Day 12.

I didn't watch the first set, but I couldn't bear now knowing the score so I'd tune in every 2 minutes. I watched the second set until 5-3 and then I went out for a cig, thinking that if she wins, great, if she chokes, well, at least I have enough nicotine in my blood. Well I wasn't going to watch if it went to a 3rd set, that's for sure! I can only take so much of Justine's choking! But she did great in recovering from her chokes.

Justine really did choke... she noticeably wasn't hitting her shots in the important moments. But, like Corswandt said... thanks to Venus for those laughable errors in the final game to close it out. Come on, Justine did hit SOME great shots in SOME important moments. She always gets nervous near the end, so I'm used to it now and I don't get as aggravated as I used to by it, since she comes through afterward so often. But I was glad she could win it on V's serve, because who knows what would have happened next, with one player dizzy and one not able to breathe! Probably an ambulance would have arrived on court next.

Really? Who didn't watch?? Besides Joana, IIRC Hurley said he wouldn't watch. The last time I got really worked up while watching a tennis match was the 2005 Philadelphia final. After that monumental choke, I figured that I didn't have much future as a vicarious glory hunter through tennis, so I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb. For Maria's last 2 Slam finals I was icy cool, but then again she was always a backup favourite. I did watch Nikki's 2006 RG 4R and QF with like-minded people, so there was some "woohoo"-ing, "Dá-lhe miúda!" and raucous laughter at Venus' errors, but I don't know if that really counts.

And yes, JH was playing tentatively and hitting short on those last few games of the 2nd set. That she couldn't buy a 1st serve when it was time to close out the match goes without saying.

You're spending too much time in that Florida sun, cat. It's hot down here Janie. And Janie I noticed you posting zingers aimed at Serena! That suprised me a bit.

This is why I like Justine ... unlike every other player on Tour, she knows the stats ... and admits she knows the stats. "I've been very consistent. Haven't lost before a semifinal for a year and a half now, since Miami 2006. The numbers are great." Also, she mentioned after beating Serena at Wimbledon that it was her first win over her on a non-clay surface, something which most players likely would've known in her shoes, but none would've admitted. I get the feeling that she does play to better her stats, and that being #1 is important to her and she probably does know her Race standing, etc.

I didn't watch. I spent the whole first set looking for a livestream which a) worked, b) worked on a Mac, c) didn't make the entire machine freeze. Didn't find one. Went to the pub instead as could not bear to watch scores. The right decision: WOOHOO BITCHES!!!!!! And when I got back Justine v Serena had downloaded and I got to watch Justine making Serena miserable. WOO!
Poor Chak, though.

So many great points in that match. The point in the early second set I think where Justine went to net and Venus drilled about 4 or 5 shots right at her and she got them all back and then Venus came up with an insane passing shot to win the point. The forehand dtl pass and the cc backhand pass that Justine hit right around Venus. The point where Venus spiked a volley and Justine slid forwards into a perfectly measured lob! The shoelace drop volley, the half volleys. The hilarious point of indecision when Justine was serving for it and half-assed a S/V attempt resulting in having to half volley the ball from no-man's land. The numerous points which should have been over but Justine somehow got the ball back from outside the doubles alley. The vintage overhead from the baseline. Sweet stuff.
