Puchkova v U-Rad So many of these sections are wide open...there are usually a few locks for the MD but the closest here appears to be...Wickmayer?

So many of these sections are wide open...there are usually a few locks for the MD but the closest here appears to be...Wickmayer? Also Suarez Navarro. Draw is a bit unbalanced; some strong sections (Benesova/Rolle; Voracova/Vinci; Dominguez Lino/Schruff) and some weak ones (Keothavong/Czink; Mattek/Baltacha).

O Zuzana swept aside A.Molik and Big Brenda laid waste to Chloe. Namigata was no match for the Yak. Ma. jose whooped LDL. A-Lap and A-Pav both won easily. Has anyone ever pointed out that their transliterated names each have 14 letters? Watch one of them adopt a different transliteration à la Poochkova and mess that up. Rybarikova outtlasted Vinci 8-6 in the third. El Duque def. Schruff 3 & 3 Larsson! Forehand Slice Girl! Flipkens! Sfar! I see Janie's Jozami clipped the Hair. Anne K.

BarbOra Chokes again in the qualies...she had better get her ranking back up to the Top 108, otherwise she'll never play another major. Rybarikova should qualify now. I called that! At my house. To no one.

Seriously. What's the story with Barb-O-ra?

She's got a fun game, lots of slices and dropshots, but it's the type of game that gets you far in juniors but nowhere in the pros. See: Pitu.
I guess Radwanska has bucked the trend. I suppose the difference is that BarbOra is a headcase.

And BarbOra doesn't play great defense, and she's kinda fat for tennis.
Same with the many moonballers in juniors/college that are really good there but will struggle in the pros unless they are among the very best defenders.

Same with the many moonballers in juniors/college that are really good there but will struggle in the pros unless they are among the very best defenders. To wit, Brian Dabul. Thanks guys -- My number one explanation would have been a lack of application to her trade, based solely on her pudginess.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it -- plus married life tends to bring one down!

To no one. Well, it was only ever going to be Rybarikova or Vinci! Shvedova continues to show no signs of ending her slump - three-set loss to Coin. Shocked that Molik lost so easily to Ondraskova.

Convincing win for A-Pav; Ani blows, but she was in good form.
Vinci overplayed in challengers in recent weeks; she may have run out of gas. But she's on the MD list for Surbiton, and I suppose she's already thinking ahead to the fine lawns of Inglund. Much like myself.
Vögele probably is #100-150 material (though maybe not more, at least for now), Dentoni probably isn't.
Molik should retire now, but she'll probably have a go at the grass season.

When I saw Babs last year at the Estoril qualies, she seemed fit. But harmless.

Rybarikova marches on after destroying the Swedette. Another impressive win for the neo-Slovak Gajdosova. El Duque and Ma. jose continue on to the qualifying round, woohoo A-Lap and A-Pav are through, but with surprising struggles against modest opposition. Brenda crashes out to the Pooch. Benesova wins a titanic struggle with Great Arn. Flipkens ousted routinely by Gorgeous Goerges.

I'm amazed that Forehand Slice handled Bachmann so easily and that Sfar slaughtered Snorova. But pleased in both cases!

Vögele probably is #100-150 material (though maybe not more, at least for now) Or maybe not even that. Lyubtsova, who I quite liked in the 1R of the Estoril Q (not so much in the 2R ) is doing well so far. Go Pouty. Lots of possible Slam debuts. The Keothavong/Czink section will see a "WTF?" Q as anticipated.

Possible debutantes - Martinovic, Pandzic, Lapushchenkova, Luzhanska, Lyubtsova, Rybarikova, Jozami, Suarez Navarro, Duque Marino. That's virtually one in every match-up. Rybarikova should definitely make it. Wasn't impressed by CSN's struggles against Ferguson. Would this be Luzhanska's first WTA MD of any sort?

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP) bat Mariana Duque Marino (COL) 6-3 4-6 6-4 Jie Zheng (CHN) bat Kristina Barrois (GER) 6-3 7-6(4) I see the Pooch failed to qualify and picked up a trademark bagel to celebrate her failure.

Stop.

Which Pandzic won - but Niculescu got in as a LL anyway, and was rewarded with...a first round match-up with JJ.
