www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21072065-3162,00.html Players cross the fine lineAUSTRALIAN Open officials have wasted no time in cracking down on unacceptable player behaviour. With the tournament's first round still incomplete, 11 players have been fined after a volatile start to the event. And it appears officials have grown tired of umpires being subjected to outside influences by issuing $2500 penalties to Chile's Paul Capdeville and Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues for receiving illegal coaching. Argentine Juan Monaco and Italian Daniele Bracciali were both given $2500 notices under the same rule, reduced to $1275 on appeal. Frenchman Marc Gicquel was docked $2500 for unsportsmanlike behaviour in his marathon five-set win over Australian Alun Jones, while former finalist Rainer Schuettler was hit with a $1275 fine for the same offence. Russia's 2005 champion Marat Safin lost $630 for racquet abuse with Romanian Edina Gallovits docked the same for ball abuse. Jean-Rene Lisnard (audible obscenity), Mathieu Montcourt (unsportsmanlike) and Alize Cornet (ball abuse) were handed $320 fines.

"Sharapova was last night fined $US2000 for receiving illegal coaching signals from her father Yuri Sharapov during her resilient 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 defeat of Russian compatriot Anna Chakvetadze."

It's nothing, but at least they aren't showing favoritism and letting her off the hook. Like they did with her -- and Serena's -- audible obscenities.
Besides, rich people often HATE losing even $2,000. And Maria is money-mad. I hope it pisses her off.
I don't want her Dad dead, Hurley. Just banned from the stadium when Daughter Dearest plays. He can hang around outside the stadium and listen to her shrieks from there.

Oh my. Serena was just so obnoxious on court, I just couldn't watch! And people complain about Ju's allez' and Maria grunts. The vile looks and words that was coming from Serena was too much for me. It passed competitive into just plain obnoxious. It's one thing to compete like Fed, Ju, Pova etc, but when one starts swearing like crazy and giving the opponents looks from hell (Rod, Serena) it becomes a bit more personal to me. Kinda like "You think you better than me? You little ************? I'm gonna whip you &%&*%^$%" ACE "What you think bout that ^%$&*^(&%^(*)(*. You ^*^&$^***&".lol.
Then they go in the press conferences and talk like they're all sugar and spice.

While I don't like Serena nearly as much as my favorite tennis players over the years, I do like her to a certain degree and have alot of respect for her as a champion and a WTA Tour warrior. I've watched Serena become an all time great tennis player. But her dirty looks to her opponents and salty language on court is something I have never seen in tennis before and makes Maria Sharapova's and Justine Henin's on court antics seem mild by comparison. Maria better be pumped up for the 2007 final against Williams and not back down from Serena at all. On a side note I get a kick out of Serena's press conferences when she says things like" I'm my biggest fan". ;D

Cat, I would be eviscerated, literally. There is no reasoning with the Williams fan. They act like victims all the time. Serena doesn't need defending from that. But if they were the opponent playing Serena and receiving those looks etc, I'm sure they would jump the net and start something.
I think it is a part of Serena's intimidation tactics. Just like at the coin toss where she proceeds to swing her racket over and over , or the virtual growl (gosh I would love for JHH to growl like that.lol), the looks and "cutting of the eye". It really is intimidating. To be honest I would be intimidated. Her whole game and presentation is all about intimidation.
Count how many times I mentioned..intimidation. i think that is a record.

They're definitely intimidation tactics. And, they work. She's not the only one that does it. Maria does. Justine does. Even sweet Kimmie does.
And it works because most tennis girls are poorly adjusted, have no fighting skills amongst no life skills.

LOL@Leelee. You love to exaggerate.lol. No life skills, don't be so hard. But I don't see anyone as intimidating as Serena. Her mere build is intimidating. She's as strong as lion, and roar just as loud. She also believes in herself tremendously and walks the walk. A champion is intimidating. I don't think the men are as intimidated by Fed. But there is something about Serena that scares the living daylights out of them. Maybe it's just because she smacks that ball so hard and hit winners off serve like they are nothing.
KC is intimidating? That's a new one.lol.

Well Lisa fortunately you posted that here about Serena's intimidating ways and not at WTA World. And you're right how the intimidation factor works for Serena and not against her. She was great last night and had Maria on her heels all match. I don't know if Masha was intimidated by Serena's presence. But she had to be intimidated by Serena's overwhelming power and game. And it showed in the Williams d. Sharapova 6-1 6-2 scoreline.

Serena was "swinging" back and forth while waiting to return serve. I remember Henman did something similar at Wimbledon the year LLeyton won and Courier and the commentators gave Tim some shit about it. But of course it AOK with Serena
