Not totally, because tennis players are generally while golfers, as a rule, are much less so. Tennis and soccer will survive because people are perverts. But golf has stolen, or is in the process of stealing, what was once tennis core constituency, hasn't it? At least in the Anglo world. I think it's cyclical. I feel like tennis is coming back...a bit. At least in the States. I mean, you have to get them to the tournaments to see the scrubs. But yes, gays will at the very least keep men's tennis going for purely lascivious reasons.

Anyway, if the women's final had been this one-sided, I can't even begin to imagine what the punditry would be saying about the woeful state of the women's game. Probably wouldn't have been pretty. Though, had Justine Henin not up and retired, but instead absolutely demolished the entire field, they may have said a word or two about that instead. I like how Roger started his speech: "c'est moi!". Hee hee ;D

I'm pretty sure people will find a way to spin this and present it as a case of Nadal playing like God and Federer being really, really good just not as good as JesusRafa and that therefore this match was still miles better than the horrible errorfest that is WTA.

The final sucked. We knew it was going to after 100 Rafa/Rog matches on clay.
But, I don't see how one can argue that the state of the women's game is even close to the men's game, at the moment.

Okay, I'm off to play golf - for the first time ever. Haha. I'll join you lot for the final. ;D Traitor. Golf will wipe out tennis. I don't think I could ever get rid of the tennis nerd in me - and believe me, I've tried with the current state of the women's game!

Me too. And golf is wiping out tennis about as much as possible. At least in USia. I'm pretty sure we've discussed this multiple times here. And I don't think you're right. Tennis is on the upswing with USians our age in a certain economic bracket. Golf, surprisingly, is becoming a mass-cult sport, but while tennis has a much smaller fan base, the average socio-economic sector of its fans in the States will keep it desirable. It's the "30 Rock" of sports! Once you get boys into the tournaments and they see that the majority of the female scrubs are hot sluts, their interest skyrockets. And, also, chicks, as well as gay guys, love to ogle male players.

Once you get boys into the tournaments and they see that the majority of the female scrubs are hot sluts, their interest skyrockets. Too right. And so fit it hurts. But again, one would think that the "fit (and occasionally beautiful) babes playing a compelling sport" concept of women's tennis would be more of a winner among young men than it is. But women's sports still aren't taken seriously enough I guess.

And consider: tennis is the ONLY sport in which ANY female athletes are taken seriously, excepting women who win Olympic figure skating medals, and Ochoa/Sorenstam (but only those two golfers). It's somewhat different in Europe. But, I guess it has more to do with the sports particular countries are good at and their local heroines (for example, women's handball is HUGE in Scandinavia) than with women's sports as whole.

And consider: tennis is the ONLY sport in which ANY female athletes are taken seriously, excepting women who win Olympic figure skating medals, and Ochoa/Sorenstam (but only those two golfers). Maybe some of the top track and field athletes (Isinbayeva, Kluft) as well. Women's volleyball has a tradition of TV coverage, and it does make for surprisingly good TV. Women's football on the other hand doesn't. Women just can't cover the pitch the way the men do, and most of the time the ball just rolls around aimlessly with the players trying their best (and often failing) to catch it.

Women's volleyball and volleyball in general are eminently watchable. I have no idea why they're so unpopular in North America. We only get coverage of the sport's idiot second cousin, beach volleyball and even those "events" seem to just be excuses to market Hawaiian Tropic and Speedo. WTF. The biggest women's pro sport in Canada would probably be curling. We like our bonspiel babes.

It's hard to believe how easily Nadal beat Federer in the 2008 French Open final. Nadal losing only 4 games to Federer in this best of 5 set final is unfathomable to me. Well done to Nadal on the title and on winning 4 French Open titles in a row. Nadal has proven to me that he is at worst the second best clay court tennis player of all time behind Bjorn Borg. But Rafael still needs to win 2 more French Open's to tie Borg's record 6 French Open titles. I think Nadal should take some time off to rest up for Wimbledon. there is no need for him to rush off to play Queens like her has the last couple of years. On a side note I saw the post match interview with Borg and John McEnroe on NBC television and enjoyed it. I was suprised to learn from NBC's Ted Robinson the Borg and McEnroe who were tennis rivals for 5 years never played a tour match against each other on a clay court.

And, also, chicks, as well as gay guys, love to ogle male players. What economic bracket is that? The only group I saw having an upswing, or did... were the blacks gaining interest due to the Sistahz. And that's starting to die down as that story has gone on for a decade now, they're not dominating and always blabbing about other activities. Golf still has Tiger dominating, and will for probably another 10-15 years. As long as he's there, golf is fine. If we're talking now, golf is far out in front. Television wise, live crowds wise (which isn't a fair comparison).

It depends what you mean by taken seriously. If you mean the usual sports dolt that only knows what ESPN tells them, then tennis doesn't exist outside of the Sistahz and Maria being "hot" and screaming really loud.

Cuevas/Horna won the doubles. "the first all-South American duo to become Grand Slam champions in the 40-year Open era." "Most of the teams winning in this tournament are guys serving and staying back - all the top teams, the seeded teams, don't do that and they lost. You have to give credit to these [baseline] guys, too. Doubles is different nowadays - a lot of singles players are playing more doubles and revolutionizing the way doubles is being played." -- D. Nestor
