Fatty parents updates, please. At 2-1 Coin in the second set TB, the chair umpire overruled a call in favor of Coin. Dellacqua bitched about it briefly, but, to her credit, got over it fairly quickly. Coin went on to win the TB to win her first WTA Tour main draw match, and THEN BEAT ANA IVANOVIC, so you know how big this match (scoreline 7-6 7-6!) was. After the match, this middle-aged-to-elderly Australian couple was mumbling about how "one point can change everything" and they had badges and I'm assuming they were Casey's parents. So the guy stands up and cups his hands around his mouth and yells, "Terrible call, umpire!" and the umpire doesn't hear him. He does it again, and the umpire doesn't hear him. He does it a third time, and the umpire still isn't paying attention. And because I repress my emotions until they come out at very inopportune times, I, not the umpire, responded. To wit: "Jesus Christ, shut UP. It's not the goddamn umpire that got her to 7-6 6-6 (3-1)*, is it? Fuckers." And then I walked away. *It was actually 7-6 6-6 (2-1) at the time of the call, and as I was walking away, that's what I was most pissed about -- getting the scoreline wrong in my dressing-down which undermined my argument.

The Australians are always awful, but this time, they were worse than ever. Don't get me started on Rennae Stubbs or her doppleganger at Zahlavova Strycova/Zakopalova vs. Poutchek/Rodionova. Okay, get me started. For later.

I'm impressed with that Mackerova chic and the Byschkova. ZOMG I was there! I WAS THERE!! Next year I'll make a "Dawn Maree" sign. Am I the only one who remembers her being "Dawn Mar ee" on the old Sanex boards? I remember Dawn Maree. Also, you probably saw her! In actual real life! OMG. Rennae Stubbs managed to be even more obnoxious than she usually is?

Also, your story is reminiscent of those times when I'm caught in a crowd of people coming out of a Tube station or something, and listening to headphones, and I get a bit confused as to what I am thinking in my head and what I am shouting out loud, and it's sometimes along the lines of "GOD just FUCKING MOVE".

That's my every day on the Metro. The best is when people are wandering around sideways or backwards and gazing upwards because they are just so gobsmacked by SUCH A HUGE CITY, and they almost walk into me, and they're like "oh sorry y'all" and I always respond "WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING, PLEASE." Of course, that won't compare to the numerous times I've seen people shoved on and off the trains, which is always a very fun time.

Hurley and Dawn Marie attended the same match? That's just the funniest thing I've read today. Hehe.

What this means, is that at some point during the day, Hurley and Dawn Marie had similar thoughts. One day, Hurley and Dawn are thinking of attending the same match at the same time... next thing you know, Hurley is writing incoherent babble and just generally being awesome over on WTAworld. Hopefully.

That day has already occurred, multiple times, during the years 2002 to 2005.

Let's just get this out of the way: as you know, though I did play tennis (in high school, and very badly), I don't pay attention to shots or grips or handedness or anything important. I can give basic styles of play, and I'm sure you've all realized my raison d'etre is to make pithy-cum-bitchy comments about behavior and incidents and hotties and such. Let's not pretend that I go to the US Open to watch tennis. That is an incidental consequence of attending the event to (i) get sunshine, (ii) escape my scary life via holiday, and (iii) drool over and possibly proposition dudes. Not necessarily in that order. Having said that... I was there Tuesday and Wednesday. I saw basically everyone not on the three main courts. This obviously includes the barnburner between Zahlavova Strycova/Zakopalova and Poutchek/Rodionova. I will be happy to answer questions, if anyone has any. If not, life goes on and I have to pack. I will say two things unprovoked: 1) I went today too. This was the first day in 15 years of going (shit...15 years) I was not able to buy a ticket at the gate. All day session tickets were sold out by my arrival at 10:15, including grounds passes. Whoever says tennis is dead is a fucking retarded orangutan, or possibly some sort of mollusk. I wish I was dead like tennis. 2) A nice conversation while watching Bammer-Rezai: [Stands of Court 13, smaller side, facing sun. HURLEY sits with 20 or so RANDOM FANS on bleachers. On bleachers directly to left, 4 feet away, BAMMER'S COACH sits, exhorting his player, SYBILLE BAMMER, in their common native language (spoiler!).] RANDOM WOMAN [to no one in particular]: So, where is she from? RANDOM WOMAN #2: I think they said Austria. RANDOM FAT GUY [seated directly in front of Hurley]: Australia. HURLEY [probably the first words he's said to anyone all day]: Uh...Austria. RANDOM FAT GUY [turns around, to Hurley with anger]: Australia. HURLEY [gleefully accepting confirmation of his misanthropy]: ...What? [points at drawsheet, ignores fat moron] RANDOM WOMAN #2: Actually...yeah, it says Austria. She's from Austria. I mean, that's what the umpire said. RANDOM FAT GUY: Oh. OHHHHHH. Well...wow! I always thought she was from Australia. [loudly, to Hurley] I STAND CORRECTED. [turns to RANDOM WOMAN] I mean, I always wondered why her coach started speaking, I guess [ here's the kicker] Austrian to her. Now it makes sense. [Hurley's head explodes. End scene.] I just read this. That Australia and Austria repartee you were involved in with the lunkheads was so funny. ;D

