Moya cleared of serious injury 2004-01-17 08:35:48 GMT (Reuters) SYDNEY, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Carlos Moya is still hoping to play in next week's Australian Open despite injuring his ankle in Saturday's Sydney International final against Lleyton Hewitt.
The Spaniard was rushed to hospital after rolling his right ankle in the first set, forcing him to retire and handing the title to the Australian.
Doctors initially feared Moya may have fractured his ankle but x-rays cleared him of any breaks. An ATP tennis official later said Moya had a bad sprain.
Moya, who has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the Australian Open after winning last week's Indian Open and reaching the Sydney final, collapsed in agony during the seventh game of the opening set.
He made a vain attempt to continue after strapping the ankle with protective tape but it was clear he was still in pain and he retired after just four more points.
"I wanted to try but I couldn't even walk," Moya said before being whisked to a nearby hospital for x-rays. "I just hope it's not going to be anything really bad.
"It's disappointing but these things happen in tennis."
"I was playing very well, I was very confident and the match was pretty open so it was a pity to end it this way."
Moya, Australian Open runner-up in 1997, is scheduled to play American James Blake in the first round in Melbourne on Monday.

indeed he is trying to play some matches and wait for the result, what will be the effect on his ankle!!! It is only four weeks and such an injury must take time to health totally. He is having some troubles with his ankle, which is normal. He will fellt a long time some troubles when he is doing some particular movements!!!!

Find this in ATPtennis.com
Moya: "My ankle still hurts a bit and it is now three days that I have a bleeding blister on my left foot. I have had them before so I should not be concerned about it, but still I have to take care of it. He played solid with not many mistakes and there is not much I could do today, knowing I played way below my normal level."

Carlos being Careless again. I really can't imagine how he can lost to Labadze And losing 2nd set 1-6, IMO, worse than Rainer losing 1-6 to Arthurs.

moya won acapulco but unfortunately he lost in the second round in indian wells but we all know moya, he is so unpredictable, loosing from a much lower ranked player, how many time did this happened? Too many if you ask me, but how many matches did he won from top ten players??? Soooo many!!!!!!

Hi Charly! I'm a fan too. Let's hope he does well in Miami, especially against Hrbaty, who has for some reason become a very dangerous player. Vamos! I would like to see Carlos vs. Tommy in the next round.

I hope Carles ends the season at least in top 10... I'm afraid his injuries are comming back again... BTW, I was so shocked a couple of weeks ago with ATP Tennis Weekly in ESPN, when they showed how Charlie got his massages and all....He was wearing nothing but a towel...hehe...Luv him. Like JC calls him :"Perrito"
