Okay, now I officially don't like Costa. First he beats Guga at RG and now Rogi in Miami. but I have to give him credit and I think that line, "The Spaniard is playing with confidence and continues to dominate" pretty much sums up the whole match. There was a lot Rogi could do, but he didnt do it. So many opportunities wasted. Rogi's best five minutes of tennis will have to wait. They decided to torture us and show some of the 3rd set TB. Starting at 4-4 w Costa serving, Rogi tries to take the BH up the line, ball goes out 4-5 Rogi serves Great 1st serve out wide then hits a cross court FH winner 5-5 Rogi serves Good 1st serve. Costa return goes long and Rogi shouts, Come on! Match point! 5-6 Costa serves long baseline rally, both guys playing very safe! Rogi nets a FH. (Rogi stays back, loses point!) 6-6 Costa serve long rally, Rogi way behind the baseline! (Guga-like!) and Costa steps in w a FH winner. 6-7 Rogi serve another long rally, a knifed BH from Rogi w Costa's ball going out 7-7 Rogi serve another long rally (come in anytime Rogi!) Costa's ball clips the net, sits up and Rogi hits it long- a look of disbelief from Rogi, he knows... 8-7 Costa serve Match Point! Cross court rally, Rogi steps in, tries to take the ball early, ball hits the net and goes long. Match over. So another learning experience for Rogi. So many shots, so much talent, but has trouble closing out matches, gets nervous on match points, stays back when he s be getting to net! I wonder what he'll say about this. Now I can support Rogi and Max in doubles. Go Rogi and Max! Great win today! Carlos and Paradorn s be fun. Dont think they've played before. Funny how both of them beat AA last year so theres still hope!

Well, we didn't see a nanosecond of Rogi at all... was supposedly a tight, exciting match! Rogi, you have to really WANT it, baby! Costa is playing well... watch out! But he never beats AA... there's always a first time... I want an all-Span final. Moya easily crushed Paradorn! WoW!. Now he's a guy who has actually beaten Baldy... if AA doesn't make it to Sun... w be a good one! If AA does... I'll cheer for Carlos! [better tell my Mom, she likes Carlos!] And cheering for Rogi/Max -- who do they play next? Robredo/Gonzo?? I won't be around tomorrow so I have to time the Wom Final... Jen-Jen pls win!!

oh yeah, this is kinda funny, at the beginning of Rogi/Costa, Cliffy is saying whos playing and so he says, Albert Costa of Spain and Roger Federer of the USA. Did he not realize what he was saying or did he say that so the average stupid Amer w stick around to watch. Should i say Go Carlos! or what's the point? Some things in this world just seem to go together and AA winning in Miami is one of them.

Here's the article: NASDAQ-100 OPEN MIAMI MARCH 29, 2003 Federer/Mirnyi Win First Masters Series Doubles Crown Semifinalists from last year go two better in 2003. Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Roger Federer now has five career doubles titles, three with Max Mirnyi. Making up for a disappointing singles quarterfinal in which Roger Federer lost to Spaniard Albert Costa despiting holding three match points, Federer and partner Max Mirnyi won their first Tennis Masters Series doubles title Saturday at the NASDAQ-100 Open, one year after reaching the semifinals here. It is the most prestigious doubles title to date for this particular pair, who won ATP titles in Rotterdam and Moscow last year and reached the final at the 2002 Pacific Life Open, while going 16-4 on the year as a duo. Mirnyi also won the US Open doubles crown with partner Mahesh Bhupathi in 2002. The 6-foot-1 Federer and the 6-foot-5 Mirnyi overpowered the smaller team of Leander Paes and David Rikl, breaking Paes/Rikl at 6-5 to win the first set and breaking again early in the second en route to the straight set win 7-5, 6-3. Paes and Rikl were fortunate to reach the final, having come back from down a set and a break to Mike and Bob Bryan in Friday night's semifinal. To reach the final, Federer/Mirnyi defeated the top seeded team of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 6-3, 6-4, and later in the day Fernando Gonzalez and Tommy Robredo by the same score. "Having a partner like Roger is a big deal. He's a guy who understands what you need to do to win, even if it means playing two matches in one day like we did on Friday because of the rain," said Mirnyi. "We were both fit enough to play three matches in two days and we didn't exert ourselves too much since we won both in straight sets." "It's great for us to win because it's one of the biggest tournaments on tour and it's Roger's first Tennis Masters Series wins. It's the big ones like this that you always remember," said Mirnyi. source: www.atptennis.com