Oh. Well, I think it was her. I'm not positive. But...okay, as we all know BarbOra is fucking nuts. Tossing her racket, monologues, screaming at the umpire (though she was very supportive to her crappy doubles partner, Klara). And this Stubbswoman, sitting in front of me, kept saying to her friend (possibly lesbian lover?) about how "that was unacceptable" and "that was uncalled for." Meanwhile, she was vehemently supporting ANASTASIA RODIONOVA. I mean...come on. Reverse that scoreline and A-Rod would have Al Qaedaed the court, right? Also, she was a robot, and she had three phrases. "Right here." "Let's do this now." Something else. I guess that's really it.

"So, Stubbsy, what do you think of Ms. Rodio's world-famous on-court nastiness?" Fight, fight! Maybe her gf would've slugged you, though.

Never have I gone from adoration to unmitigated hate more quickly for a player than I have for Alla Kudryavtseva (Dechy's horrible behavior about a decade ago comes close, though).
I went over to the Chan/Kudryavtseva match as it approached the end of the second set, which Chan was on the verge of pulling out. Luckily, again, I was near a coach -- Kudryavtseva's. Alla was crying when I got there, and, um, didn't stop until about 4-2 in the third. Every time -- EVERY TIME -- she lost a point, she screamed whinily. She pounded the tarped fence with her racket after 90% of the points she lost, and literally broke into tears three times.
On occasion, she would whine -- the sound! UGH -- to her coach in a British/Russian accent, "I CAHN'T DOOOO ANYMORE!!!!1" Her coach's response varied from "Davai" (early) to "Shut up and play" (later) to "Stop feeling sorry for yourself" (near the end). I appreciated that.
Once it became evident she was going to lose, she shut the fuck up, but She. Is. The. Most. Annoying. Player. Ever!! I was considering telling her coach that she lost a big fan due to her behavior, but about a hundred people were openly laughing at her for an hour, so I'm pretty sure he figured it out.
Yep. She's awful.

What was Dechy's horrible behavior? I'll look up the year now...wow, only 2002. Feels like ages ago. Very tense match vs. Tulyaganova at USO. Changeover is occurring and Iroda had just won a tight game. A ballboy picks up the last ball and Dechy wants it back. She says "Can I have the ball?" The ballboy does not hear her, as everyone is still applauding. She says again, "Can I have the ball?" but he still cannot hear her. She runs up to him, bends down and screams (literally) into his face: "GIVE ME THE BAAAAAAAAAAAALL." I think he pooed himself but he gave her the damn ball. Of course by then she was practically at her chair so it didn't do her any good. Actually, six years removed, it's kind of funny. 2002 US OPEN HARD (O) R64 N. DECHY 6-1 3-6 7-6(1)

Actually, six years removed, it's kind of funny. That's what I was about to write. Also, for French people, screaming at people when you're not happy is the norm.

Geez. Can't you just spit on the street and then run down some toddlers, like the Koreans?

I kid. Koreans are actually really passive aggressive. Assertive foreigners are confusing and quite rude, many of them think. Given than many assertive foreigners are quite rude, this is not inaccurate.
Needless to say, I fit right in here and only had to alter my negotiation style slightly.

I would never have expected that of Dreary Dechy!
Having already witnessed her antics at Wimbledon '07, I would definitely have expected that of Kudryavtseva.
