Swiss Open expected to continue despite funding blow Posted: Monday March 10, 2003 8:41 PM Updated: Monday March 10, 2003 8:41 PM
GSTAAD, Switzerland, March 10 (Reuters) -- The Swiss Open will go ahead as planned this year despite the withdrawal of funding from the Gstaad sport and tourism board, organizers said on Monday.
The future of the July 5-13 ATP event is safe even though it will no longer receive cash from the department of sport, culture and tourism, tournament director Jacques Hermenjat said.
"We are convinced everything will go ahead. The backing from title sponsor Allianz and sponsors Swisscom and USM means the tournament will be held again in July," Hermenjat said.
Hermenjat did not say how much money the funding had represented.
Swiss No. 1 Roger Federer is the first big name to be confirmed for the tournament in his homeland.
Spaniard Alex Corretja claimed the title last year after overcoming Argentine Gaston Gaudio in the final.

It's only an hour's drive from here, and the place is fab, so if i'm not too busy, i'll definitely go. Tickets in the first few days are cheaper, and you have access to the 2 courts and you can see everyone. The players even walk on the streets and sit in the restaurants and nobody really ogles at them.

Maybe I'll be able to get a day off work and I'll have a chance to visit this tournament too.

;D lol RogiFan
TeleBärn is a local tv station that covers the Bernese region. They have features on the tournament and they even had Marc Krippendorf (Bernese player, tennis pro , Navratilova's former hitting partner) doing it.
Did you know that Heinz Günthard is now Jelena Docic's coach?

I didn't know that... he was Steffi's old coach right? Dokic needs a good coach for sure! Are you still going to RG this year? and Gstaad? They better still have it or Alex won't be able to win it again!!

I'll decide on RG in May, the start of our Interclub tournaments which requires my omnipresence at the tennis club, but i could probably sneak out to Paris on a Monday morning then come back Wednesday evening. It's a matter of organizing somebody to take over in those 2 days. The other hitch is i'm getting a new set of wheels for my business, and it will be delivered sometime in May. But i'll work something out. Definitely Gstaad! I've convinced hubby to do these tennis escapades and he's happy about it, as long as it fits his schedule, it's affordable and it's nearby. Heck, we only live once, at least i can say that in my lifetime i've watched the best players on the planet!

There will be 6 top ten players in Basel.
Besides Roger Federer also Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya, Andy Roddick, and the Gauchos Guillermo Coria and title holder David Nalbandian have already signed in for the event. So did the youngster Raffael Nadal. After Wimbledon the entrylist will be compleated.

I guess Alex has not committed to Gstaad or Kitz cos of his baby... due in JULY... too bad, they loved him so much last yr, it was great for him! Oh well, the baby is more important -- they already know it's a girl... her name will be AROA.

Well Gstaad is around the corner.... ....so here's the link www.swissopengstaad.chwell the first WC went to Marc Rosset. And should Michel not make it to the entrylist he'll get the second one. As for the last remaining they'll decide just shortly before the Allianz Swiss Open starts. Maybe they'll give it to Alex (when he's able to leave his wife and doughter alone already) or then to a surprise guest from the row of swiss players. Stanislas Wawrinka has good chances too ( I for shure wouldn't mind if he gets it.... hey I mean he just beat Richard Gasquet on clay... so he may have good chances as he's not playing Wimby.)

Some news re: Gstaad03 Alex and Marta Welcome New Baby! Alex Withdraws From Wimbledon; Will Play Gstaad Alex and his wife, Marta, became parents for the first time on June 19 with the arrival of daughter, Aroa, who was born in Barcelona. She weighs 3 kilos, and "everything went perfect," said Ivan Corretja, Alex's brother and manager. "Aroa and Marta are now resting a little bit. Alex is very, very happy. A funny coincidence, Alberto Berasategui, Alex's closest friend also had his second child tonight." Baby Aroa was supposed to arrive on July 4, but came early. Alex was eager to play at Wimbledon, but the premature birth of Aroa has required a change in his calendar: "My preparation for Wimbledon was very good, but it has been truncated with the early birth of my daughter," Alex said. Alex will play next in Gstaad, where he has received a wild card. source www.alexcorretja.com/default2.aspRoger Federer will be looking for his first ever title on Swiss soil when he takes on a world-class field at the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad, 5-13 July, 2003. Spanish star Juan Carlos Ferrero and Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian are scheduled to play, and last year's champion Alex Corretja hopes to defend his title if circumstances permit. The popular 29-year-old Spaniard may be prevented from competing for the best possible reason - he is set to become a father around the time of the event he has won three times. Corretja promised that if he is available to play an event though, he will definitely be coming to Gstaad. The Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad will be the first opportunity this year for Swiss fans to see Federer at home, despite his Davis Cup heroics in the Netherlands and France, and the 21-year-old is determined to give them something to cheer about. "It's always special to play in Gstaad because I think the fans enjoy it when they see me play at home," said Federer. "For me, Gstaad is a beautiful tournament up there in the mountains. I've lost enough times early on and I know that, if I play well, I can make great results right from the first round to the final." The Swiss number one began his professional career in Gstaad in 1998, and didn't win a match until he reached the second round last year after beating Hicham Arazi, but he is determined to put that right this time. "My confidence on clay is much bigger than it used to be when I first came on tour and it would be something special to win there. Any final in Switzerland is something special and I'd love to break through in Gstaad." source swissopengstaad.ch/en/turnier/index_sidestories.html ooh I wish I could go!!

Hopefully the Swissies won't draw each other in the opening rounds like they (almost) did last year :red: Fed can have the title, but Marc, Stani, Micha -- the others need some decent results!

I agree last year was almost a disaster
I hope it'll tourn out like two years ago where there was a swiss in each quarter!!
But guess we won't be that lucky again...
