FINALLY a game!! 17:04 : Roger races to the net and putaway two volleys... GAME 6-6... TIE-BREAK 17:04 : Federer is still fighting... he breaks a string and goes to his bag, pulling out another racket... 40-30! Not the best time for that to happen to him... as a result he double faults on his game point... Mantilla two points away 17:00 : Mantilla is inspired and raises his game... 6-5... one away from the title. He pumps his fist as Federer frames out OK ROGI, concentrate!! Do it!!

17:10 : Roger makes it 4-3 with a backhand winner cleaning the line... a great scramble, sees Federer cover 20 yards, from one corner of the court to the net 5-3; Mantilla serving again... he gets one back for 4-5
17:09 : FEDERER attacks again and a clever one-two of serve and putaway off the short return, sees the pair change ends at 3-3... the crowd are loving this battle
17:08 : Mantilla pounds down an unreturnable for 2-2; his next serve reaches Federer two yards bhind the baseline... long rally and FEDERER frames out... he brates himself... FELIX 3-2
17:06 : Antoher example of clinical volleying and it's 2-1 FEDERER
17:05 : Mantilla hits his first serve shot and Federer races to the net to putaway the volley 0-1; Federer hits short as well and Felix levels with a fine forehand winner 1-1
KEEP GOING!! COME ON, ROGI!! WIN THIS SET!! Imperative!

MP Mantilla I think

Post by RogiFan on May 11, 2003 10:12:44 GMT -5
17:14 : FEDERER hangs in as Mantilla's exhuberance costs him big time... the pair change ends in this tie-break for a second time level at 6-6
17:13 : Federer clearly annoyed overcooks a backhand across court wide... 5-5... MANTILLA SETS UP MATCH POINT with a great run to a short ball, that he forces back deep, leaving Federer scrambling to reach it... he doesn't!
17:12 : 5-4: Federer his his first serve out... Mantilla returns the second deep... there's a cal of "OUT" he asks the umpire to investigate... ... he heads for the net to argue with the umpire... Federer hands on hips waits patiently... point to be played again!
NO< can't be MP!!

Mantilla won 10-8 in the tiebreak..
It's really sad, but it's great for Felix who wins his first Masters Series title! It should give him confidence for Roland Garros.. As for Roger, he has a really tough first round next week against Mirnyi, so I hope he can come through....
Felix has the possibility to play against Hewitt in the third round in Hamburg! I hope he can beat him!
GO GUGAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

POOR ROGI... He just wasn't on today and you know he didn't look as great this tourney as he did in Hambrug last yr... he has done well so far this yr and all credit to FELIX... felicitaciones! He deserved to win today. Well, Rogi, all the way to the end only to lose to a hot player -- can't win them all. Rogi gets lots of pts anyway and hope he won't be too spent for next week -- it's v important for him to do half decent -- but must be v tired... s not have played dbles, IMO. Good thing is that ROGI goes up to #3 and pushes Schuettler down -- finally! Great work Felix! Rogi and Juanqui have closed the gap w AA -- less than 100 pts!! In the right direction!

Too bad Roger!!
Well looks like it's been paying off now that you don't use ure chances!! (It had to pay off once as one can't always be lucky!)
Hope you'll work on this!! Gee so many set points or bp you didn't make!!
O.K.
Hope you'll be able to get your rest tomorrow and then be ready for Hamburg!!
Allleeezzzz Roger!!

This is not a time to be sad. Disappointed but not sad. Like RF said, just not Rogi's day. I was thinking if Rogi wins this it will be a miracle...if Felix wins he w have totally deserved it. So congrats to Felix. He did everything right today and Rogi did just about everything wrong. According to Eurosport comm, he was standing SO FAR behind the baseline and not going to net. And the number of break chances are another story. He did good in bringing it to a TB, but the cat wanted his catnip! sorry, its just that the one match we're getting of Rogi and he loses! #3 is great! I'm still so impressed by how well he's doing this year. and now he plays Max 1st rd in Hamburg?! maybe this time he can beat him.

Rogi did look tired since Volandri match... He did well to make the finals even though IMO was not 100% and sharp this week. OTOH [on the other hand] Felix looked pretty good vs. Kafel! Lots of net play too! And fit as a fiddle and not tired at all! Another week of tough tennis to come... Can I take it?? Don't like the draw much...

I do not want a 1st rd loss -- could be fatal! [OK I exaggerate!] Now I forget what I was going to say... Oh yes... I noticed he didn't play much at the net this week... at least the matches I saw... in fact I noticed that Juanqui played a v effective dropper that took Rogi by surprise!! Maybe Rogi wasn't concentrating for some reason... Do respectably well next wk, pls, ROGZ!!

Rogi was gracious in defeat acc to Sp papers and said that Felix was a deserving winner! That's nice of him! Did you know Felix was 1st unseeded player to win ROMA? Did I mention that here or elsewhere?! And 2 yrs ago that honour was accorded to another Armada guy -- Juanqui! [bet he was happy about today's results!]

I already mentioned this on the Ferrero forum, but destiny seems to be on Mantilla's side this week - he had a couple of his shots called out that were overruled and called in, one on breakpoint down in the third set and the other at 4-5 down in the tiebreak. And yesterday against Kafelnikov he was serving for the match at 5-4, 30-30, and had another shot that was called out reversed and called in, giving him matchpoint when he would have been down breakpoint!

Always gracious in defeat. I read somewhere that after the Volandri match, Rogi acknowledged how well he'd played. Real class! Dont think you mentioned that here..Felix being 1st unseeded player...good for him. It doesnt seem like its been 2 yrs since Juanqui won. He also really deserved it that day. To beat Guga on clay was tough. well, it was then!
