Roger Federer (SUI/N.1) Andy Murray (ECO/N.3) Andy Roddick (E-U/N.5) Gilles Simon (FRA/N.8)
Novak Djokovic (SER/N.2) Nikolay Davydenko (RUS/N.4) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA/N.6) Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG/N.7)
Conventional wisdom is that the Federer group is tougher. It probably is, but not by a whole lot.

Agreed. I would say that the gap between Murray and Davydenko is what makes Federer's group tougher. Um, that and Federer being Federer and Djokovic being lame at the moment. But Djokovic's group is stronger at the bottom.

Things could get weird...Djokovic is definitely out of form, and Davydenko hasn't been convincing lately, but they're the experienced elite players in their group. Tsonga and Del Pony barely have 10 weeks in the top 10 between them (NB: I don't know the actual number), both are inexperienced debutants, but they're in red-hot form.

Yes, it wouldn't be too shocking to see the bottom two advance from the Djokovic group.

I think the Djokovic group is tougher. We know who is going to qualify from the Federer group.

"I feel confident just now but I'm not expecting to play my best tennis this week. Obviously it's been a long few weeks since Madrid, it's right at the end of the year, I've played a lot of matches. I'm a little bit tired." -- A.Murray
"I am very tired." -- N.Djokovic

Stepanek and Kiefer are the alternates. wat How on earth does this work?! They're ranked 27 and 38. Did no one else want to go? Seriously? Tennis players

Why should they go? I wouldn't want to go to China for no reason.

I would. But I don't travel the globe 50 weeks of the year. I suppose that going to China for no reason becomes less special when you've already been on 3 continents in the past two months.

True. And look at the players going. Radek is crazy, and Krud probably has no friends.

Money. Points. At least two of the field are reportedly injured. The top WTA alternates managed to show up. I'm not actually sure how the ATP YEC points work...but in Doha, A-Rad got like 115 points for one match. You'd think those players on the bubble of seeding tiers might have the AO in mind.
Also, some semblance of giving a shit about the ATP's end of year showcase would be nice.

This is good stuff. Davy was 5-2 with match-point which Jo saved with a drop-shot. Now 5-5.
