I wanted #1 Dementieva. Oh, well.
I must say this match vastly exceeded my expectations, though. I was expecting worse than the 1st semi from last year.

Okay, no more Slam final-less #1s. Better than nothing.

That whole slam-final-less number 1 deal was embarrassing. I'm sure that we're all glad that's over... Jelena included. I'll root for Safina in the next semifinal, and don't then won't care who wins the final.

Dementieva's total collapse in the last two games was embarrassing...didn't see it coming at all. I thought Jankovic played a smart match, more aggressive than usual (and the aggression came at the right times, as did the reverting back to defense). Impressed with how she wrapped it up in such business-like fashion.

At least this time Serena had to work hard to get back the fitness level required to win Slams. Though with the current poor level of WTA play, probably she can go back to her usual life of socializing year-round except for that week-to-10-day period prior to each Slam which she traditionally set aside for some desultory practicing with Venus between social engagements.

Yay Jelena. I almost got a bit teary-eyed. Almost. The bitterness on WTAW is certainly amusing, but Demented playing dumb tennis (which she does most of the time) is always likely to lose against Jankovic. I got petrified at 6-4 5-4 40-15 when Jelena started protesting something (was it Demented serving while she was unprepared, or what?) and got all kinds of flashbacks from the 2006 semi, but Elena was kind enough to gift the next point. Very much appreciated. I didn't see the other match, did the finally catch up with Dinara or was Ree JUST TOO GOOD!!!11~?

Dinara played stupid. She was very aggressive for whatever reason, when her usual hard, but safe shots down the middle is the best strategy against Ree. Plus, not the best idea when there's 30 mph gusts.

Post by lexpretend on Sept 6, 2008 7:56:39 GMT -5
So...can anyone make a case for Jankovic, then?
- Serena says the pressure is all on Jelena, going for her first Slam. Actually, this isn't true. Jelena's posted her best ever Slam result and, even if she loses, can walk away expecting that she can do better in the future. Serena, on the other hand, is desperate to grab a Slam this year, and it's her last chance. A final would be acceptable for Jelena, not for Serena. - Jelena is a horrible choker. But so is Serena! She's much worse at holding leads and closing out matches now than she was in '02, you could cite any number of matches from this year alone. Including her last Slam final. And especially against fast, tenacious counterpunchers like Jelena. - The wind might help a consistent, more instinctively safe player like Jelena. Serena said after the Dinara match that she deliberately played safer because of the conditions, but that's not the game with which she can really blow Jelena away. But if Serena does turn up the aggression, she risks Dinara-ing herself out of the match.
Oh, who am I kidding, it'll be 3 and 4 to Silliams.
