Post by Calico on Sept 4, 2008 22:30:21 GMT -5
It's so dissapointing Roddick blew the fourth set while serving for it and to force a fifth set. Roddick has the biggest serve in tennis history but it's really not much good in the clutch anymore. Congrats to Novak I guess. He's the better player and he perservered in the end. And I thought Novak enjoyed humour. If he does he should have enjoyed Andy's joking around about his injuries and illnesses.

It is in moments like this we can appreciate how classy Federer is. I don't care how the crowd behave during the match, or what Roddick said. Being an asshole to a crowd like that is a big NO NO for a tennis player.

I think Novak was trying to be funny with Andy's comment.
Then he dissed the crowd after they booed him, which I applaud.
If I was a player, I'd be a hell of a lot worse to the drunken idiots in that crowd.

If I was a player, I'd be a hell of a lot worse to the drunken idiots in that crowd. Novak wasn't trying to be funny. he was serious and that's why the crowd turned on him. And Roddick was only kidding around when he said Novak had the Bird Flu and SARS etc. But obviously Novak is a little think skinned at others thinking he's faking some of his injuries.

Well, after he won, there really wasn't much applause for him. And then, in the on-court interview, he basically said everyone in the crowd thought he was faking, and he didn't appreciate Andy saying he had 16 injuries, and he was glad he showed everyone who thought that by knocking Andy out. After every sentence, they booed him LOL I hope somebody threw that shit on youtube. Who does that?!

Given how uncontroversial Federer and Nadal are, it's perhaps not such a bad thing that Djokovic has a huge fucking chip on his shoulder.

If I was a player, I'd be a hell of a lot worse to the drunken idiots in that crowd. I also applaud him, but I don't think he was trying to be funny. He took the conversation there very deliberately, and kept it there - he definitely had a point to prove. Took a lot of chutzpah, he knew he was going to rile up the crowd and he kept on going. How I wish someone would have done something similar regarding the J-Block. I think Roddick's comments were funny, not at all out of line, but you can also imagine how their target could be offended, especially if they get picked up and repeated by commentators and the press. Anyway! NOLE I now love 7 out of 8 semi-finalists, which...is pretty good going for a Slam

Thanks for the link -- wow. I feel bad for Barkann but I thought he handled it pretty well -- it's not exactly something he'd be prepared for. Silly Novak. I didn't see the 4th set but am not too surprised the way it ended. Novak-Fed will be a lot more entertaining than Awkward Andy- Fed would've been.

"Maybe I exaggerated and reacted bad in that moment. I apologize."On one hand, I think it's big of him to admit that he might have been wrong. On the other, I think he's a big wimp for not sticking to his guns. One thing I kind of always liked about Hewitt, was his ability to act like a complete ass and refuse to feel any shame for it; it was almost like he wasn't a real human being... just a robot programmed to be a complete asshole whenever possible. Beautiful. Djokovic doesn't actually remind me of Hewitt, generally, but Hewitt had the biggest chip on his shoulder in the history of tennis, so this has reminded me of him ;D

I was kidding. Sort of, I like it when the crowd gets involved. Each Grand Slam has difficulties, players have to deal with it. Wimbledon rain, the Australian heat, French people, night crowds at the US Open. That's the way it is and it's fine with me. Maybe it's because it is a crappy Youtube video, but the booing doesn't seem that bad. Michael handled it well. He tried to push Djokovic to say something positive about the crowd, but Novak kept going on. Oh well. Djokovic is so lucky it isn't the French crowd. I think we'll see some reactions Saturday, but people will quickly forget.

LOL. I should have stayed up for another 15 minutes.
I'm not surprised it happened. The most noticeable thing about Djokovic is that he really, really wants to be appreciated and loved - which is completely OK and only human. The problem is that the Serbian media and general public opinion have created such a hysterical atmosphere around him that's it's become totally unacceptable to even question some of his actions, let alone criticize him. It compares to blasphemy, and I'm not exaggerating. Even the otherwise sane and rational people turn into Denise when someone dares say anything negative about our Nole. And when you combine it with a family that's basically Yury Sharapov x 15000, it's not surprising it's got to his head.
I only wish this had happened in Paris. Against Gasquet.

Found @ MTF:
It does seem there is a vendetta on this site to get Djokovic not necessarily because he is Serbian but because he became politically involved in the Kosovo independence issue last year. Novak went down and visited the Serbian ghetto of Mitrovica in Kosovo, played a little tennis with those poor kids and expressed his support for keeping Kosovo as part of Serbia. Many of you know that the majority population of Kosovo is NOW (but not previously) Muslim Albanian, whereas Serbs are Christian). I was really amazed when Novak did that - it took alot of courage. My first thought was - `Uhoh there goes your career Novak the Ubers will be out to get you now.'
NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days to get them to give up control of Kosovo. Kosovo is the heartland, the place where Serbia was founded 1,000 years ago, but the Albanians moved in and NATO decided to give it to them based on the right of `self-determination'. So this hornet's nest is what 20 year old Novak Djokovic walked into by supporting what's left of the Serb minority in Kosovo. And yes his father is from Kosovo.

I only wish this had happened in Paris. Against Gasquet. If that had been the case, it would never have got to this stage. The crowd would have begun booing Wuss two sets earlier for being a wuss. And then Wuss would have retired due to hurt feelings. I don't think having the crowd against him will hurt Nole. He knew exactly what he was getting himself into when he did that. I'm sure he'll anticipate the fallout.

He did the right thing to apologize but I also think he did the right thing by calling out smart-ass Roddick before that (actually the second one to do so this fortnight after Gnome). His only mistake was goading the fans directly, but as you say I think he can deal with that. That said, go Roj go.

I still think Nole was trying to be tongue-in-cheek at the start, since he often does that self-depricating humor. Then, when the fans kept booing him he went along with it.
Either way, this is overblown.
Berdych was 100x the prick in Madrid, and that crowd forgot about the next match. They probably won't even be against him that much vs. Roger.
Also, I'm all for players actually speaking their mind.
