what an super claycourt match! Congrats to Rafael for being such a fighter (loved the trumpet in the background, felt like a bullring) and congrats to Mariano for putting up a fight. Great RG finals!

Oh my god I've been reduced to Many congratulations Rafa, a truly worthy winner. I must also commend Mariano Puerta on an excellent effort, I thought it would be one sided, especially after the start Rafa made. And he fought so well in the 4th set, a 5th set would have been fitting but I'm so happy for Rafa. You sobbed? Even i didn't do that ;D

Good effort from Puerta. Too bad he couldn't convert on those setpoints, a 5th set would've been awesome. But Rafa! He played a great tournament, nobody deserved to win more

Hmmm...rarely (never?) have I seen a player play worse on the important points than Puerta today.

Ooh, I'm shocked. Shocked that Puerta got a set off him. Figured that if nobody could out-hit Nadal then nobody could beat him.
Poor Wilander, what records does he have left?

Wilander can hold his head high knowing that he didn't ahve two years to mature on tour before getting to play RG and winning it. Seriously, Wilander winning it on his debut was more impressive in that regard. Is this the best clay season by a player since Muster (Muster's was slightly better, of course)? I don't know Guga's stats, but I imagine he came awfully close to this before?

Actually, Puerta was clearly outhitting him on a number of occasions. It takes more than that to beat Rafa, as I said when you said something similar following his win over Gasquet.

Great final, great stories, great result. Only 2 spoilers:
1. My commentators who questioned when Puerta would get tired from the very start of set 2. Every 2 minutes or so. Maybe even more often.
2. Puerta at the net playing his powder puff volleys. How many points did he lose on them? I cringed everytime he hit them. Oy!

Puerta played very well and the only thing I am disappointed about was that it didn't go 5 sets. Wilander well he won it straight from the juniors in 81 and beat number 2, 3, 4, 5, in the world to win in 82. So he will always have that and it's more impressive in that regard. Nadal deserved it and he hit up with Wilander at RG and with Muster in Rome, the kid knows what's going on.

Of course Wilander's win will always be more impressive, but it's not there anymore. Technically it was wiped out in 95 by Agassi at the AO, but it's getting a lot more hype now. Nadal the wunderkind and all.
I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop here.

Wilander will always be underrated and when people try the Agassi line I just throw the numbers back at them and it shuts them up. Nadal isn't better than Muster, he needs a few Umag titles first.

But having read back, I understand why you asked, lol. That was bloody annoying.
