In three of the last four slams we have had three different Frenchie semifinalists. Men's tennis may have no depth, but French men's tennis does. Monfils doing it at RG makes him ten times better than those other French bums. Ten times! In related news, miss Grosjean being good.

And Gasquet, on the mend after a severe series of psychosomatic injuries, will soon reclaim his rightful place at the summit.

Left in the WUSSt! Elena...this was such a good chance to actually come through and win a major. Presumably she knew that too I can't see how Safina's gone on such a tear on clay, either. I mean, I like her, but...I guess it really is mental. Still think she'll lose to Sweta. A Sweta v Jank final would be ideal at this point, because I'd have literally no idea who'd win. Good for Gael! Now MOVE UP THE COURT. Wow, QFs are...not very interesting, ever.

Oh, I wanted to watch Dementieva collapse But this was a huge chance for her. Had she won this match I believe she would have gone on to win the tournament. Maybe this was her last chance?

Even if Dementieva would have won... There's Kuznetsova to beat. Then the inevitable collapse in the final against either Jankovic or Ivanovic would be expected at some point during the match. Or she would perform like she did against Myskina.
I just can't imagine her winning a slam. Ever.

On the other hand, if in the second week she could meet only other Russian headcases, anything could happen!

She never had a shot at winning the title in the first place because she lost today. If she had won, she might have had a shot. But then we would be talking about a different person than the Elena we have right now, with the damning evidence of today's match. Does this make sense? Probably not, but I like this backwards thinking and judging people's chances in hindsight.

If Elena's going to win a Slam, it'll be at the USO. She seems to be inspired to fight, rather than choke, there. Sadly for her, more of the top players also play well at the USO rather than RG. That RG final is an anomaly for her, anyway...look at her run to the final. Only got past the 3R because Smashnova cramped up. Then Leach on clay, Chokomomo in full-on rabbit-in-headlights mode, then Suarez.

I really like them both in that I'll always root for them against anyone I hate. But otherwise, whatever. JJ BAGurl is a tossup - NO idea who's gonna win that one. Exciting.

Doesn't Baby Anci gurrl have stellar records against Jank and Kuz? Maybe Safina really is our only hope (! considering she's even more of a lumbering brute than Anci)

btw, does anybody see Djokovic doing damage against Nadal, or nada? I haven't been watching... can't figure out if I have coverage. Balls. I've also been seriously distracted by the Stanley Cup Finals and am still mourning the loss of Justine from Tennis Land. So...really, can this be something special, or is Nadal superman? Nole hasn't played great. Nadal, as usual, hard to tell because he's had an easy draw, and opponents have no hope and die against him (see Fathead). Nole is probably the only player who will remain confident against Rafa. And continuously hit high balls hard. He's not going to let Rafa play his championship style of looping to your backhand 242 times in a row. However, Nole has to play at a very high level, like he did for a 1 1/2 sets in Hamburg. And probably serve better. Neither will happen.

Doesn't Baby Anci gurrl have stellar records against Jank and Kuz? Ja, she does. Matchup issues. ~*Baby Anci*~ is a matchup player, of the kind who always beats the "X" type of opponent and always gets destroyed by opponents who play the "Y" kind of game. Dementieva was the single remaining "Y" player in the draw. If ~*Baby Anci*~ fails to win this year's RG, I'll drive all the way up to Fátima to light a candle to Holy Mary Mother of God sometime this year. Evidence of this will be posted on this board. This is a vow I'm as confident of not having to fulfil as the one I made back in 2007 before the AO SF.

And then she'd almost certainly get to play against Ana in the final, who she owns. Not only owns, but has the perfect antidote for her game. Ana can neither outhit nor outrun her. Of course, she might have choked horribly but if there's any player she'd want to play in a Slam final, it's Ivanovic. I don't think she'll have a draw this good again. But as GoDom says, it's a moot point now.

Demented can beat any player, the question is not there. The issue for her is winning 7 matches in a row, without a choke or a horrible match. It doesn't seem like it is possible, regardless of how good her draw is.
