Not going out of my way to watch.
Hoping that the Portuguese team crashes out as early as possible so the Euro doesn't mess up my Wimbledon coverage that much.

Ooh. It's here. What's the draw like?

A Czech Republic Portugal Switzerland Turkey
B Austria Croatia Germany Poland
C France Italy The Netherlands Romania
D Greece Russia Spain Sweden
As you can see, England is not there. They missed the cut losing to Croatia at home in the last game, which sent Russia through.
It's quite amazing how this event puts entire countries into a state of total hysteria. Just watching Croatian television these days makes me realize that perhaps it wasn't such a bad thing that our team failed to qualify.

I knew England hadn't qualified...that's just crazy. France and Italy in the same group? Which of those two teams has turned to suck since '06?

Sucky host nation Switzerland loses to the Czechs. Commentators scandalized that the Czechs won when they were outplayed for the most, because as we all know that never happens in football. The most extreme example of this I can remember also involved the Czech Republic: it was their Euro 2004 SF loss to Greece. I knew Portugal would choke away the final, so I wanted us to lose to a worthy team. But it was the Greeks who pulled through, scoring in virtually the only occasion in which they reached the Czech penalty area, and this after the Czechs had spent 100 mins+ cheerfully squandering one opportunity to score after another. In retrospect, this was the match that first made me realize that modern football has become a total crapshoot. Ask me why. I can't even begin to imagine how even suckier host nation Austria will do tomorrow. Go Türkiye!

Portugal wins comfortably. Worse: all the teams I've seen so far are so crap Portugal may actually end up going deep in this. [lame jokes] Austria match whenever the camera showed the Austrian fans I wondered "How many of these fellows have daughters locked up in their basements?" Germany vs Poland is next. Every time the Germans push into the Polish side of the pitch they must feel like they're invading Poland again, and that will propel them to attack relentlessly. Germany vs Austria could be fun - maybe there'll be an anschluss by midtime and Germany ends the match with 22 players. [/lame jokes]

Germany d. Poland was a good match. Decent level of play, hotly contested throughout, much like their WC match two years ago. Germany has a very young but also experienced team that seems to be in fine physical form.

KLAGENFURT, Austria (AP)—Police detained about 100 hooligans Sunday for shouting Nazi-like slogans during Germany’s European Championship match against Poland.
About 60 people were detained at first, then a second group of 40 was taken into custody later, according to police.
There were no reports of violence against police, but the Austria Press Agency said several German and Polish fans clashed briefly in Klagenfurt’s largest fan zone after Germany took a 1-0 lead. Germany won the game 2-0.
Police encircled the first group in downtown Klagenfurt after they began shouting slogans such as, “All Poles have to wear a yellow star”—an allusion to the yellow star that Jews were forced to display in parts of Europe controlled by Nazi Germany and its allies.
Members of the second group were arrested, according to police, after they began shouting similar slogans, among them: “Germans protect yourselves. Don’t buy anything from Poles”—again an allusion to warnings during the Nazi era, when Germans and Austrians were told to boycott Jewish stores.
The Austria Press Agency said those detained would be charged with disturbing the peace and expelled from Austria.

It's cute how Croatia had more supporters than Austria on their own ground. I expect the same at Switzerland vs Turkey.

Odds of this event having a random winner like 1992 and 2004: still way too high.

Italy Har de har har. The 1st goal being a blatant offside makes it even sweeter. BTW this match exceeded in quality anything I saw at the WC - by far.

I was slightly drunk last night so please excuse my chauvinism. I watched on the Reeperbahn here in Hamburg and the atmosphere was great, especially because a huge part of the crowd there isn't even of German descent. The team played well, else I wouldn't have mind Portugal winning.

The team played well, else I wouldn't have mind Portugal winning. Odd match, wasn't it? The German players seemed spent, having had so much less time to rest than the Portuguese, and made no effort to contest possession for most of the match. Only Ballack, Schweinsteiger who hadn't played before (best player on the pitch by far while he still had fuel, but it ran out after about 70 mins) and I guess Lahm, seemed to have something in the tank. Portugal was its usual self, lackadaisical about 90% of the time and deadly in the remaining 10%. Both teams made the most of nearly all their opportunities to score - it didn't feel like a 5 goal match.

Sexy football! This sport is in fact bearable when the teams actually try to move forwards, create chances etc. But then what do I know. Rossiya!
