hi everyone! what a time for rain, eh? and they were showing it too. wonder how long it will last. Rogi's had so many opportunities to close it, but as always He gets too fancy at the big moments and Costa's been at net more than Rogi!

Hi Lily and Nina! So... what are they showing now, Lily, anything, or have they stopped the broadcast altogether? Rogi s not underestimate!! Naughty! We just have to pray that he gets his act together and just wins... [Rogi s just pretend he's playing DC, then he'll win for sure! ]

I think they w have stayed on if the rain wasnt so bad, but then when it really started coming down they went off. It's hard to tell how its gonna be later on. Serving at deuce and then the TB if he gets there. Costa has just been so good!

Lily, I don't mind Costa, but does he have to choose this week to get his form back?! I was thinking about rain yesterday -- guess I shouldn't have! How was Rogi playing overall? Was Costa taking him by surprise or was Rogi just not quite on? He IS still in the doubles and so are Nestor/Knowles and Robredo/Gonzalez -- I like them all! We're cheering for you Rogi!

This is the way i see it....Rogi gets to net, he wins. Rogi stays back, he loses. Its so simple! Why does he stay back? doesnt make any sense.

going back and watching the 3rd set...Rogi serving at 3-2 was just an incredible game. At deuce, he serves and volleys and Costa makes him hit about 5 amazing volleys and then when he wins the point he does one of those high fist pumps! I dont think i've ever seen him show emotion like that and then on the next point Costa returns the serve so fast, as Rogi reaches to get it he falls down! but he smiles showing he's ok. and then the last point was just incredible shotmaking by both guys w Rogi winning it. That woke the crowd up. still raining?

I don't know how many people have seen the match, but yesterday Costa was making a good claim to inheriting Tim Henman's skills in the volley department, it was just unreal - backhand volleys picked off his toes, sliced approaches, superb half-volleys. He did come to the net a little less often than Roger, but he won a higher percentage of points and he's been doing it more in the tournament overall of the two players.
It is of course a very good tactic, because a) serve-volleyers are always successful against Roger through getting to the net first (his records against Henman, Escude, Rafter etc. testify to this) and b) in these windy and overcast conditions it is much harder to try and pass someone from the baseline.
The commentators also made the telling observation that both players have only been broken serving from one end, against the wind, and naturally that would have to be the end where Roger was serving for the match at 5-4.... I could have sworn Costa's return was out on one of those matchpoints, but that's probably wishful thinking.
The crowd are behind Costa too, as the determined and persistent underdog he's really endeared himself to them. Roger needs better serving, better footwork and, in conditions like this, the ability to grind out wins - that's something that has undoubtedly separated the two so far. Costa will certainly have earnt this victory if he does get it today, but Federer will rue those missed opportunities. If he's going to win, he has to forget about them and play the best five minutes of tennis he's ever played.

Sjengster! I thank you for the details of a match I won't see. I keep thinking how Rogi blew it yesterday when he could have been sitting pretty now! I wondered about the pro-Spanish crowd [although from what you say it was more a pro-underdog crowd]. Do you think Rogi underestimated Costa? Sometimes he and, more often, Juanqui, do this... to their peril! All we can hope for is that Rogi gets his act together physically and more importantly, MENTALLY or he's out, on his butt! HOPP, ROGI!! I can't stand the thought of Rogi out to Costa, who is obviously playing well and fighting, as the Spanish do! When Albert's on a roll, OJO! [Hope I haven't thrown you off course in our Tennis History, btw.]

