Do you suppose Chak got sent to the parking lot because nobody can pronounce her surname? Pretty much. They schedule the Williamses and Sharapova by TV coverage and throw around the rest randomly.

Azarenka ripped Cibulkova a new one.
Only question about the match against Hingisova is how hard will Vika choke.

As robotic brainless ball bashers go, how consistent is Azarenka? I've never seen her play Not much. Her range can go completely away and she's a major league choker mentally brittle, so she can throw away sets and matches apparently out of the blue. Game has surface similarities with Sharapova's (much the same shriek, controlled aggression, good serve, solid BH), but Vika has become a tad more versatile as of late. Seem from up close, her hitting is very impressive - particularly when you notice by how little her shots clear the net, and how close to the baseline they land.

Vak really torched Kostanic ... 2 and 1 ... Vak has a possible match against Srebotnik/Kirilenko next, too ... And Paszek d. Schiavone 3 and 5. Well done! She faces Patty next. That is so winnable, but she might not ... Meanwhile, Rodionova has built a 3-1 early lead against Nadia. And Canas is gone.

Azarenka's trashed both her opponents so far, and only one of them was useless. It'd be a terrible loss for Hingis, which is why I fully expect it. Agh, Kata is down a set to Kirilenko. I have just had a terrible thought, what if SHE is the surprise semi-finalist?? With Petrova struggling against A-Rod, Sweater losing sets to Cammie Pan, and Martina sucking generally...Jesus, it could actually happen

Post by Grarliner on Aug 30, 2007 14:22:35 GMT -5
Is it just me, or has Andy's game gotten a lot less aggressive/more consistent since Connors? He seems to be consciously trying to play high percentage tennis. And ... I wonder if that hurts sometimes. I thought at Wimbledon against Gasquet, after the middle of the third set, he didn't look like he had the offense (save his serve) to respond to Richard's barrage. So I wonder whether he's vulnerable to a streaky player with weapons on a good day, as Acasuso may be today.

Yes, Connors has changed Andy's game into solid backcourt play/charge the net more to put pressure on your opponent... from Andy's previous style of stand way behind the baseline, and pound forehands when an opportunity rises.
Against most players, the strategy change works. Even though Andy is about the worst volleyer in the game. With Andy's serve, it's wise to play the style that puts the most pressure on your opponent.
However, if an opponent is playing well. Or, gets to Andy's serve a bit, Andrew is fucked. Because he will never consistently win rallies vs. top players.
The biggest example would be Federer. With this style, Andrew will get creamed every time. The AO match showed this.

Well done to Makiri on routining Srebotink. All Masha was missing were healthy knees and a good coach in Eric Van Harpen who once coached Anna Kournikova. But now the pressure mounts on Kirilenko who has never made the fourth round of a grand slam to win her next match and attain her best ever grand slam result. And congrats to Roddick for winning on his 25th birthday after Acasuso retired from the match.

Nikki V. choked away 5 MPs (IIRC 3 or 4 of these easy FHs netted) on her serve against major league choker Pennetta of all people, getting broken while serving for the match for the second time. Then she smashed her racquet and didn't miss another shot.
I guess it really was the racquet's fault.

I'm watching Haas vs Petzcschhcshner. Nikki's outburst was really funny and I was hoping for more during the tiebreak but she really regained composure there. I'm watching Haas vs Petzcschhcshner. ATP on fast hardcourts is the pitts. Points won on 1st serve - about 98%. BPs saved with unreturnables - most. Rallies that last more than 4 shots - next to none. Rallies that last more than 3 shots but nonetheless degenerate in endless CC BH drill - far too many.

To be fair, Kolya is crushing Krud. It shouldn't be on TV.
Kolya losing only 11 games en route to the 3rd round.
I suspect it will rather easy over Stupid Fathead, too.
And I agree, the much faster courts this year have made this less enjoyable to watch...
It's going to be the same in Melbourne thanks to Lleyton, too... Ugh.

I suppose she's cooled off Razzano but good! Szavay d. Krajicek is a nice win for Agnes. She's improving rapidly. Not only that, I think she has a chance at beating Petrova, who looked shaky today against Rodionova. Nadia may be ripe for an upset. Chak v. Mirza is interesting ... the two main summer hardcourt surprises, maybe.