Translation from article in Sonntagszeitung:
"He has chances to become number 1"
Peter Lundgren believes Roger Federer can land a big coup anytime - especialli in Wimbledon
From Rene Stauffer
Miami - Roger Federer had hardly time to be angry about his missed semifinal agains Andre Agassi. Despite after 3 matchpoinst lost quarterfinal agains Albert Costa (6:7, 6:4 6:7) he still played two doubles on friday, won both and eached the final. That's why he won't retour to Europe before Monday, where he'll Play DC quarterfainal in Toulouse agains France from friday on. Despite the meniscusinjury from Michel Kratochvil the Baselbieter travels optimistic to France. "I'm used to be under pressure" he says. "It's a pitty especially for Micha." Also his Coach, the 37 year old swedisch ex professional Peter Lundgren places his sights to the front.
Peter Lundgren, how do you describe the match agains Costa who was interrupted thursday becouse of the rain where Federer was two points away from loosing in the third set.
He fought, gave everything. But also he can lose, everone can lose. There are so many good players and Costa was playing strong. The conditions with the stormy wind were difficult. Roger missed a lot of breakchances in the first set, lost it, played good in the second and not bad in the third.
Did he play "right" in the difficult situations on friday? The two points to level it 6:6 and the beginning of the tb were good. But then he also was missfortunate: Costas ball toched the net at mp and landed in the field, Rogers ball at the oposite touched the net and went out. Of course there he made some errors but he was at least risking something. He's been playing constantly good this year, he's on the right trak. I'm not disappointed.
And he was he very disappointed? After such a game a player has to be disappointed. But he's getting over losses pretty quick and is used to learn from it and to look ahead.
A year ago he won 7 matches at the TMS tournaments in Indian Wells and key Biscane, now only 4 your verdict?
Indian Wells was though, as he had hardly a break after his win in Dubai, before he went to California. And Kuerten was playing good against him. In Miami he was solid. he could have won against Costa - and nobody knows what would have happened in the semis against Agassi afterwards.
Federer already played 30 singles this season, more than anybody else. Could these use of energy pay off?
This is a pleasant Problem. As lon as he wins it's ok. But we have to listen to the signals of his body. Now there's an other strong period coming up with DC and the clay season with tournaments in Monte Carlo, Munich, Hamburg, Rome and the French open. There's hardly any time to prepare the clayseason and to relax.
A lot of topplayers don't play DC. Could these be a subject too?
So far DC was an important and positive thing for him. Usually he plays better afterwards and he likes to be part of the team. Maybe we have to drop an other tournament later on in the year.
As number 4 everybody expects big wins from Federer now. How is he dealing with the bigger pressure?
So far pretty good. He beats most of the players he should beat. The people are talking a lot - but the difference between the Nr. 1, 5 or 10 are very small, all are pretty close together. We musn't listen to what the others say.
He himself is saying, that he feels ready to win a very big tournament and to enter the fight for the nr. 1 at the end of the year, when he's playing good the upcomming months. What do you say to this=
For sure. He's been playing on a very high level for two years and that on every surface. I already said at the beginning of the year: He has a good chance to become nr. 1. It could be in two years, in three in one.... who knows? If he wants it, he for sure can reach it. He's such a good player. And he want's it.
Some criticise him for not having won a Grand-Slam-Tournament yet. Could this become a burden?
He's not the only top player in this situation. Roger's potential is so big, it needs time to really compleat it and to perfectionise his tennis. I believe he's now strong enough and ready. It could happen anytime. But it needs a bit of luck as well.
Where is he most dangerous?
Regarding the Grand Slams: Wimbledon. I like the way he plays on grass, grass suits him. When he has a good start to the tournament overlasts the first two rounds he'll be growing as a player. But he's dangerous on clay too, he's proven that in Hamburg.
Last year he lost first round in Paris and Wimbledon. Are you going to change something in the preparation?
He'll be resting the week before Wimbledon not playing in Rosmalen (Sorry for all dutsch fans - my sidenote) Otherwise everything stays the same.
Has your work as a coach changed due to the success?
It became easier, to get training courts. Plus he's mainly playing on the big courts. That makes everything easier.
On which parts of his games are you working especially?
On the retourn and the serve. These parts he has to improve. The retourn could become more constant and sometimes he has to be more agressive. And his serve could be 5 to 10 kmh faster. That's not a question of the technique but of the mental attitude. He has to serve harder knowingly.
What makes him so strong?
That he's a very good allroundplayer. He's wearing down his opponents, and when the important points are comming he wins them most of the time. But he's still so young and can improve a lot even his forehand and backhand.
During the last months also besides the courts a lot of things were going on. Federer sepearated from the Agency IMG and made a new clothing deal. You you find it good that he organised his "entourage" new, without a profecional manager?
I'm not interfering in his finaciall matters. He want's to make things more privatly, that's fine for me. I think he's satisfied now. I'm glad that the contrct is fixed and that he's having his head free for tennis. There were also other things who preoccupied him like the death of Peter Carter.
You now longer belong to the Swiss Davis-Cup-Team this year but still folow it carefully. What do you think the team is able to in Toulouse?
I think also without Kratochvil the team has a chance to win. Marc has a lot of experience and is a good server.
You would nominate Rosset, the captain, as a singles player?
When you're asking me now yes. George Bastl hasn't been playing so good this season. And the circumstances in Toulouse suit more Marc.
Your 7 year old doughter is suffering from diabetes since last fall. How's the situation?
Julia needs 6 injektions daily, the bloodsugarlevel has to be checked 3-4 times a day. That's a lot of work, changing the live compleately for her and for us.
Can you still be 40 weeks away as a coach?
It's not easy but no job is perfeckt. I have the chance to work with a great player and one has to take it when you get it. I don't see my family each day, but when I'm home then I'm there for them.
Federer is meanwhile earing a lot of money. Do you as a coach also profit from his success?
When he's playing good I get a bonus. It shall be like that. But money was never the motive or the aim of my work.

