuck in the worst slump of his 12-year career, suffering eight straight setbacks before beating compatriot Rafael Nadal 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in Madrid last week. Seeking to avenge his semifinal loss to Corretja in the 2001 Roland Garros semifinal, the second-seeded Frenchman came out strong to take the first set. A patient Corretja hung tough in the second set, registering two breaks to even the match one set apiece. The pair traded breaks in the final set before Corretja closed it out in the tiebreaker.

Respect for Alex... In July, Alex returned to Kitzbuhel, where he was twice a title winner (2000 & 2002). Despite losing in his opening match, Tournament Director Hellmuth-Dieter Küchenmeister made it clear how much Alex has meant to the tournament in the past few years: "In the most recent past, Corretja and Costa were my favorite players, because they showed that they were always ready to collaborate with the promoter, because we are really in the same boat with the ATP. Players and tournament organizers are sometimes at odds, but generally speaking, we can only advance together. It has not been easy to survive over the past few years: To replace Sampras, and even Agassi is on his way out, even if he has not said so yet. Personalities like Corretja and Costa were important like a bite of bread then, as we tried to advance the sport of tennis together." www.alexcorretja.com

Costa & Corretja Set New World Record! Alex Corretja and Albert Costa etched their names into the record books on Saturday when they played in front of just under 50,000 people at FC Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. The two Spanish stars played a tie-break in the Camp Nou before the start of the crunch soccer match pitting FC Barcelona against bitter rivals Real Madrid. The tie-break, which Corretja claimed 8-6, was watched by 49,913 fans, smashing the tennis crowd attendance record (23,600) previously set in the Arthur Ashe stadium at Flushing Meadows. Both players played with football boots to avoid slipping on the wet surface. The match was organized by the Catalan Tennis Federation, "Double Match" and "Futbol Club Barcelona" in order to commemorate the centennial of the Catalan Tennis Federation. www.fcbarcelona.com/

Alex won his first round quali in Rome but not that spectacular. Here's the report from Rome's web site. www.telecomitaliamasters.com/TelecomMaster/articles.detail.jsp?articleId=63&language=2 Corretja through in festival of unforced errors Former Rome champion Alex Corretja was not tested in his first round qualifying match in what proved to be a festival of unforced errors. The 29-year-old Spaniard, 79 in the ATP rankings, was a break down in both sets before his opponent Karol Kucera (91) collapsed twice, handed him the match 64 64. Both players looked wobbly right from the start. Kucera could not control his powerful serve and lacked confidence at the net. Corretja successfully pinned his opponent to the back of the court with his trademark topspin forehand, but was not happy when given a short ball to finish off. In the first set, Kucera was up 4-2 before losing four straight games thanks to a long string of cringeworthy mistakes. In the second, Kucera seemed to recover a little and started landing volleys. The Spaniard survived two break points in the fifth game but gave the seventh away, only to break back in the eighth with two backhand passes down the line - among the few decent shots of the match. His Slovak opponent, 30 last month, started charging the net late in the match, but the change of tactic did not bring him relief. At 40-love up in the final game, Kucera seemed to lose his bottle again. A double fault gave Corretja match point, anda straightforward backhand volley into the net gave him the match. He will play Christopher Rochus tomorrow.
