As usually, Im attending to the Gerdau cup, which is a GB Junior Tournament played in my home town in Brazil, as I can.
I went on Wednesday, but the rain didnt let me see much.
Today, though, I could have fun for both the days.
I got to see all the 8 girls and 4 of the boys in action in the quarters.
I could say I was already impressed with Alisa Kleybanova. She has a lot of power and its amazing how she NEVER hits a ball in the middle of the court, ALWAYS going for a corner. She has loads of power, but needs to improve her serve. Its her weakest point right now.
I also liked a lot Szavay's game. She plays smart, but with a fair amount of power as well.
Alyona Tsutskova was totally ruled by Nadja Pavic, who seems to be a funny person (I saw her talking to her coach, and didnt realize it was the number one seed untill I saw her on court). She is probably one of the most complete players out there.
I saw Craciun play the Under16s final last year against Jenifer Widjaja. She improved a lot from last year, is bigger, and stronger. Still, though, Aleksandra Wozniak is bigger, stronger and more mature. The canadian didnt play that good a match, but enough to win. She reminds me a lot of Davenport playing: seems like she makes no effort at all. Tennis seems so easy when you watch her play!
Now, I was especially amazed by Katerina Bondarenko. She easily outlasted Megan Falcon, who goes home in a bike. The poor girl was on a terrible day, not even a shadow of the one to score a double bagel herself in the first round. Lack of power, direction, and mainly patience. Katerina, though, was almost perfect. Great shots, consistent in all them, gave Megan a terrible time. Im really looking forward to her match with Alisa now.
Also, I could see Zoricic practicing... Promising stuff. Too bad she lost yesterday and I couldnt see her play at all...
In the boys draw I saw Alex Kuznetsov kick Miles Kasiri's butt. Gee, this was a power festival!
I saw Ramirez beat Amado (some parts here and there), but didnt pay enough attention to say something. Can only say that the short Ramirez is devilish. Runs like nuts, never say die attitude.
Then, home boy Leonardo Kirche beat Leandro Migami and kept our hope of a home winner again. I guess the last one was Guga in 94?? Loooong time!
Results
Pavic def. Tsutskova 64 62
Wozniak def. Craciun 62 64
Kleybanova def. Szavay 16 60 61
Bondarenko def. Falcon 60 60