Danke, Doris! You don't always have to translate the whole article for us but you are a detail-oriented person [like me!] and I see you prefer to see the whole picture! Interesting... I wonder about not playing Rosmalen though... I w prefer if Rogi skipped some clay tournament [Munich?] rather than grass, since there is only one other week to play on it: Halle. Back to WORK!

Federer targets grand slam glory over Cup win
By Pritha Sarkar
LONDON, April 1 (Reuters) - Roger Federer will be carrying the weight of a nation when he spearheads Switzerland's Davis Cup campaign against nine-times champions France in the quarter-finals this weekend.
But the country's legion of fans travelling to Toulouse will be disappointed to learn that Cup success is not topping their hero's priority list this year.
"I'd rather win a slam (than the Davis Cup) because I travel on my own all year and in the end I'm playing an individual sport," the Swiss number one told Reuters in an interview.
"My dream as a boy was always to win a slam and become number one in the world.
"Davis Cup victory will be unbelievable too but at the moment I'm not really focusing on winning the Davis Cup. It's out of reach for the moment but the further we go, it will be a good achievement for us Swiss.
"So the grand slams are definitely my priority."
The 21-year-old Federer is enjoying his best start to an ATP season since turning professional in 1998 and desperately wants to fulfil the potential he displayed when he sensationally knocked out defending champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2001.
During a three-week stint in February, he lifted the Marseille and Dubai Opens, suffering his only defeat in the semi-finals of the World Indoor Tournament in Rotterdam.
MEMORABLE WIN
But he remains frustrated with his inability to build on his grand slam breakthrough almost two years since that memorable win over Sampras.
In fact, Wimbledon proved to be a major heartache last year as Federer failed to negotiate a first-round encounter against unheralded Croatian qualifier Mario Ancic.
Although he won three titles in 2002, including his first Masters crown in Hamburg, the popular Swiss failed to capitalise on that form during the slams.
Having reached the last eight at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros in 2001, fourth-round appearances at the Australian and U.S. Opens was the best he could manage in the grand slams 12 months later.
However, instead of dwelling on his failures, the gifted Swiss was keen to point out the successes he experienced during 2002.
"People always expect a lot from me...but for me it was such a breakthrough and a nice feeling to be in the top 10..it was a dream come true but I just had problems (in the slams).
"My goal for the end of the season was to be in the top 10 and make the Masters (Cup). In the end I achieved all my goals as I won three titles and a Masters.
"The only dream I didn't fulfil was to win a grand slam but I was far away from doing that."
TOP SPOT
With his reputation growing amongst his peers, talk of Federer claiming the top spot has been gaining momentum over the past few months.
He has improved his year-end ranking every season since 1997 and having started the year as the sixth best player in the world, Federer enjoyed a career-high fourth place in the standings last month before slipping back to fifth this week.
"My goal is to stay in the top five for the next few months (as) I have a lot of points to defend till Hamburg (in May)," said Federer.
"If I can keep my ranking till Hamburg then I think I've played well.
"After that I will have a lot of opportunities to go further in the summer as I had a very difficult period around then last year.
"We can speak about the number-one ranking after Hamburg again, till then I just want to play well and have a good start to the year again."
Despite his personal goals, Federer acknowledged the positive role that the Davis Cup had played in his career.
"Playing Davis Cup has helped me to improve my image so playing for Switzerland is always an advantage for me," Federer said ahead of the daunting task of trying to overhaul Guy Forget's French team, who have reached the final three times over the past four years.
With Switzerland, finalists in 1992, looking to land their first title, Federer will spearhead a team also comprising Ivo Heuberger and George Bastl. Swiss number two Michel Kratochvil has been ruled out of the tie, which starts on Friday, after injuring his knee in training.
"You can see that we have a lot of fans travelling out of Switzerland with us for the Davis Cup and I don't have that for me at the grand slams," Federer added.
"If we win the whole thing it will be unbelievable."

Hey, great article, Lily! Thanks! Rogi has been steadily improving every year so he's on the right track -- genius and artistry cannot be rushed along! What he says about the Swiss fans -- interesting! So, you see, Rogi needs his cheering section at every tournament! If I win the lottery, I'd be there, believe me! Hope Rogi knows how much support he has all over the world! All the best for the Swissies!