BLOW by BLOW! Thursday, 27 March, 2003, 19:38 GMT Game-by-game: Costa v Federer Latest: Costa 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-5 Third set Costa 6-5/deuce Federer The rain finally hits as the match draws towards its climax. Federer looks in trouble when he hits two volleys long to fall 0-30 down. But the Swiss composes himself and pulls himself back to deuce before play is suspended with the rain making the court too slippery. Costa 6-5 Federer The momentum is now with the Spaniard, and he confidently holds to make Federer serve to stay in the match. Costa 5-5 Federer Federer blows two match-points and is broken as Costa puts him under pressure with some fine play. Costa 4-5 Federer Costa holds to love with a perfect serve-volley style that would suit him if he chose to play at Wimbledon. But Federer will now serve for the match as the clouds gather overhead. Costa 3-5 Federer Federer plays a solid, composed service game, holding to 15 to move within a game of the match. Costa 3-4 Federer Costa keeps the pressure on Federer, who has been accused of succumbing to nerves in the past. Costa 2-4 Federer The Swiss wins a hugely tense game which swings first one way and then the other. Costa earns two break-points at 15-40, but Federer finds his range on serve and eventually holds after several deuces. Costa 2-3 Federer Federer makes Costa pay for a couple of early errors. A poor lob and a mistimed backhand from the Spaniard give Federer a 0-30 lead, and the Swiss keeps the pressure on and breaks with a brilliant passing shot. Costa 2-2 Federer Both players are producing fine tennis as the match heads towards its climax. Federer levels the match which is now too tight to call. Costa 2-1 Federer Costa wins a marathon point at 30-15 with an inspired backhand down the line and then serves out for the first hold of the set. Costa 1-1 Federer The Spaniard looks a different player as he pounces on the Federer serve to break straight back. He clinches the break by coming into the net and volleying a clean winner. Costa 0-1 Federer Costa hands Federer the advantage straight away with a poor service game. His movement and strokes seem sluggish as Federer breaks to 15. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second set Costa 4-6 Federer Federer levels the match with a solid hold. He fires down his ninth ace of the match to earn three set-points and takes the game at the second time of asking. Costa 4-5 Federer Two questionable line-calls go against Federer as Costa holds to love, and the Swiss will now have to make sure the disappointment does not get to him mentally as he serves for the set. Costa 3-5 Federer Federer throws in a double-fault, but serenely moves to within a game of the set. He puts in a delicate drop-shot on game-point as his confidence grows. Costa 3-4 Federer Costa determinedly wins a key point with Federer at the net. The Spaniard has to hit four massive forehands before he can pass Federer, but then goes on to hold. Costa 2-4 Federer Federer remains on top and is giving Costa few chances to get at him on serve. Costa 2-3 Federer Costa has to produce some of his best tennis to stay in contention as Federer starts to attack everything. But the Spaniard holds to 30. Costa 1-3 Federer The Swiss keeps his momentum going and heaps the pressure on Costa. Costa 1-2 Federer Federer brings up three break-points with an athletic overhead on the stretch, and Costa then hits a forehand long to give the Swiss the early advantage in the second set. Costa 1-1 Federer Federer responds in kind, and allows no chances as he levels the set. Costa 1-0 Federer The Spaniard carries his from straight into the second set, and holds with ease. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First set Costa 7-6 Federer Scoring goes with serve until Federer hits a forehand just long to fall 5-3 down. Costa then serves out to take a tight first set. Costa 6-6 Federer Costa dumps an easy drop-shot into the net at 40-15, but maintains his composure to force a tie-break. Costa 5-6 Federer After all the hard work of breaking back, Federer finds himself break-point down once more. But he plays three composed points to inch in front. Costa 5-5 Federer Costa saves three more break-points, but Federer finally makes the breakthrough at the fourth time of asking, his ninth of the set. But he needs a huge slice of luck to do it as a cruel net-cord prevents Costa from putting away an easy volley. Costa 5-4 Federer Federer does well to battle back from 0-30 down to make Costa serve out for the set. Both players are changing their games up and making forays into the net. Costa 5-3 Federer The Spaniard is playing with confidence and continues to dominate. Costa 4-3 Federer Federer continues to struggle, but manages to hold his serve. He even misses what looks like a straight-forward overhead. Costa 4-2 Federer It all seems to be going Costa's way now, and he holds again, even pulling out an unlikely, low volleyed winner. Costa 3-2 Federer Costa shows his Swiss opponent the error of his ways by breaking at the first time of asking. He does it by forcing a backhand error out of Federer after a long and tense rally. Costa 2-2 Federer Costa again shows his battling qualities as he saves three more break-points. Federer rips a brilliant backhand winner down the line to set up the second, but he seems a little tentative on his chances to break. Costa 1-2 Federer Federer fails to show the fluency of his first service game, missing a number of first serves. But the variation on his second-serve helps him complete the hold. Costa 1-1 Federer Costa digs himself out of trouble, saving two break-points, but he needs a lucky net-cord to win the second. Costa 0-1 Federer Federer breezes through his first service game, holding to love, and landing his first ace of the match. source: news.bbc.co.uk/

Rogi! This was not a good tournament... oh well, guess Costa's just unstoppable... he better get to the final now... might as well be an all-Spanish one! Why not? Bet the crowd was on his side too. Rogi -- time to get your pretty head examined... you did not regroup as we told you to... Go and win the doubles now.

I promised I wouldn't overreact, but when you find out he had another matchpoint in the tiebreak... For the life of me, I can't actually remember what happened on those two matchpoints at 5-4 yesterday. I think Roger ended up making errors on both, but having said that both times Costa got good, penetrating returns back in court and made him play. I'll wait until I see the tiebreak to see if he really choked, however, as some are claiming; if he missed some sitters and short balls then I'll agree, but that was an incredibly gutsy match from Costa, and I'm sure he was solid on the big points. My only big hope is that Roger uses this loss to spur him on, especially for Davis Cup - and the great benefit is that, even though the claycourt season is coming up, he doesn't exactly have much to defend from either Monte Carlo or Rome, unlike his nearest rival in the rankings, Roddick. Personally, if El Aynaoui can't beat Senor Skinhead, then I hope he gets past Costa and into the final - and that Srichaphan wins the other semi. Then we will have a very interesting rematch of that Wimbledon drubbing last year, hopefully with the same result....

I on the other hand w like an all-Span final but that w be asking for too much! Now if Paradorn could humiliate Baldy, now, that w be worth watching! Of the men left, who is playing the best? Costa is looking good. Moya and Paradorn both struggled in their QFs -- I was surprised Carlos won. Rogi really really needs to get his head together -- he can't continue to lose to people he normally beats. Pretty soon everyone will pray to meet him! Come on, Rogi, you're better than that! Don't take your incredible talent for granted -- that's a big mistake! He still needs to be more aggressive -- he kind of plays too timidly sometimes and without real confidence. I was hoping that Rogi w beat AA in the semis so he can consolidate his win and gain true confidence, which w propel him forward by leaps and bounds! But now all that is but a dream... He has to focus on doubles now, then DC -- a ton of pressure on Rogi once again w Micha injured! Talk about inopportune! Well, off to lunch and watch Serena blast Kim off the court... on my timed tape!
